4.5 magnitude earthquake hits Himachal Pradesh

A mild earthquake measuring 4.5-magnitude on the Richter Scale hit Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.The tremors were felt at around 3:45 pm.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the earthquake originated at a depth of five km.The quake had the latitude of 32.5 North and Longitude of 76.1 East.However, no causalities or injuries have been reported as yet.

Gen. N C Vij calls for thrust on urban risk reduction

Members of the UNISDR ARISE FICCI Board today deliberated on the future course of actions to be taken to accelerate the pace of work in disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities with the new Chairperson, General N C Vij suggesting that the key activity to focus on was urban risk reduction and management instead of spreading resources thinly.Addressing the UNISDR ARISE FICCI members, Gen. Vij said, "We should focus our efforts on few key activities instead of all. Maha CM meets Bloomberg CEO in New York

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Bloomberg CEO Mike Bloomberg in New York and discussed expansion of the road safety initiative supported by the US-based company for which an MoU was signed in Mumbai in February 2015. "Substantial progress is seen with this initiative and many achievements were reviewed. This initiative resulted in less number of deaths in road accidents. Mike Bloomberg expressed intentions to work jointly with FinTech startup companies during discussions with Fadnavis," a statement from Chief Minister's office said today. Fadnavis is currently on a week-long visit to Dubai, Canada, and the United States. The Maharashtra government and Bloomberg Philanthropies had signed an agreement in 2015 to improve traffic situation in Mumbai over the next five years. Dust storms in UP claim 15 lives, leave 28 injured

Dust storms hit various parts of Uttar Pradesh, leaving 15 people dead and 28 injured, an official spokesman said today. "Fifteen people were killed in dust storm (since yesterday). Six died in Sitapur, three each in Gonda and Kaushambi and one each in Faizabad, Hardoi and Chitrakoot," the spokesman said here. Besides, 17 people were injured in Sitapur and 11 in Faizabad, he said. The weather department has warned that thunder squall is "very likely" at isolated places over the state tomorrow, while rain and thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds are "very likely" at isolated places during the next two days. Road accident: Court awards Rs 65 lakh compensation to victim's family

The family members of a 27-year-old man, who was killed in a road accident on Yamuna Expressway in 2013, have been awarded a compensation of over Rs 65 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here. MACT presiding officer S S Malhotra directed the Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Company Limited, the insurer of the offending vehicle, to pay Rs 65.22 lakh to north Delhi-resident Raj Kumar's family -- his wife, toddler son and parents. "It stands proved that the accident in question occurred due to rash or negligence driving of offending vehicle and the respondents have failed to prove that there were any contributory negligence on the part of deceased who suffered fatal injuries in that accident," the tribunal said. 6 killed, 28 hurt as bus falls into gorge on ghat road in TN

Six passengers were killed and 28 others injured when a bus fell into a 500-feet deep gorge near here in the hilly Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu today, police said. The driver of the state-run transport corporation bus was trying to avoid a pit on the ghat road when the mishap occurred at Mandada, about 10 km from here. Six people, including two women, were killed on the spot, police said adding 28 people were injured, some of them seriously, police said. Personnel of the Fire and Rescue force, police and state disaster management agency rescued the injured. Of them, ninteen people had been taken to the government hospital in neighbouring Coimbatore while others admitted to the government hospital here. The bus was proceeding to nearby Coonoor from here. Landslides hamper train services in Assam

Torrential rains in Assam have affected train services in the state, cutting off connectivity while affecting thousands of travellers.As per a release from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NPR), at least four trains have been suspended due to a landslide on Lumding - Badarpur hill section in Assam following torrential rains in the area.Landslides have occurred between Dautohaja-Phiding, Phiding station yard, Phiding-Mahur and Jatingalampur-New Harangajao areas.The landslides occurred between 1:30 am and 3:30 am on Thursday morning. As a result, train services running over the affected section has been suspended.The affected trains are - Guwahati-Silchar fast passenger, Sealdah-Silchar Kanchenjunga Express, Silchar-Guwahati Fast passenger and Agartala-Sealdah Kanchenjunga Express. Merchant vessel SSL Kolkata catches fire, all 22 members rescued

The Indian Coast Guard ship Rajkiran and Dornier aircraft on Thursday rescued all the 22 crew members on board Indian flag Container vessel, MV SSL Kolkata after it caught fire last night.Coast Guard Dornier aircraft was launched from Kolkata while ICGS Rajkiran from Haldia reached area at about 08:30 AM to rescue the all-Indian crew.The rescue operation was undertaken by the Coast Guard units under bad weather and rough sea condition."No spill of fuel as of now, however, if such has happened coast guard will take care of it. Container ship catches fire, 22 mariners rescued

The Coast Guard today rescued all 22 mariners from a container ship that caught fire about 55 nautical miles from Haldia in the Bay of Bengal, a senior Coast Guard official said here. The container ship 'MV SSL Kolkata' caught fire at around midnight in the Bay of Bengal and sought rescue and firefighting assistance. A Coast Guard ship and one of its Dornier aircraft were despatched from its base at Haldia Port, which reached the ship early this morning, Coast Guard Commander (NE) Inspector General K S Sheoran said here. "All the 22 survivors including the captain of the ship were picked up by the Coast Guard vessel," Sheoran said. The crew of the ship was rescued amid rough seas and inclement weather, he said. "All the seamen are safe and on Coast Guard vessel which is headed towards Haldia port," Sheoran said.

Torrential rain in NE states leaves 4 dead, thousands homeless

Torrential rain in the past 48 hours has wreaked havoc in the north-eastern states, claiming four lives in Tripura and Manipur, disrupting rail services in Assam and rendering thousands homeless across the region. In Tripura, the state government has sought Army and NDRF assistance from the Centre for evacuation and rescue operations in marooned areas of the state. Four killed, 10 missing after landslide in Kerala

Four people, including three children, died and at least 10 others were reported missing after a landslide struck a remote village in Kozhikode district early today, as heavy rainfall continued to batter northern Kerala. With this, the toll in rain-related incidents rose to 27 since the onset of the southwest monsoon in late May, official sources said. The four people died in Kattipara village in Thamarassery taluk. Rescue operations were underway to trace those missing. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed the deaths in the landslide and described them as "very tragic". The area has been receiving heavy rainfall since last night. "Chief secretary and respective district collectors were directed to take urgent relief measures in the rain-affected areas. Singapore Airlines (SIA) is looking into allegations of rude crew behaviour made by a passenger on a recent flight from Singapore to Kolkata which was delayed by almost three hours, a media report said here today. On June 8, Flight SQ516 had experienced technical issues on the ground, resulting in a delay of two hours and 52 minutes.
