Crucial to focus on cancers unique to low, middle-income nations: US expert

Low and middle-income countries are grappling with dual burden of non-communicable diseases and infection ailments, and it is crucial to "direct more attention" towards cancers prevalent or unique to such countries, a US-based cancer expert has said. Citing data, Dr Shobha Krishnan also said that as cancer cases in India are projected to rise by nearly 13 per cent by 2025 compared to 2020, the "urgency to exchange knowledge and best practices is critical". Krishnan, founder and president of US-based Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer (GIAHC), was in India recently to take part in the first-ever US-India cancer dialogue held in Delhi earlier this month. In June 2023, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reaffirmed the strong health partnership between the US and India by announcing new commitments to accelerate the fight against cancer, including convening a US-India cancer dialogue to advance the prevention, early detection, and treatment of ...

King Charles III to visit Australia, Samoa as he recovers from cancer

King Charles III is preparing to visit Australia and Samoa in October, an itinerary that will span 12 time zones and test the monarch's stamina as he recovers from cancer treatment. The trip, announced on Sunday by Buckingham Palace, marks a watershed moment for the 75-year-old king, who has been slowly returning to public duties after taking a break following his cancer diagnosis in early February. The decision to undertake such a long journey will be seen as a sign of Charles' recovery, even though the program in Australia will be limited. The visit to Australia will be a critical moment for the king as he tries to shore up support for the monarchy at home and abroad. The trip will mark the first time since he ascended the throne that Charles will visit one of the 14 countries outside the United Kingdom where the British monarch remains head of state, a link that is a source of pride for some but an unwelcome reminder of Britain's colonial dominance for others. While he will ...

Kate Middleton makes first public appearance since cancer diagnosis

Britain put on a display of birthday pageantry Saturday for King Charles III, a military parade that marked the Princess of Wales' first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis early this year. The annual event was also a show of stability by the monarchy after months in which both the king and Kate, wife of heir to the throne Prince William, have been sidelined by cancer treatment. Kate joined other members of the royal family on a Buckingham Palace balcony at the end of the King's Birthday Parade. The family and crowds outside the palace watched a flyby of military aircraft to cap ceremonies marking the monarch's official birthday Kate announced Friday that she would attend the royal birthday celebrations after making progress in her treatment. She disclosed in March that she was undergoing chemotherapy for an unspecified form of cancer. It was her first public appearance since December. I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are

Kate Middleton 'doing well' after cancer diagnosis, says Prince William

Prince William, the heir apparent to the British throne, on Friday said his wife Catherine is doing well, one of the royal's few comments about her condition since her cancer diagnosis. The Prince of Wales made the remarks about Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, during a visit to St Mary's Community Hospital on the Isles of Scilly. He was told about a new health and social care facility being built on Duchy land near the hospital. The prince said his children, George, Charlotte and Louis, were "very jealous" of his trip, and he may bring them to Cornwall later in the year. He was given a letter by matron Lynda McHale, written by her granddaughter, that wished the Princess of Wales and King Charles well in their respective cancer recoveries. The trip marks William's first official visit to the Isles of Scilly since becoming Duke of Cornwall, a title he holds in addition to his Prince of Wales title. The 42-year-old Princess of Wales appealed for her family to have time, space and

A study by the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), a premier cancer treatment and research institute here, has estimated that the productivity loss of the country due to oral cancer in year 2022 was approximately USD 5.6 billion. India contributes two-thirds of the global mortality due to oral cancer and has a younger population at risk, said the study, which analysed how the disease affected 100 patients treated between 2019 and 2020 with a follow-up of 36 months. The median age of these patients was 47 years at the time diagnosis, and the majority of them were male. The disease-specific survival for early and advanced stages of the disease was 85 per cent and 70 per cent, with a median age of 47 years. "With (a total of) 671 years (referring to these 100 cases) lost prematurely, the loss of productivity was USD 41, 900 for early stage and USD 96, 044 for the advanced stage. Prince William returns to duties for 1st time since Kate's cancer diagnosis

Prince William returns to public duties on Thursday for the first time since his wife's cancer diagnosis, bolstering the royal family's ranks as health problems continue to sideline the princess and King Charles III. William is set to visit a surplus food redistribution centre and a youth club it serves, highlighting efforts to reduce food waste as a way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and feed people in need. The prince stepped away from public duties after Kate, the Princess of Wales, announced on March 22 that she was undergoing treatment for an unspecified type of cancer. In a video message released that day, Kate asked for time, space and privacy as she and her family adjusted to her diagnosis. I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family, she said at the time. It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok
