Chhattisgarh: 4 students hurt in school vehicle mishap

A vehicle carrying students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, located in NTPC township in Korba, fell off a 30-feet high bridge near Sichai Colony (darri) earlier today.According to initial reports, 15 students were inside the vehicle when it fell off bridge. Of the 15, four students were critically injured.The injured students have been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.The driver of the vehicle has been arrested for negligence.

Centre has approved Rs 80-cr aid to Kerala to deal with flooding: Rijiju

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 80 crore to Kerala as initial assistance to deal with "unprecedented rains and floods," Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said today. A central government team headed by Rijiju and accompanied by Union Tourism Minister Alphons Kannanthanam arrived in Kochi this morning. The team will visit the rain-affected districts, including Kottayam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam. "We issued Rs 80 crore yesterday and the state government has some amount," Rijiju said, adding the Centre and the state would work together to deal with the situation. He said damages caused due to flooding was being calculated. "We will extend whatever possible help from the Government of India because Kerala has witnessed unprecedented rains and floods. We are with the people of Kerala and the central government will do whatever is required," he told reporters. Four killed, 1 injured in accident in UP

At least four persons were killed and a man was injured when their car dashed against a stationary truck near Safedabad crossing here, police said today. The driver of the car lost control over the vehicle and dashed against the truck, killing four people on the spot yesterday, they said. The deceased, identified as Pavan (38), Shailesh (40), Rajiv (41) and Nagendra (38), were on their way to Lucknow to attend a meeting, police said, adding that the driver was seriously injured and admitted to the Lucknow Trauma Centre.

US: Hundreds at vigils mourn victims of Branson boat accident

A Missouri town known for its country shows and entertainment mourned today after 17 people including nine from one family were killed when a tourist boat sank on churning water in a sudden storm. The grief-stricken community hosted two separate vigils Friday night. In one, about 300 people gathered in the parking lot of Ride the Ducks of Branson and sang "Amazing Grace." Firefighters injured as blaze near Yosemite grows

A fire that claimed the life of one firefighter and injured two others near California's Yosemite national park has almost doubled in size in three days, authorities have said. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said the so-called Ferguson fire had spread to an area of 22,892 acres (92.6 square kilometers), and is so far only 7 per cent contained. More than 2,700 people are tackling the blaze, which started a week ago in the Sierra Nevada forest. Currently, there is no prediction as to when it will be completely contained. 17 dead after duck boat capsizes in Missouri

At least 17 people were killed after an amphibious tour boat carrying 31 people capsized on Table Rock Lake near Branson town in Missouri.The 'Ride the Ducks' boat tipped over when strong winds and large waves swept through the area, as a result killing the driver as well, CNN reported.Rescue authorities fished out the bodies from the lake and the age range of the deceased varies from one year to 70 years.A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Branson at around 6:30 p.m on (Friday local time), about 30 minutes before the boat capsized.There were several reports of trees falling down and structural damage, with winds reaching a high of 63 mph.Missouri Governor Michael Parson said that nine members of a family were killed in the tragedy. Heavy rain alert issued in Himachal Pradesh

The India Meteorological Development (IMD) issued a heavy rain alert for Bilaspur, Shimla, Mandi, Kangra and Sirmaur districts of Himachal Pradesh on Friday.The local weather centre at Shimla reported that almost all parts of the state will receive rain for the next three days.A heavy rain warning has been issued for Monday and Sunday.The director of IMD, Himachal Pradesh, Dr. K.J. Those who target MSRTC buses during agitations would face

Maharashtra transport minister Diwakar Raote today announced in the Legislative Council that if the state transport buses are damaged during agitations, a compensation would be recovered from the culprits who would face criminal cases. Eleven ST buses were damaged during the recent agitation of milk farmers in the state, the minister said. It caused a loss of about Rs 1. 1 crore to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), he said. As many as 222 MSRTC buses were damaged since last June in various agitations in the state, Raote said. Appealing people not to damage buses, he said henceforth damage caused to MSRTC buses will be recovered from agitators and criminal cases for destruction of government property would be filed against them.

Four persons including two women were killed when lightning struck them in different places in East Singhbhum district today, police said. Two persons including a woman were killed when lightning struck them during rains while they were working in the field at Kantasole village and Kurmada village, the police said. Two others including a woman were killed in Ghatsila police station limit of the district after they were struck by thunderbolt, the police added.

Woman killed, daughter, husband injured as dumper truck hits bike

A woman was killed and her husband and daughter were injured after a dumper truck hit their motorcycle near Patel Nagar crossing in Ghaziabad today, police said. SP (City), Akash Tomar, said the accident took place when Pramod Gaur (45) was on way to drop his wife Darshan Gaur (40) and daughter Pirya to school. A speeding dumper truck hit their motorcycle near Patel Nagar crossing, Tomar said. The victims were rushed to the district government hospital where the doctors declared the woman brought dead, he said, adding that the injured are undergoing treatment. The driver of the dumper truck fled the spot with his vehicle, Tomar said. Efforts are on to identify the vehicle with the help of footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area, he added.

17 dead as tourist boat sinks in US lake

A tourist boat capsized and sank in a sudden storm on a lake in Missouri, leaving at least 17 people dead, as authorities search for three others still missing. Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said 31 people had been aboard the amphibious vessel, known as a duck boat for its wheels that allow it to ride on land in addition to floating low on the water. Divers were scouring the lake for survivors and bodies following the accident overnight on Table Rock Lake, officials said. Several of the dead were children. Rader told journalists that some of the passengers managed to reach shore after the boat capsized and began to sink. Building collapse: Rescue operation ends

Rescue workers ended their operation today at Shahberi village in Greater Noida where two adjacent buildings collapsed on Tuesday night, killing nine people, officials said. "The search operation has been completed and the debris cleared. No more bodies were found in the rubble," National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Deputy Commandant Rajkamal Malik told PTI. The operation ended around 5 p.m., after a continuous search for survivors that lasted about 65 hours. Nobody was brought out alive from the rubble, but workers pulled out nine bodies, including that of a toddler. The last body was retrieved from the rubble yesterday morning, while the other eight were pulled out by Wednesday night. "The search has been completed and the police have certified it. No more bodies were found," Deputy Superintendent of Police Awneesh Kumar said. A six-floor under-construction building had crashed on a five-storey building next to it in Shahberi village under Bisrakh police station area around 9.30 .

German police: 9 injured in bus attack, suspect arrested

A man apparently armed with a knife attacked passengers on a busy bus today in the northern German city of Luebeck before being overpowered and arrested, authorities said. Nine people were reported injured, one seriously. Authorities had no immediate information on the assailant's motive for the attack on a city bus in Luebeck, which is near the Baltic coast northeast of Hamburg. Prosecutor Ulla Hingst told n-tv television the bus driver stopped the vehicle and let the passengers out after the attack.
