Delhi coaching centre deaths: Owner, coordinator arrested, flouted norms

The owner and the coordinator of a coaching centre where three civil services aspirants died due to rain-induced flooding in the basement were arrested on Sunday even as protests erupted in the area over the incident. According to officials, the coaching institute had permission to use the basement as a store room, but it was being used as library which is a violation of the rules. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi directed MCD commissioner to take strict action against institutes that are using basements for commercial purposes in violation of building bye-laws and against any officers responsible for the incident. Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg said the institute was functioning in violation of the norms of the fire department. "The building has fire NOC, but in the NOC they had shown the basement will be used as store room. The Delhi Police on Tuesday filed its 500-odd page charge sheet against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar in a case of alleged assault against AAP MP Swati Maliwal. Over 12,000 drunk drivers fined between January 1 to June 30: Delhi police

The traffic police has fined more than 12,000 people for drunk driving from January 1 till June 30, an almost 27 per cent increase over the corresponding period of the previous year, officials said on Saturday. The highest number of fines, 770, were issued in the Rajouri Garden Circle area, followed by 514 in the Samaypur Badli Circle area, data showed. From January 1 till June 30, police have fined 12,468 people for drunk driving, compared to 9,837 during the same period last year. This is an almost 27 per cent increase in prosecutions, the traffic police said. Besides Rajouri Garden and Samaypur Badli, the Rohini (441), Punjabi Bagh (387), Mehrauli (367), Mayur Vihar (364), Narela Circle (364), Kalkaji (344), Karol Bagh (342) and the Sadar Bazar (342) circles were among the areas that reported a high number of cases of drunk driving, the data showed. Over 100 Delhi police stations hold awareness sessions on new criminal laws

As the three new criminal laws came into effect, the Delhi Police organised awareness sessions at more than 100 police stations across the national capital for common people, officials said on Monday. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) on Monday replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. 3 injured after being hit by car driven by minor in Delhi's Geeta Colony

Three people were injured when they were hit by a car, which was being driven by a minor, in east Delhi's Geeta Colony area on Saturday morning, police said. The incident occurred at Patparganj Road around 7.30 am. Three people were standing on the roadside when a Baleno going towards Krishna Nagar hit the trio before stopping. A 16-year-old boy was driving the car with his friend, also a teenager. They were caught by the passersby and handed over to the police, a police officer said. The car is registered in the name of the minor's father, the officer said. The injured have been admitted to the hospital, police said.

AAP calls for protest at BJP headquarters, Delhi police says no permission

With AAP set to hold a protest at the BJP headquarters on Saturday, the Delhi Police said the party had not taken its permission to hold the demonstration. AAP called for a gherao of the BJP headquarters at 11.30 am against the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the liquor policy-linked money-laundering case. A senior police officer said arrangements were being made to stop the protesters as no permission had been taken for any protest at the BJP headquarters at DDU Marg in central Delhi. Barricades have been put up and paramilitary personnel deployed at the site, the officer said. If required, the protesters might be detained as Section 144 of the CrPC has already been imposed at DDU Marg, he added. The officer said the road had yet to be closed. Burger King murder: Delhi Police arrests man who brought 2 shooters to spot

Delhi Police on Friday said it has made its first arrest in connection with the recent murder of a man at a food outlet in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden. The arrested accused is the one who allegedly brought the two shooters in his vehicle at the spot to commit the murder, a senior police officer said. The accused is being further interrogated, he added. Aman Joon (26), hailing from Haryana was shot dead by two gangsters while he was sitting with a woman inside a Burger King outlet in Rajouri Garden's J Block on June 18, according to police. The victim had suffered 38 gunshot wounds, the police had said. Joon's killing was an outcome of a gang war between jailed gangsters Neeraj Bawana and Ashok Pradhan, they had said. The officer said that three other suspects, the woman who accompanied Joon and the two shooters, are still at large.

Heavy rain leaves Delhi waterlogged, traffic comes to a standstill

As heavy rain lashed Delhi early Friday, waterlogging in many areas of the city led to a flood-like situation causing heavy traffic jams on the roads. The Delhi Traffic Police issued alerts to notify the affected carriageways, advising commuters to plan their journey accordingly. Visuals coming from various parts of the city show several areas inundated with water, leading to long traffic jams which affected commuters, especially, office-goers. Threat emails: Delhi Police to have bomb disposal squads in each district

After bomb threats over email to schools, hospitals and other establishments in the national capital, the Delhi Police has planned to expand its bomb detection, disposal and dog squads in each of its district for swift action, official sources said. There are five bomb disposal squads, 18 bomb detection teams and one dog squad with 70 canines for Delhi's 15 police districts. All three units are under the Crime Branch. In the past two months, there have been at least seven instances of hospitals, schools, colleges, museums, railway establishments, prisons and government offices getting bomb threats via email that were sent using virtual private networks (VPN) or proxy servers. The threats were later found to be hoaxes and are being investigated by the Special Cell. Atishi urges protection for major pipelines as water crisis intensifies

Delhi Water minister Atishi on Sunday wrote to Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora requesting deployment of personnel for patrolling and protecting major pipelines for next 15 days, as the national capital grapples with a water crisis. In her letter, the minister said Delhi is reeling under a severe heat wave and a water crisis. "Due to shortage of water being received in the Yamuna, water production has fallen by around 70 MGD and many parts of Delhi are experiencing water shortage. In this situation, every drop of water becomes precious," the letter said. The Delhi Jal Board has deployed patrol teams for the main water distribution network that carries raw water to the Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) and then from them to the main underground reservoirs in different parts of the city, Atishi said in the letter.
