The death toll in the flooding caused by a dam collapse in Laos has climbed to 36 while 98 are still missing, national daily Vientiane Times reported on Monday.
Five members of a family, including three children, were injured when a part of a house collapsed in Nimayu village in the district, police said today. The incident occurred last evening under Charthawal police station, they said. Charan Singh (52), his wife Sunita (50) , Anmol (4), Harsh (6) and Adarsh (7) were later shifted to a hospital, they added. In another incident, over 4,000 chicks were killed when the wall of a poultry farm collapsed during rains in Gharidolat village of Shamli district yesterday, they said. The loss was estimated to be worth to lakhs of rupees.
Nine people were killed and 15 injured in a blaze that broke out today at a hospice for the terminally ill near Taiwan's capital Taipei, fire officials said. All of the 36 people inside, including three staff, were evacuated after the fire started at the hospice on the seventh floor of a nine-storey hospital in New Taipei city. Sixteen had cardiac arrests and seven were revived. The other nine died with the cause of death given as smoke inhalation, according to the local fire department. A fire at a nursing home in Taiwan has left nine people dead and 16 injured. Authorities were still investigating the cause of the blaze that broke out before 5 a.m. (local time) this morning and was extinguished roughly one hour later. Ten people were killed and 35 injured when a bus carrying fans of Barcelona SC, Ecuador's most popular football club, crashed, traffic police said. The bus was heading from the southern city of Cuenca to the coastal city of Guayaquil yesterday, where Barcelona is based, after a local tournament game. The bus apparently ran off the road and flipped around 2130 GMT, Ecuador's Transit Commission said in a statement. At 6:58 a.m. Sunday, the magnitude 6,.4 earthquake struck an area 42 miles (67 kilometers) east of Kavik River Camp and 343 miles (551 kilometers) northeast of Fairbanks, the state's second-biggest city. The agency says the earthquake had a depth of about 6 miles (9.9 kilometers.) State seismologist Mike West told the Anchorage Daily News that the quake was the biggest recorded in the North Slope by a substantial amount. "This is a very significant event that will take us some time to understand," he told the Daily News. The previous most powerful quake in the North Slope was in 1995 at magnitude 5.2, West told the newspaper. The jump from a 5.2 to Sunday's 6.4 is significant because earthquakes rapidly grow in strength as magnitude rises, he said. "That's why at 6.4 this changes how we think about the region," West said. Police in Pakistan say a methane gas explosion in a coal mine has killed at least four miners and trapped 13 others. Local police official Wajeet Khan says the blast happened Sunday in the village of Sanjdi, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Quetta. He says rescuers have retrieved four bodies and that 13 other miners are missing and feared dead, with rescue operations hindered by the gas leak. Two Austrians -- a man in his fifties and a teenager -- died today when their glider crashed to the ground in the Champsaur valley in the southern French Alps, sources said. "The alert was sounded by witnesses who saw the glider fall," a local official said, adding that the weather conditions had been "good". Two rescuers and a doctor were sent to the scene, but the exact circumstances of the accident were not yet known. The accident happened at a place called Roche Rousse, at an altitude of 2,515 metres (8,280 feet), the local official told AFP. A 25-year-old woman and her five-year-old son were charred to death while her husband suffered serious burn injuries after fire broke out at their home in the district, police said. Station House Officer Munshiganj Javed Ikbal Khan said that the fire broke out when Dinesh Kashyap of village Semra under the Munshiganj police station was filling oil in his bike at his home. They were were admitted to a hospital but the woman and the minor boy died on the way, while the man is undergoing treatment at a trauma centre in Lucknow, he said.

Five persons died and two others were critically injured in a road accident when a truck and a car collided head on in Assam's Nagaon district, police said today. The two speeding vehicles collided at Rangagara near Samaguri at around midnight killing three persons on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Two of the critically injured persons have been shifted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital. The four of the dead have been identified as Rashidul Haque, Saiful Islam, Sariful Islam and Balin Das while the fifth was yet to be identified, police added.
