Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday increased the ex-gratia amount from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for kin of those who died due to cyclone Titli and its after effects. An additional Rs. 6 lakh will also be disbursed from the Chief Minister Relief Fund.The Chief Minister made the announcement after touring the affected districts.Patnaik assured that vulnerability mapping of all villages and habitations located in hilly and difficult regions will be done and all facilities will be extended to the affected people when they shift to other locations. Citing acute shortage of coal in thermal power plants in Karnataka, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has urged Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal to ensure adequate supply to the state. He said the RaichurThermal Power Station (RTPS) with 1,720 MW capacity has zerocoal stock now as it was "short supplied" about six lakh tonnes by the WCL, a central-government owned coal company. "WCL has short supplied about six lakh tonnes of coal to RTPS this year against the Fuel Supply Agreement quantity, resulting in no coal in stock," the chief minister was quoted as saying in an official release here Wednesday. Kumaraswamy asked Goyal to make adequate supply of coal to the state thermal units from Mahanadi Coal Fields (MCL).

Ten people, including four women, were killed in Odisha's Nuapada district early Wednesday when their car collided head-on with a truck, a senior police official said. The victims, mostly members of one family, were on their way home to Pithora in Chhattisgarh after offering prayers at the Vaishno Devi temple in the district when the accident occurred near Silada on NH-35 around 2.30am, Nuapada Superintendent of Police Smit P Parmar said. The impact of the collision was so severe that all 10 persons on board the vehicle, including four women and the driver, died on spot, he said. The truck driver, however, abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot, Parmar said. "After getting information, police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the site and pulled the bodies out of the mangled vehicle," the SP said. The bodies have been handed over to the family members after post-mortem, he said.
A mechanical failure had led to the derailment of New Farakka Express last week, a preliminary investigation report suggested on Wednesday.Seven passengers died and more than 30 others were injured after nine coaches along with the train engine derailed near Raebareli on October 11.The Commission of Railway Safety, in their probe report, has suggested that train was given a green signal to proceed despite the failure of a point, which should have created a path for the coaches.Following the accident, a signal inspector and a maintainer were suspended.SK Pathak, the commissioner of railway safety, in his investigation report, recommended that the Railways should decide upon a reasonable time and number of attempts after which a point, not responding to the command from the control panel, is to be declared as failed.Railway safety commissioner also suggests that measures should be taken to avoid tampering of the signalling circuit; drivers should be trained to use the independent loco ..
A family of six people, including two children, on a pilgrimage were killed and 15 others injured when a speeding lorry hit their parked van in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh early Wednesday, police said. The victims, hailing from Old Town in Kurnool, were on their way to a 'dargah' in Yellarti when the accident occurred near Pedahoturu village in complete darkness, killing six people on the spot. The van in which the pilgrims were travelling suffered a break down due to some engine problem and the driver had parked it by the roadside for repair. It was a hit and run case. Most of the passengers got down from the vehicle as it broke down and was being repaired. Nine persons, including the driver and conductor, of a DTC bus were injured as the vehicle overturned after being hit by a truck under the Wazirabad flyover in north Delhi Wednesday, the police said. The incident took place at 6 am when the bus was coming from Bhalswa Dairy en route Kashmiri Gate, a police officer said. Twenty-one persons were on board the DTC bus that met with an accident, the officer said. All the injured persons were rushed to Sushruta Trauma Centre and were discharged after treatment, Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) said. The truck driver fled from the spot soon after the accident, police said, adding the truck has been seized. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Eight women were killed when a passenger train hit a rickshaw at an unmanned crossing in Pakistan's Sindh province on Tuesday. The Khushhal Khan Khattak collided with the vehicle carrying 15 travelers at the Haibat Shaheed railway station in Kashmore at around 1:30pm.
