Delhi Assembly: 2 BJP MLAs marshalled out

Two BJP MLAs were today marshalled out of the Delhi Assembly as they trooped into the Well of the House, demanding a discussion on the "water crises" here and the Jan Lokpal Bill. One of their colleagues also staged a walkout on the issues. BJP legislators -- Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Jagdish Pradhan -- entered the Well after their adjournment motion on the water crises was declined, as the House's proceedings of the special session concluded today. The members of the opposition did not go back to their seats, despite Speaker Ram Niwas Goel warning. The speaker then directed that Gupta and Sirsa be marshalled out of the House. Later, Pradhan, an MLA from Vishwas Nagar, staged a walkout from the House. According to Gupta, opposition members were marshalled out for raising the issues of "water crises", the alleged corruption and "inefficiency" in the DJB, and the issue of the Jan Lokpal Bill.

Now, check MRP on railway app before ordering food

Worried about overcharging by railway caterers? Passengers can now check the maximum retail price (MRP) of food items on IRCTC's newly-launched "Menu on Rail" application and be sure that they are not taken for a ride. The application was today launched by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal as the Modi government completes four years in office. 'Menu on Rail' will display menu to passengers travelling in Mail/Express, including Humsafar Train, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Gatiman Express and Tejas Express, the railways said in a statement. The food items are covered in four categories namely, beverages, breakfast, meals and a-la-carte. The rates (inclusive of taxes) for standard food items are given for trains as well as stations (excluding food plazas and fast food units), it said. A-la-carte includes a list of 96 items under the categories of breakfast, light meals, combo meals, non-vegetarian, Jain food, sweets, diabetic foods etc. The app will also display pre-booked food items for EC .

49 injured in lightning strikes

At least 49 people were injured when lightning struck them at a tea garden in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district today, officials said. The workers of the Palashbari Tea garden under Dhupguri block of the district were plucking tea leaves when lightning struck them, they said. Superintendent of Banarhat Hospital, Chanchal Rakshit said 49 people injured in lightning strike were rushed to the hospital. Five of the seriously injured were referred to Bannarhat state general hospital while 15 others were discharged after first-aid, he said.

Kochi: 3 killed after school van falls in pond

Two students and a caretaker were killed after a school van they were travelling in fell into a pond in Kerala's Kochi city on Monday.Reportedly, the driver lost control over his speeding vehicle which led to the accident.The driver of the van and other students, who got injured in this accident, are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.A police investigation is currently underway.More details are awaited.

Six die of asphyxiation in Azamgarh village

Six people, including two minors, were asphyxiated to death after getting trapped in a burning thatched house in a village in Azamgarh district, police said. Preparations for a feast were underway at the residence of Mahendra Kumar in Chak Bengali village when a fire broke out due to a leakage in the LPG cylinder, the police said. All the others ran to safety, while four women with two children ran inside a thatched house to escape the flames, they added. Later, the thatched house also caught fire and the women and children trapped inside died of suffocation, the police said. The deceased were identified as Kavita (50), Ramtaji (40), Tara Devi (50), Anita Devi (35), Anjali (4) and Aradhana (1). One person sustained serious burns in the fire and has been referred to Varanasi for treatment, the police said.

Ten slightly injured as fire breaks out at Frankfurt airport

Ten people were slightly injured today when a fire broke out on a vehicle towing a Lufthansa plane at Frankfurt airport, the airline said. The tow vehicle was steering the plane towards a departure gate to pick up passengers bound for the United States when it went up in flames for reasons unknown, a spokesman for the German airline said. The fire spread from the truck to the plane, with photographs showing a massive column of black smoke. The plane was empty but "ten people are being treated with respiratory irritations". The plane was so severely damaged by the flames that it has been grounded. The incident did not disrupt traffic at Frankfurt airport, Germany's busiest hub.

Three killed as van falls in pond in Kerala

Two kids and a helper of a day care centre were killed and two injured after the van carrying them fell off a road into a pond in Maradu near here today, police said. The accident occurred in Kattithara on a narrow road in Maradu municipality near Kochi, they said. The van carrying at least three children less than five-year-old and a driver and the helper, plunged into the pond after skidding off the road this evening. The accident site is about one-and-a-half kilometre away from the private day care centre from where they board the van to reach their home, they added. While two kids and the helper died as they were taken to the hospital, the driver and another child have been admitted to a nearby hospital with injuries, police said. While the condition of the driver is said to be serious, the condition of the kid is said to be out of danger. 104 rain-related deaths in Karnataka since April

As many as 104 rain-related deaths have been reported in Karnataka since April, Revenue Minister R V Deshpande said today, as he directed officials to take up relief works in affected areas on a war footing. Reviewing the situation with officers after assuming office following the recent cabinet expansion of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government, he said there was no shortage of funds. "There have been 104 rain-related deaths reported so far, of which 94 were due to lightning, 10 due to drowning and tree or wall collapse. We have issued directions for providing compensation to almost all of those affected immediately," Deshpande said. Speaking to reporters, he said immediate payment would be made in case of damage to property, life and livestock. He said according to Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) norms, Rs four lakh was given as relief in the case of loss of human lives, and the chief minister had declared an additional Rs one lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. 24 injured in gas pipeline blast in China

A gas pipeline operated by a state-backed energy giant in southwest China's Guizhou province exploded, injuring at least 24 people, officials said today. Gas leaked from a section of the gas pipeline operated by State-controlled PetroChina in Shazi town of Qinglong county and then caused an explosion and fire about yesterday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. No deaths have been reported. The pipeline was automatically shut down after the explosion and the fire was put out at 2:30 AM (local time) today. Of the 24 hospitalised, eight were in critical condition, but the injuries were not life threatening, the report said. The cause of the accident is under investigation, the report said, adding the search and rescue is continuing. In July last year, a similar blast caused by heavy rains and a landslide near the same section of pipeline in Shazi killed eight and injured 35.

Netaji's remains should be brought back home: daughter Anita Bose-Pfaff

Freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's remains should be brought back to India from Japan so as to give a closure to the matter, his daughter Anita Bose Pfaff has said. She was speaking here at the launch of a book "Laid to Rest" by journalist Ashis Ray which collates the findings of 11 different investigations and concludes that he died on August 18, 1945 in a plane crash in Taipei. Many have refused to believe that Bose died in the plane crash. Ray's book lays out his investigations into the incident. Bose-Pfaff said she understood why so many people - both relatives and admirers - had been reluctant to accept this tragic account of events, pointing out that the difficulties in communicating internationally at the time meant nobody could be immediately certain of the facts. At least 12 people were killed and 31 wounded when a suicide attacker blew himself up outside a government ministry in Kabul today, officials said, as employees were leaving their offices early for Ramadan. Six persons killed as bus, 2 trucks collide in MP's Ujjain

Six persons were today killed when two trucks and a bus collided with each other in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district, a senior police official said. Fifteen persons travelling in the bus were also injured, he added. The incident took place in the morning today near Meen Phate on Jaora-Nagda road. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jagdish Dabar said the mishap happened when a private bus was trying to overtake a truck and both vehicles collided with another truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact of the collision was such that one of the trucks overturned and the driver's cabin of the bus and a truck caught fire, he added. The ASP said that four of the six deceased have been identified and efforts were on ascertain the details of the other two. The bus was coming from Mandsaur and was headed to Indore, Dabar said. He said that 15 others travelling in the bus were injured and had been admitted to hospitals in Ratlam, Khachrod and Nagda towns.
