Several G20 countries to participate in flower festival at Delhi's CP

Several G20 countries, including China and Japan, will participate in a flower festival at Central Park, Connaught Place here on the weekend, officials said on Thursday. The objective is to showcase the vibrancy and colourful display of G20 members and guest countries, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) said in a statement. The NDMC G-20 Flower Festival is being organised at Central Park, Connaught Place on March 11 and 12. Flower plants of different colours and varieties will be displayed in different forms and installations, it said. The NDMC will be displaying different flower plants showcasing the diversity of the Indian Subcontinent. The four G20 countries that are participating in the festival are China, Japan, Singapore and the Netherlands. The corporation will provide the required space to all the participating G20 member countries and guest countries for the flower festival, the statement said. Excise case: ED questions Sisodia for 5 hrs; another businessman arrested

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Tuesday questioned and recorded the statement of former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia for about five hours as part of its money laundering probe into alleged irregularities in the excise policy matter, official sources said. The questioning is expected to continue over the next few days. The federal probe agency also made a fresh arrest in this case as it took into custody Hyderabad-based liquor businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai on Monday evening, they said. The ED's investigators reached the Tihar Jail to question and record the statement of Sisodia under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Mehrauli demolition: Kejriwal directs administration to help those affected

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday directed the South district administration to provide families affected by the recent DDA demolition drive in Mehrauli with tents, food and other basic amenities, officials said. This comes two days after Lt Governor V K Saxena directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to stop demolitions in Mehrauli and Ladha Sarai villages till further instructions. The DDA, which comes under the BJP-led government at the Centre, had launched the demolition drive in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park area on February 10, triggering protests from locals. Delhi: Maximum temperature expected to touch 30 degrees Celsius by Sunday

Delhi on Wednesday logged a minimum temperature of 10.9 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, the India Meteorological Department said. The maximum temperature is predicted to settle around 28 degrees Celsius. The maximum is expected to touch the 30 degrees Celsius mark by Sunday, it said. Surface winds gusting up to 30 km per hour are predicted during the day. The capital had on February 10 logged a maximum temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius, the highest in the month in two years, according to IMD data. On Tuesday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 25.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

Kejriwal govt asks DDA to stop anti-encroachment drive in Delhi's Mehrauli

The Arvind Kejriwal government on Saturday asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to stop its anti-encroachment drive in Mehrauli, officials said. Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot has ordered a fresh demarcation exercise in the area, they said. The minister said the residents of the area cannot be displaced until a fresh demarcation is conducted, officials said. The DDA had based the Revenue department's demarcation as its ground for demolition of alleged encroachments, they claimed. Nearly 1,200 square metres of government land was reclaimed during the anti-encroachment drive in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park area a day ago, DDA officials said on Saturday. National capital records minimum temperature of 9.8 degrees Celsius: IMD

The minimum temperature in the national capital on Sunday settled at 9.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average, the India Meteorological Department said. The relative humidity recorded at 8:30 am was 88 per cent, the IMD said. The weather department has forecast mainly clear skies for the day, with the maximum temperature expected to settle around 25 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 25.3 degrees Celsius and a low of 9 degrees Celsius.

Delhi: Multi-layer security cover in place for Republic Day celebrations

A multi-layer security cover is in place for the Republic Day celebrations here on Thursday with police conducting anti-sabotage checks, verification drives and patrolling to thwart any untoward incident, according to officials. Around 6,000 security personnel have been deployed in the New Delhi district and 24 help desks set up for those attending the celebrations at the Kartavya Path, they said. Police said that around 60,000 to 65,000 people are expected to attend the Republic Day celebrations. This year, entry is based on QR code given on passes. A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal Tuesday afternoon with tremors also being felt in parts of Delhi, national capital region and Jaipur. The quake struck at 2:28 pm with the epicentre in Nepal at a place 148 km east of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, the National Centre for Seismology said. "It was scary as the tremors hit," said Shantanu, who resides in a high-rise tower in Noida. Amit Pandey, a Delhi resident, said, "I was on the fifth floor of one of the blocks at the Civic Centre. I felt a growling noise beneath my feet and a mild shake, when the tremor passed through perhaps." Many others in the towering Civic Centre, the headqauters of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, also felt the tremors which hit when the House proceedings were underway. Tremors were felt in parts of Rajasthan's capital city of Jaipur as well. There was no immediate report of loss of life or property from there.
