Chennai-Jaffna flights to operate daily from Jul 16: Union Minister Scindia

The frequency of flights between Chennai and Sri Lanka's Jaffna will be increased from four times a week to daily services from July 16, a move that will also amplify trade and commerce, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia said. Scindia made the announcement in a pre-recorded video message on the second day of the 67th annual convention of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) being hosted in Colombo. Over 500 tourism, aviation and travel experts, and tour operators have gathered in Colombo for the Indian Travel Congress. He said the convention, taking place in the island nation, highlighted the old cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka. "I believe that our partnership with Sri Lanka gives us a rare opportunity to undertake several reforms to address short-term challenges of the sector" and become an important power of influence in the global aviation ecosystem, Scindia said. United Airlines gets a handle on cancelled flights: CEO Scott Kirby

Air travellers could breathe a little easier on Monday, as a break in stormy weather and lighter schedules a day before the July 4 holiday helped airlines keep more flights moving on time. By late morning on the East Coast, fewer than 100 US flights had been cancelled, although 1,000 were late, according to FlightAware. United Airlines, the worst-performing US carrier for more than a week, laid out steps to improve, including reducing flights at its hub airport in Newark, New Jersey. CEO Scott Kirby said over the weekend that United is working with regional authorities to get more gates at the airport, but the airline will need to reduce its schedule in Newark to have more of a buffer, especially during thunderstorm season. Kirby continued to place much of the blame on the Federal Aviation Administration, which reduced the number of flights in and out of Newark a week ago. That caused United to cancel flights and left planes and crews stranded out of position. Nearly 2.7 millio

Air India on Monday said its aircraft, which faced a technical issue, is undergoing necessary checks and repairs at Vancouver in Canada. We regret the inconvenience caused to our guests, but as always, ensuring the safety of all is our top priority," the spokesperson said. Many of the passengers were accommodated on another carrier's flight, some were provided hotel accommodation in the national capital, and a full refund was also offered to people who preferred that option, an Air India spokesperson said in a statement. An official in the know said the flight AI 314 was originally scheduled to operate to Hong Kong late on Sunday night, but due to some engineering issues in the Boeing 787 aircraft, the flight was rescheduled for Monday morning. Finally, the flight took off at around 7.40 am but returned in less than an hour to the national capital. There were more than 200 people on board, the official added. 11 injured evacuating Cathay Pacific jet after aborted takeoff in Hong Kong

A Cathay Pacific jetliner aborted its takeoff at Hong Kong International Airport early Saturday, and 11 passengers were injured while evacuating the aircraft, the airline said. Flight CX880, bound for Los Angeles, returned to the gate after a technical issue caused the crew to abort the takeoff and a precautionary passenger evacuation was initiated, the airline said in a statement. It said those on board used five escape slides to exit the plane. Cathay Pacific gave no details on the problem. Public broadcaster RTHK reported one of the plane's tires had overheated, causing it to burst, citing police. The flight was carrying 293 passengers and 17 crew members. We understand that 11 passengers are being treated at the hospital with injuries sustained during the evacuation process, Cathay Pacific said. Our priority is to look after all affected passengers and crew. By 10:30 a.m., nine of the injured passengers had been discharged from the hospital, the airline said later. Using a ..

Vistara to add 10 planes, 1,000 people this FY; shelves plan to fly to US

Full service carrier Vistara expects to add a total of 10 planes as well as hire more than 1,000 people in the current financial year and has shelved plans to fly to the US, according to a top executive. Currently, Vistara, which is set to be merged with Air India, has a fleet of 61 aircraft and a staff strength of over 5,200. During an interaction here this week, Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan said there has been a ready pool of talent, especially pilots and cabin crew members, with the collapse of Go First. "Just like Air India and IndiGo, we also recruited them. We wanted to make sure that we took the right number, right people. We went through the usual process that every airline will do. Then, there is the entire job market for the cabin crew where freshers are coming in. We still attract good talent," he told PTI. Around 50 pilots from Go First have been recruited by the airline. Elaborating on Vistara's hiring plans, Kannan said the airline would add a total of 10 aircraft and wo

Boeing halts shipments of the 787 Dreamliner for a flaw in the tail section

Boeing said Tuesday that deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner have been halted again by another manufacturing issue, the latest in a string of setbacks affecting the two-aisle jet. The company said it is inspecting fittings on part of the tail called the horizontal stabilizer for a nonconforming condition. The inspections and repairs will affect near-term deliveries but won't alter the company's forecast of deliveries for the full year. Boeing did not say how many planes are affected by the new defect. Boeing said the flaw in the tail is not a safety issue and planes already in airline fleets can keep flying. The company said it notified the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines. The 787 and the 737 Max have both been plagued by production defects that have sporadically held up deliveries and left airlines without planes that they expected to have for the peak summer season. In April, Boeing found a problem with fittings on Max jets were the fuselage meets the vertical section o

Pak's aviation body chief slams airport security for 'harassing passengers'

Pakistan's aviation body chief has accused the customs and security officials of harassing passengers at the country's airports to extort money. Khaqan Murtaza, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), made the allegations while briefing the Senate Standing Committee's meeting on Aviation at the Parliament House on Monday, Dawn newspaper reported on Tuesday. Murtaza alleged that the Customs, Airport Security Force (ASF) and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officials "continue to collect money by harassing passengers," the paper said. The meeting chaired by Senator Hidayatullah highlighted the lack of coordination among agencies at airports and pointed out impolite attitudes with passengers, some participants had experienced. "You will not find any uniformed armed personnel at any airport in the world," Murtaza said. "It looks like an aggressive atmosphere that is unheard of elsewhere. It feels as if we live in a cantonment." Committee Chairman Hidayatullah also raised .
