Four CCL workers killed, 11 injured in wall collapse

Four workers of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) were killed and 11 injured when the wall of a resting shed fell on them in Hazaribagh district today, police said. The incident occurred when the workers of CCL's Tapin coal mining project were taking rest under the shed after their afternoon meal. A coal operating machine hit the wall of the shed and it fell on the workers, burying them under the debris, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Composite Control Room) Sahdeo Sau said. Teams from the police and the CCL reached the spot and started rescue operations. Four bodies were recovered from the debris and sent to Hazaribagh for post-mortem, he said, adding the injured were shifted to hospital. Those killed were identified as Amrit Munda, Kaila Ganjhu, Somar Munda and Mithun Mahato, the police said. A case of negligence was registered against the driver of the coal operating machine, the police said.

Over Rs 8,000 lakh sanctioned for fire-fighting equipment in state-run hospitals: TN govt to HC

A sum of Rs 8,958.25 lakh has been sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government to provide fire-fighting equipment to government hospitals in the state, the Madras High Court was informed. This was stated in a counter-affidavit by the state health secretary on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking to make mandatory ramps from the top-most floor to the ground floor of hospitals for easy rescue of patients in case of a fire. The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice PT Asha on Friday adjourned a PIL by Jawahar Shanmgum to July 30. When the matter came up, a counter affidavit was filed to give details on the fire fighting arrangements that were made in 34 government medical college hospitals and institutions at a cost of Rs 3,703.42 lakh. The affidavit said the facility would also be introduced in the Institute of Child Health and Hospital, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Government Hospital for Women and Children, all in Chennai, at a .

Traffic crawls in many parts of the city due to waterlogging caused by rain

Heavy rain lashed the national capital region this evening, causing traffic congestion at several places. The Delhi Traffic Police was constantly updating Delhiites about the traffic situation across the national capital. Waterlogging was reported on GT Karnal Road from Singhu Border to Azadpur near Jahangirpuri and Adarsh Nagar metro station. Situation was no different on the NH-9 near Ghazipur Murga Mandi. Due to heavy rains, waterlogging was reported at Hathi Khana Chowk, Sadar Bazaar. Areas from Nangloi to Bahadurgarh near Mundka metro station and Rajdhani Park metro station was also waterlogged.

Eight injured as two-storey building collapses in Pune

Eight persons, including four children, were injured after a two-storey residential building in Keshavnagar area in Mundhwa here collapsed around noon today, police said. While four of the victims are members of the building owners' family, the others are members of two tenant families, police said. "The building was around 30 years old. Located near a nullah, it was already in a precarious condition and incessant rains might have worsened its condition, leading to its collapse around noon," a police officer said. The fire brigade officials rushed to the spot and rescued all those trapped under the debris, including the four children, he said. According to him, the building was owned by Kailas Bhandwalkar, who is also among the eight injured. Odisha CM reviews rain situation; 2 killed in wall collapse

Heavy rain continued to lash parts of Odisha for the second day today, prompting Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to order relief measures in the affected areas of the state. At least two people were killed in Raygada district of Odisha this morning when a wall collapsed on them due to the rainfall, official sources said. Efforts underway to ensure strike does not affect supplies: U'khand govt

Kerala rains: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju promises more aid

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today promised more central assistance to Kerala to deal with "unprecedented rains and floods", a day after Rs 80 crore were sanctioned to the state as initial aid. A central government's inter-ministerial team headed by a joint secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs will be sent to Kerala to assess the quantum of damages and losses occurred in various sectors due to the rains and floods, he said. Kerala Floods: Centre sanctions Rs 80 crore

Air India flight makes priority landing following technical

A Chennai-bound Air India flight from Mumbai carrying 111 passengers besides crew made a priority landing at the international airport here today following some technical problem, an airport official said. The official said an alert was sounded before the aircraft landed under 'local standby' protocol. The term local standby refers to sounding an alert to fire and rescue services to tackle any untoward incidents upon the arrival of an aircraft which is landing in emergency conditions. "We got a request from the pilot asking us to be on local standby as the flight was approaching the airport. We alerted the (fire and rescue) services to be ready. Soon after it landed, the passengers alighted and the plane was towed away to a bay," he said. Later, the snag was rectified and the plane resumed its journey to Delhi, he said. However, the Air India officials were not available for a comment.

Mentally-challenged man run over by train in JK's Udhampur

In the third such incident this week, a 67-year-old mentally-challenged man died after being hit by a train in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said today. Prem Chand, a resident of Sunal village, was crossing the railway tracks near Udhampur railway station when he was hit by a train yesterday, the Government Railway Police official said. He said the body was handed over to his family after legal formalities. Chand was the third person to lost his life after being hit by a train in Jammu region since Wednesday. Two women, including a resident of Chhattisgarh, died in similar accidents in Samba and Jammu districts on July 18 and 19.

At least 10 dead in Vietnam floods

At least 10 people have died after floods spurred by Typhoon rains struck central and northern Vietnam, authorities said today. The southeast Asian country is prone to monsoon storms and floods, which frequently claim hundreds of lives every year. 1968 plane crash victim's body found in H-P glacier

After a span of 50 years, the body of a 1968 Indian Air Force (IAF) plane crash victim was found in Himachal Pradesh's Dhaka glacier base camp. A mountaineering expedition recovered the body on July 1.On 7 February 1968, an aircraft AN-12 of the Indian Air Force was flying from Chandigarh to Leh with 102 personnel on board. Due to bad weather, the pilot decided to turn back while approaching Leh.Suddenly the aircraft went missing. It later crashed in the Lahaul valley in Himachal. In 2003, the remnants of the plane were recovered in the Dhaka glacier during an expedition.On July 1, the mountaineering team which was on a cleanliness drive on Chandrabhaga-13 peak, came across the body. The team also found some more parts of the aircraft. The cleanliness drive was organised by Indian Mountaineering Foundation.

Death toll in U'khand's Tehri accident rises to 16

The death toll in Uttarkhand's Tehri district accident, where a bus rolled down a 250-metre deep gorge, has risen to 16, officials said today. Ashraf Ali (35) and Manoj Yadav (28), both hailing from Bettiah in Bihar's West Champaran district, succumbed to their injures at the AIIMS hospital, office of the Medical Superintendent, AIIMS, Rishikesh said. Ali died late last night, while Yadav succumbed to his injuries this morning, it said. They were among the 11 injured persons who were admitted to the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh, it said. Fourteen persons, including two women, were killed and 17 others injured when a roadways bus had fallen into a gorge on the Chamba-Uttarkashi highway in the district on July 19.
