Jammu-Srinagar highway reopens hours after landslide

The 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway was reopened for traffic hours after it was closed today due to a landslide triggered by rains in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, the police said. The highway was closed due to a landslide in Ramban's Panthal area this morning, they said. BRO personnel and machines were pressed into service to clear the highway and it was reopened for traffic after a few hours, the police added. Two-way traffic of light motor vehicles (LMVs) is plying on the highway, while heavy vehicles have been allowed only for one-way traffic from Kashmir to Jammu, they said.

At least 10 people were killed after a major fire broke out at a firecracker godown near Koti Lingala Temple in Telangana's Warangal district on Wednesday.The collector of Warangal district confirmed the report and said that four fire tenders were present at the spot to douse the flames.The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.More details are awaited.

2 killed as small plane crashes in eastern Austria

An emergency official says a small plane has crashed at an airfield in eastern Austria, killing two people aboard. Lower Austria province fire service spokesman Franz Resperger told the Austria Press Agency that the aircraft came down nose-first today morning in a field next to the runway at the Voeslau-Kottingbrunn airfield, south of Vienna. The two men were trapped in the badly damaged cockpit. There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash.

10 killed, 2 injured in blaze at firecracker unit in T'gana

A massive blaze erupted at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Telangana's Warangal district today, killing at least 10 workers and wounding two others, officials said. The fire, which broke out around 11 a.m in Kotilingala area on the outskirts of the Warangal city, is suspected to have been caused by electrical short-circuit, they said. "Ten bodies have been recovered from the fire accident site. Two injured persons have been rescued and rushed to hospital," Warangal (Rural) District Collector M Haritha, who is supervising the rescue efforts, told PTI by phone from the scene of the tragedy. Six fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze has been extinguished, she said, adding three of those dead were charred beyond recognition. The bodies have been sent for postmortem and efforts are on to ascertain the identities of the deceased, the official said. Gadkari flags off taxi ambulance services

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari today flagged off Wagon Cab's taxi ambulance services here. A startup, Wagon Cab claims to be India's first road emergency cab services provider. The launch comes in the the backdrop of India accounting for 5 lakh road crashes annually worldwide in which 1.5 lakh people die. Wagon Cab, which provides medically-trained drivers in its ambulance-taxis, said in the initial phase it will launch 200 cabs. The drivers will be trained to handle critical situations and provide first-aid, for which they will be paid additional Rs 500, Wagon Cab said in a statement. NGO Das Foundation is supporting the initiative. "I firmly believe that this particular initiative will really help out those in need...Most of the drivers spend maximum time on roads, they are real ambassadors of road safety, and with their help a lot can be achieved, said Yogita Bhayana, founder of Das Foundation. Cracks found on bridge at Grant Road station, traffic diverted

Cracks were found on a bridge at the Grant Road station in south Mumbai, hours after an over- bridge collapsed at a railway station in suburban Andheri, the city civic body said today. The cracks were found on the Frere bridge at Grant Road station around 11.30 pm yesterday following which the traffic was diverted, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The Mumbai Police also posted an update on its Twitter handle today saying the bridge has cracked, hence the traffic has been diverted to Nana Chowk towards Kennedy bridge. Engineers of the BMC's bridges department and other agencies have been asked to monitor and assess the condition of the Frere bridge, an official in the civic body's disaster management unit said. SpiceJet aircraft makes emergency landing due to low cabin pressure

Low cabin pressure mid-air forced a Delhi-bound SpiceJet aircraft from Mumbai, carrying over 100 passengers, to land at the city airport this morning under emergency conditions. All the passengers on-board were safe, an airline spokesperson said. "SpiceJet Boeing 737 aircraft (VT-SZB) was operating flight SG 160 Mumbai-Delhi. Enroute, the aircraft had a (cabin) pressure problem," the SpiceJet spokesperson said. Following the standard operating procedure, the crew diverted the aircraft to Ahmedabad, where it landed safely, he added. There were over 100 passengers on-board the plane, the spokesperson said.
