Storm Lee made landfall late Saturday afternoon in Nova Scotia, Canada, at near-hurricane strength, but not before it brought high winds, rough surf and torrential rains to a large swath of New England and Maritime Canada, toppling trees, swamping coastlines, cutting power to tens of thousands and claiming one life. With sustained winds of 110 kph, the centre of the post-tropical cyclone came ashore about 215 kilometers west of Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, according to the US National Hurricane Centre. 2,000 bodies retrieved in eastern Libya wrecked by devastating floods

Emergency workers uncovered more than 1,500 bodies in the wreckage of Libya's eastern city of Derna on Tuesday, and it was feared the toll could spiral with 10,000 people reported still missing after floodwaters smashed through dams and washed away entire neighbourhoods of the city. The death toll in Derna alone has exceeded 5,300, the state-run news agency quoted Mohammed Abu-Lamousha, a spokesman for the east Libya interior ministry, as saying on Tuesday. 12 killed in Vietnam's Hanoi after fire burns 9-storey apartment building

A fire in a nine-story apartment building in Vietnam's capital killed about 12 people and injured more than 50, state media reported Wednesday. The fire has been extinguished and rescue operations were continuing, the official Vietnam News Agency reported. Authorities have not confirmed an exact death toll. The fire was believed to have started late Tuesday and rescuers struggled to reach the building on a narrow lane in south Hanoi. It wasn't immediately clear how much of the building had burned. It was home to 150 residents, and 54 of the 70 people rescued from the fire were hospitalized for their injuries, state media said. Authorities were investigating the cause of the fire. A deadly fire at a karaoke parlor in southern Vietnam's Binh Duong province killed 32 people last year.

PM Modi announces package as 11 killed, 15 injured in Rajasthan accident

Eleven people from Gujarat were killed and at least 15 injured when a trailer rammed into their bus from behind in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district early on Wednesday, police said. The bus was on its way from Gujarat to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh when the accident occurred around 4.30 am, they said. The bus had halted at Antra flyover in the Lakhanpur area when the trailer rammed into it from behind. Five men and six women died on the spot, the police said. According to the police control room, Antu, Nandram, Lallu, Bharat, Lalji, his wife Madhuben, Ambaben, Kambuben, Ramuben, Anjuben and Madhuben -- the wife of one Arvind -- died in the accident. They were from Dihor in Gujarat's Bhav Nagar.

4 dead as landslide hits truck on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway: Police

Four people were killed when their truck plunged into a deep gorge after being hit by a landslide along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway early Tuesday, police said. Due to the landslide that hit the highway near Sherbibi in Ramban district at around 5 am, vehicular movement was suspended, they said. A police official said the truck was headed to Srinagar from Jammu. A rescue operation was immediately launched by local volunteers and police, officials said, adding all four bodies were retrieved from the mangled remains of the truck. Officials identified the deceased as truck driver Mohd Afzal Garoo (42), his brother Altaf Garoo (36) of Kulgam, Irfan Ahmed (33) and his brother Showkat Ahmad (29) of Anantnag. Around six cattle, which were being transported in the truck for domestic use, also perished in the accident, they said. Toll in Manipur's Pallel violence rises to 3 after one more death reported

The toll in the violence that broke out at Pallel in Manipur's Tengnoupal district rose to three with a 37-year-old man succumbing to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital, officials said on Saturday.
