L&T Group's Nabha Power shuts 700 MW unit due to coal shortage

L&T Group firm Nabha Power Ltd (NPL) today said it has been forced to shut a 700 MW unit of Rajpura thermal power station due to shortage of coal. NPL, which has been supplying power to Punjab from Rajpura plant since 2014, shut down unit-2 of 700 MW on June 3, 2018 due to acute shortage of coal, a company statement said. Earlier, unit-1 of 700 MW was shut from April 4-13 this year due to shortage of the dry fuel. The plant has two units of 700 MW each. According to the statement, the present crisis was triggered by disruption in the supply of coal rakes to the plant. Against a daily requirement of 4 rakes of domestic coal, NPL has been receiving only 1-2 rakes per day in recent times. NPL has been facing coal crisis since last year forcing it to operate the plant at critical levels of coal stocks i.e. less than 7 days. 10 killed in Kenyan plane crash: official NAIROBI

All 10 passengers of a small plane, whose wreckage was discovered in central Kenya two days after it went missing, died in the accident, the airline and government said today. "Unfortunately, from the reports we are getting there are no survivors. The families of the passengers and the crew have been notified and as a ministry, we truly regret this very sad outcome and send out our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families," said Paul Maringa, principal secretary of the transport ministry. 3 killed in road accident in Nepal

At least three persons were killed and five others injured in a road accident in western Nepal's Bajhang district, police said. The accident occurred yesterday when the vehicle plummeted 100 metres down a hilly road in Pathibhara Rural Municipality of Western Nepal. Five others who sustained injuries in the incident have been admitted to a district hospital. Nepal has many mountainous areas and most roads are narrow. Most accidents in Nepal are blamed on poorly maintained vehicles and road conditions.

LPG tanker ship hits fishing boat off Kochi, 2 fishermen

Two fishermen were injured when an Indian LPG tanker ship allegedly hit their fishing boat off Kochi coast early today, police said. The incident occurred at around 4 am while the fishermen from Munambam area were engaged in fishing some 18 Nautical Miles off Kochi coast, they said. The injured fishermen have been admitted to a hospital in Paravoor near here, they said adding none of them were serious. There were 10 fishermen on board the boat involved in the accident, police said. All others have been brought to safety, they added. The vessel has been identified as an Indian LPG tanker, which left the scene soon after the incident. However, it was later identified with the help of the Coast Guard, police said. Earlier reports quoting the fishermen said that their boat was hit by a foreign vessel. Fire breaks out in Noida school

Ministry of Water Resources accepts two major irrigation and four flood management projects from six states

The Kaleshwaram Project of Telangana with an estimated cost of Rs. 80190.46 Crores involves diversion of 195 TMC (5522 Million Cubic Meter) of Godavari water to irrigate about 18.25 lakh acres of land in 13 districts (out of total 31 districts) of Telangana. Further, this project will stabilize about 18.82 lakh acres of land under different projects of the state. In addition to this, the project will provide 40 TMC (1133 MCM) of drinking water to Hyderabad, Secundarabad and villages enroute and 16 TMC (453 MCM) of industrial water.

Mumbai Rains: BMC cancels officers' weekly offs

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Thursday, cancelled the weekly Saturday and Sunday offs for its officers after heavy rain warnings were issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).Heavy rains lashed the city today, leaving several vicinities waterlogged, including the Hindmata area near Dadar. Wreckage of missing plane carrying 10 found in Kenya

The wreckage of a small plane was found in central Kenya today, two days after it went missing in bad weather with 10 people on board, the transport minister said. A surveillance helicopter spotted the plane belonging to the FlySAX airline near the town of Njabini on the edge of the Aberdares mountain range. "The ground search will intensify in the next hour despite poor weather conditions that are posing a challenge," said Paul Maringa, principal secretary of the transport ministry. BMC gears up to tackle 'heavy rainfall' in Mumbai this weekend

With the IMD predicting "heavy to very heavy" rainfall along the Maharashtra coast, including Mumbai, over this weekend, the Mumbai civic body is preparing itself to prevent and tackle monsoon-related disasters. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has taken a number of precautionary measures to tackle any eventuality in view of extremely heavy rainfall warning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) from June 9 to 11, a statement issued by the civic body said. "Leaves of all the senior officials, including Deputy Municipal commissioners (DMCs), Assistant Commissioners (AMCs) and heads of departments have been cancelled and they have been directed to be available in their headquarters on June 9 and 10 (Saturday and Sunday)," it said. Ship hits fishing boat off Kochi, two fishermen injured

Two fishermen were injured when a foreign vessel allegedly hit their fishing boat off Kochi coast early today, police said. The incident occurred at around 4 am while the boat from Munambam area was engaged in fishing off Kochi coast, police said. The injured fishermen have been admitted to a hospital in Paravoor near here, they said. The ship left the scene soon after the incident. Fishermen have alleged that their boat was hit by a foreign vessel, police said adding the Navy and Coast Guard have been informed about the incident. 10 dead, 12 injured as mini-bus hits stationary truck in Maharashtra

Ten people were killed and 12 injured when the mini-bus they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck at Sogras Phata on Mumbai-Agra national highway near here early today, police said. The mishap occurred around 5.30 am near Chandwad, which is about 75 km from Nashik, police said. "Ten people were killed and 12 others injured when the mini-bus carrying them rammed into a stationary truck," an official of Chandwad Police Station said. A tyre of the sand-laden truck had got punctured and it was parked by the road when the accident occurred, the official said, adding that the injured were admitted to a sub-district hospital, he added. At least 14 persons were killed and over 90 others wounded in an explosion in Baghdad's Sadr City district on Wednesday, according to an official."The latest report said that 14 people were killed and more than 90 others were wounded by the huge explosion of an explosive cache in eastern Baghdad," reported China's state-run news agency Xinhua quoting an anonymous Interior Ministry source, as saying.The explosion occurred when an explosive cache at a house used as a warehouse went off near a Shiite mosque in the Shiite bastion of Sadr City neighborhood in the evening.While, the house was reported to have been absolutely ravaged, another five nearby houses were badly damaged also.An investigation is underway into the blast as to determine if it was an accident or a terror attack.

Death toll from Guatemala volcano eruption rises to 99

At least 99 people were killed in the eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano, which buried several villages on its southern flank, authorities said today. The National Forensic Sciences Agency said in a report that morgues had received the remains of 99 people killed as a result of the eruption. So far only 28 of the dead have been identified, it said. Some 200 people were still missing, amid fears of a new blowup of the 3,763-metre volcano.

At least 16 dead as arms depot blows up in Baghdad

At least 16 people were killed and dozens injured after an arms depot exploded in the Sadr City district of the Iraqi capital today, security and medical sources said. "An arms depot exploded... The security forces have opened an inquiry to determine the cause," Baghdad's security operations command said in a statement. A senior police source told AFP on condition of anonymity that the blast was caused by heavy weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades and shells, belonging to an armed group and stored in a house. He said at least 16 people were killed and some 32 injured in the explosion. Medical sources confirmed the toll and said that women and children were found among the victims. Sources said the blast struck near a Shiite mosque in the district of northeast Baghdad. Witnesses reported heavy material damage to homes and other buildings in the Sadr City district, which is a stronghold of populist Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr.
