London hospitals cancel operations, appointments after ransomware attack

Several London hospitals said Tuesday that they had to cancel operations and send patients away because of a cyberattack on a company that supplies pathology laboratory services. The firm, Synnovis, said it had been hit with a ransomware attack. Chief Executive Mark Dollar said the attack has affected all Synnovis IT systems, resulting in interruptions to many of our pathology services. It is still early and we are trying to understand exactly what has happened, he said. The National Health Service said there had been a significant impact at King's College and Guy's and St Thomas' hospital trusts, which between them run several south London hospitals, as well as to clinics and doctors' practices across a swath of the city. A memo to staff said the critical incident had had a major impact on the delivery of services, with blood transfusions particularly affected. French government says it's being targeted by unusual intense cyberattacks

The French government said Monday that several of its services have been targeted by cyberattacks of unprecedented intensity, and a special crisis centre was activated to restore online services. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's office said in a statement that the attacks started Sunday night and hit multiple government ministries, without providing details. By Monday afternoon, it said, the impact of the attacks has been reduced for most services and access to government sites restored. A group of hackers called Anonymous Sudan, which is considered by cybersecurity experts as pro-Russia, claimed responsibility for the attacks in online posts. The French prime minister's office and digital safety agency wouldn't comment on the claim, or provide details of what was targeted or what damage might have been caused. Education sector most targetted for cyber attacks in Apr-Jun: Study

The education sector has emerged as the most targeted industry for cyber attacks, accounting for more than 7 lakh detected threats in April-June 2023, according to a study. The substantial number of attacks underscores the increasing vulnerability of educational institutions to cyberattacks, the study said. The manufacturing industry stood second, reporting 3.29 lakh threats, and was followed closely by professional services with 3.28 lakh threats, the study by malware analysis la, SEQRITE Labs stated. These numbers indicate that cybercriminals are diversifying their focus, targeting a wide range of sectors with malicious intent, it highlighted. In the education sector, the most prevalent threat was identified as W32.Neshta.C8. This malicious software has proven to be a formidable adversary, posing a significant challenge to educational institutions. The manufacturing sector grappled with PIF.StucksNet. Professional services faced a similar threat landscape with Trojan.KillAv.DR.

Cyber attacks surge over 2-fold in India in first half of 2023: Report

India saw a huge surge in ransomware and IoT cyber attacks in the first half of 2023, as criminals shifted to stealthier means of malicious activities, according to a report by SonicWall. While major economies like the US and the UK witnessed a decline in ransomware attacks, India (up 133 per cent) and Germany (52 per cent) are among the countries that saw a huge surge in such attacks, the 2023 SonicWall Mid-Year Cyber Threat Report for the January-June period stated. At the global level, a variety of other attacks have trended up, including cryptojacking (399 per cent), IoT malware (37 per cent) and encrypted threats (22 per cent), the report said.
