Kochi merchant ship fire: Crew member succumbs to burns

A crew member of a domestic merchant ship that caught fire off the coast here, has succumbed to severe burns. Doctors at the Medical Trust Hospital here declared YogeshK Solanki from Daman and Diudead on arrival last night, a hospital spokesman said today. The ship "MV Nalini" caught fire while being anchored at 14.5 nautical miles southwest off the city last evening. The vessel had lost power and propulsion, prompting it to send out a request to Navy for evacuation of its crew members. A Defence spokesperson here, quoting a message received from the ship with 22 crew members onboard, had said a man in his late 20s had suffered 80 per cent burns. The situation was brought under control yesterday itself. The ship is a chemical tanker, and was carrying naphtha. The Southern Naval command, the Coast Guard and other agencies had made arrangements for the rescue operations.

Thunderstorm kills 10 in UP

At least 10 people were killed and 28 others injured after a deadly thunderstorm struck parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.Out of the 10 people, three died in Gonda, one in Faizabad and six in Sitapur.The Meteorological Centre, Lucknow had earlier issued warnings of thunderstorm accompanied with squall, dust storm and rain in parts of Uttar Pradesh.This comes after 15 people were reported dead and nine others injured after a thunderstorm hit various regions of the state on June 2.The causalities were reported from Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Amroha, and Sambhal districts of the state.

Delhi: Air quality crosses severe level as dusty haze persists

Delhi residents woke up to yet another dusty morning on Thursday as the air quality in the national capital remained on the 'severe' and 'hazardous' level in many areas because of a ground-level dust storm in western India.Strong-anti cyclonic winds, blowing from Rajasthan, are the reason behind the worsening air quality.According to AQICN, on Thursday morning, PM10 (particles with the diameter less than 10mm) level was beyond severe at 778 in Delhi-NCR area and 824 in Delhi particularly, leading to hazy conditions and limiting visibility.While the AQI of R.K. Puram saw a drastic jump from 660 to 999, other places like Mandir Marg (770), Dwarka (347), DITE Okhla (801), Punjabi Bagh (646) and ITO (816) saw the air quality plummet to hazardous levels.The air quality of Lodhi Road area and Rajpath area remained in 'poor' category at 262.According to reports, the current conditions are likely to last till Friday.It is to be noted that a number of dust storms have struck the northern part .

Airplanes collide in Alaska; searchers head for wreckage

Authorities say two airplanes collided in the skies over Alaska north of Anchorage. Alaska State Troopers shortly after noon yesterday were notified of the crash in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Spokeswoman Megan Peters says wreckage of one airplane was spotted a short time later near the mouth of the Susitna River. The number of people on board was not known. Search and rescue teams were launched after the crash. Landing gear on the second airplane was damaged but it made an emergency landing on a dirt airstrip at the Lake Hood Seaplane Base, part of Anchorage's largest airport, just before 1 pm. Anchorage Fire Department Assistant Chief Erich Scheunemann said he was not sure how many were on board the second airplane but there were no injuries.

13 dead in Indonesia boat capsize

At least 13 people died on Wednesday when a passenger boat, packed with holidaymakers, heading to home to celebrate the end of Ramadan, capsized off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.Several media reports stated the boat was travelling from Makassar, provincial capital of South Sulawesi, to the resort island of Barrang Lompo, some 15kms northwest of the city's coast.At least 22 passengers were rescued and admitted to hospital for treatment. Many people are said to be still missing.The boat reportedly hit a large wave amid bad weather and capsized.Search operations for the missing people are underway.Ferry accidents are common in Indonesia, particularly during Eid when millions of Muslims across the country travel to their hometowns.

Thunderstorm, rain in Uttarakhand from June 13-17: MET

The Meteorological Centre, Dehradun has issued warnings of thunderstorm and rain in the state from June 13-17 on Wednesday.Few places of the state likely to experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorm on Thursday, and many places are likely to experience the same from June 15-17.Heavy rains lashed in Ghansali, near New Tehri, Uttarakhand.The rain has blocked the motorway and caused severe water logging in several parts of Chamiyala village.Earlier this month, the Badrinath National Highway was closed at two places due to minor landslides, followed by heavy rains in parts of Uttarakhand.

Cabinet approves Dam Safety Bill

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal for introduction of Dam Safety Bill, 2018 in the Parliament to adopt uniform safety procedures to ensure safety of reservoirs.This proposal will help all the States and Union Territories (UT) of India to adopt uniform dam safety procedures, which shall ensure safety of dams and safeguard benefits from such dams. This shall also help in safeguarding human life, livestock and property.The draft Bill has been finalised after wide consultation with leading Indian experts and international experts.The Bill provides for proper surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of all specified dams in the country to ensure their safe functioning. It also provides for constitution of a National Committee on Dam Safety which shall evolve dam safety policies and recommend necessary regulations as may be required for the purpose.The Bill provides for establishment of National Dam Safety Authority as a regulatory body which shall discharge ...

Two more die in related incidents; Toll goes up to 23

Incessant rains lashing several parts of Kerala claimed two more lives today, taking the toll in rain related incidents to 23, since the o nset of the south west monsoon last month, officials said today. Two men-- a 82-year old and a 20-year old -- drowned in flooded rivers in Pathanamthitta today. A total of 272 houses were partially damaged, while eight were fully damaged across Kerala in the rains,officials at the State Control room for Diaster management here said. Land slips and damage to roads were reported from Idukki, Waynad, Kozhikode districts. Officials have asked people to avoid travel during night in the hilly areas of Idukki district. The Bharathapuzha, one of the major rivers in the state, was in spate, as also the Bhavni and Siruvani in Palakkad district, the officials said. Northeast reels under floods, thousands rendered homeless

Incessant rain in the past 24 hours has wreaked havoc in parts of the northeast, triggering flash floods and rendering thousands of people homeless in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, officials said today. In Assam, as many as 1,48,912 people have been affected in 222 villages under eight revenue circles in the districts of Biswanath, Karbi Anglong West and Karbi Anglong East, Golaghat, Karimganj and Hailakandi, according the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report issued today. Karimganj in the Barak Valley remained the worst-hit with the breaching of the Longai river at Nayadhar area. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has so far evacuated 124 people in the district. The authorites have opened 71 relief camps with Karimganj having the highest of 54, followed by Hailakandi 16 and Golaghat one. Building housing Deepika Padukone's residencem catches fire

A portion of a multi-storey building, housing the residence and office of bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, was gutted in a fire here today, officials said. Deepika was not inside the 33-storey Beaumonde building in Prabhadevi area where the blaze emanated from the top floor, according to fire department officials and sources close to the actress. Deepika has residence in one floor of the building and office in another but both were unaffected by the fire, said the sources close to her. Over 90 people, including Deepika's staff members, were safely evacuated from the building, the officials said. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while dousing the blaze, the officials said. The fire was reported at 2.08 pm and it later spread to the 32nd floor, the fire department officials said, adding it was doused after nearly five hours. Private bus overturns in UP's Mainpuri; 17 killed, 25 injured

At least 17 passengers, including a woman, were killed and 25 others injured when a private bus overturned after hitting a road divider early today in Kallu Ki Madhaiya village in the Dannahar area of this district. The bus, carrying 60-70 people, was coming from Jaipur in Rajasthan and heading towards Farrukhabad. The accident happened near Tirathpur village at around 5.30 am, Mainpuri Superintendent of Police Ajay Shankar Rai told PTI over the phone. Sixteen people, including a woman, died on the spot while another person succumbed to injuries at a Saifai hospital, Rai said. Mostly labourers, returning to their native villages in Uttar Pradesh from Rajasthan, were travelling on the bus, he said. Nepal health centre hit by 2015 quake rebuilt, dedicated to people

A health care centre hit by the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and re-built at a cost of USD 1.8 million in American aid was today dedicated to the people of Sindhupalchowk district. US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz and Nepal's Minister for Health and Population Upendra Yadav jointly handed over the newly-reconstructed Barhabise Primary Health Care Centre (BPHCC) in Sindhupalchowk, 100 km east of Kathmandu, to the authority concerned. This is the first health facility that has been rebuilt with US Agency for International Development (USAID) funds following the 2015 earthquakes, according to a press release issued by the US Embassy here. The 15-bedded health centre will provide primary health care services to a remote population of 112,000, including vulnerable infants and mothers suffering from high-risk pregnancies, it said. The Himalayan nation was hit by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 that left nearly, 9,000 people dead and as many as 22,000 injured.

3 pilgrims killed, 10 injured in mishap

: Three pilgrims were killed and 10 injured in a bus-lorry collision on the National Highway near Bhogapuram village in Vizianagaram district today, police said. The bus, carrying over 30 pilgrims back home after a trip to Varanasi, was hit by a speeding lorry, killing the three passengers on the spot, they said. Vizianagaram district Superintendent of Police Pala Raju said the impact of the collision was such that the passengers were trapped inside the mangled bus. "In all 10 passengers were injured,of them five seriously, but all are safe. Some of the injured have been shifted to the King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam for treatment, while others were admitted to the government hospital in Vizianagaram," he said. The ship "MV Nalini" caught fire while being anchored at 14.5 nautical miles south west off Kochi and has lost power and propulsion, prompting it to send out a request for evacuation of its crew members. A defence spokesperson here, quoting a message received from the ship with 22 crew members onboard, said one man has suffered 80 per cent burns. The Southern Naval command here has dispatched an advanced light helicopter while a Sea King copter was being prepared for launch later in case more crew members were to be evacuated, he said. Besides, the Coast Guard and the Cochin Port Trust had sent a 'Charlie' boat and a tug respectively in response to the evacuation request, the spokesperson said.
