Death toll rises to 99 in Guatemala's volcanic eruption

The death toll from a highly active volcano that erupted near Guatemala's capital on Sunday rose to 99.According to the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala (CONRED), nearly 192 people are missing because of Guatemala's Fuego volcanic eruption that occurred on June 4.After another volcano eruption, the seismological, volcanic and meteorological institute, Insivumeh, heightened its warnings, sent rescue workers and forced evacuations, CNN reported.The Fuego Volcano exploded around noon local time on Monday and lava began flowing down in the afternoon.The executive secretary of the CONRED Sergio Garcia Cabanas earlier said that the village of El Rodeo is the most affected and it was practically buried.Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales had declared a national emergency and urged people to stay calm and not wander around the affected areas.

Robbie Williams among guests rushed to safety as huge fire engulfs luxury London hotel

Singer Robbie Williams was among hundreds of guests and hotel workers who were evacuated from the Mandarin Oriental in Hyde Park here when a huge fire broke out in the five-star hotel, but there were no casualties, police said. Williams, 44, was filmed making his way down a fire escape at the luxury hotel along with other guests as a vast plume of smoke billowed from the building. The star was seen heading calmly to street level and giving a thumbs up as flames leapt from the hotel's windows behind him. There were no immediate reports of casualties as 120 firefighters and 20 fire engines tackled the blaze at the newly refurbished hotel. Retired ambulance officer Gary Sanderson told the Evening Standard, "It was very acrid smoke and you can still smell it now 25 minutes later. A massive fire broke out, tearing across the roof of the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge district of the United Kingdom (UK) capital.The incident occurred just days after the hotel announced the completion of a multi-million-dollar renovation project.Over 100 firefighters were sent to control the fire, CNN reported.No causalities were reported and the staff members were safely evacuated from the 12-storey building to Hyde Park.The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Gunmen kill policeman in Pak

Two gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on a parked police vehicle in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta today, killing one policeman and wounding two others. The gunmen with their faces covered opened fire on the police van on the Arbab Karam Khan road in Quetta. One policeman was killed on the spot in the firing incident while two others were injured and rushed to a hospital, a senior police officer said. Quetta is the provincial capital of Balochistan where separatist groups for years have been demanding a greater share of provincial resources.

Fireworks blast kills 5, injures 8 at home near Mexico City

Mexican authorities say five people have been killed and eight injured by an explosion at a home where fireworks were being stored. The blast happened this morning in Tultepec, just north of Mexico City. The Mexico State government said in a statement that the bodies of two men and one woman were found on a patio at the home. A woman died on the way to the hospital, and another died while being treated at the facility. Four of the injured are children. The explosion also damaged or destroyed 23 neighboring homes plus a dozen cars. Many in Tultepec make a living fabricating and selling homemade fireworks, and explosions there are a semi-regular occurrence. In 2016, a massive chain-reaction blast ripped through an open-air fireworks market, killing several dozen people.

Forecast of heavy rains in Maharashtra from June 7-11

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast "heavy to very heavy" rains in Maharashtra, especially in the coastal Konkan region, from June 7 to 11. As per the forecast, there is a possibility of "very heavy" rainfall in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts tomorrow and on June 8. Also, there is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts on June 9, while there is a similar forecast for the six districts of Konkan region including Mumbai and surrounding areas on June 10 and 11. "As per the forecast of the met department, the state calamity relief cell has sounded a high alert at almost all the places in the state especially in the Konkan region. The state calamity relief cell has instructed district administrations to remain on high alert to face any emergency conditions," a government release stated. 120 firefighters tackle blaze at central London hotel

Fire broke out at London's Mandarin Oriental hotel today, with dozens of firefighters deployed to tackle the blaze that pumped smoke high into the air over the British capital. The fire brigade said "around 120 firefighters" and 20 fire engines were involved in tackling the fire on the roof of the 12-storey hotel in Knightsbridge, a luxury area of central London where Harrods department store is also located. HC orders CB-CID probe into motor accident claim racket

Expressing shock over a "well-oiled racket" operating in the field of motor accident insurance claims, the Madras High Court today ordered a CB-CID probe into the case of three claims made for the death of a same person. Justice P N Prakash ordered that the probe into the case, being handled by the Kancheepuram District crime branch, be handed over to the CB-CID. He gave the directive after going through a status report filed by the CB-CID and local police officials, complying with the court's earlier order. "It shocks the judicial conscience in as much as a well-oiled racket is operating in the field of motor accident claims jurisdiction which needs to be put down with an iron hand," Justice Prakash said. The judge, however, said he did not want to reveal anything more from the report as investigation was on. The case was fit to be transferred to the CB-CID to expose the racket and punish those who might be guilty of tampering with the FIR and filing of the three claim petitions, he .

Four killed in separate incidents in Sidhi district

Four persons were killed and as many injured in two separate incidents in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh today, police said. Two persons, including a minor girl, were killed when lightning struck them when they took shelter under a tree during rain, a police official said. The deceased are identified as Pradip Patel (32) and Sunita Singh (16). Three others were injured in the incident, according to the official. In another incident, two persons extracting minerals were killed when a mine caved in at Nadha village, said Majhouli police station in-charge Pavan Singh. The deceased are identified as Surajbhan Sahu (30) and Surendra Sahu (32). A woman was also injured in the mishap and she is undergoing treatment in the district hospital here, he added.

Fire breaks out at house where Hry CM lived before 2014 elections

A fire broke out at a house in Prem Nagar area here today where Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar used to live before the elections in 2014. The building was now being used as a camp office by the BJP workers. The fire caused damage to computers and some furniture items which were kept on the ground floor of the building, the police said. 5 killed in rain-related incidents in Raj, HP; light showers in parts of North

Three persons were killed when their house collapsed during dust storm and rains in Rajasthan and two children died in a lightning-related incident in Himachal Pradesh, as light showers in northern India brought respite from sweltering heat. Light to moderate rains accompanied with thunder storm occurred at isolated places over the western parts of Uttar Pradesh, while the eastern parts of the state remained dry, the Meteorological (MeT) department said. The mercury dipped to 24.1 degrees Celsius in Jammu after light rains lashed the city, bringing respite to the residents. Jammu recorded the season's highest temperature at 33.2 degrees Celsius yesterday. Light rains last evening caused the mercury to dip. Heavy rains occurred in parts of Himachal Pradesh. The MeT office has issued warnings of thunder storm and gusty winds in the lower hills and the mid hills of the state for the next four days. The deceased, who were returning from school, fell unconscious as the lightning struck and some pedestrians noticed them and rushed them to a hospital, where they were declared brought dead, they said. Confirming the incident, Tehsildar Chamba Jagdish Chand Sharma told that an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 has been given to the next of kin of each deceased. First tropical storm of east Pacific hurricane season forms off Mexico

The first named tropical storm of the east Pacific hurricane season formed today off the coast of Mexico, but posed no immediate threat to coastal communities, meteorologists said. Dubbed Aletta, the storm is expected to build to hurricane strength early tomorrow, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. But Mexican authorities have so far not issued any alerts about the storm, which at 2.30pm India Standard Time (IST) was creating maximum winds of 75 kilometres (46 miles) per hour at a distance of 595 kilometres (370 miles) southeast of Manzanillo, a port city in the western Mexican state of Colima. The storm was moving eastwards at a speed of 11 kilometres per hour.

HC dismisses as infructuous Sasan Power's plea to mine excess coal

The Delhi High Court today termed as infructuous a plea by Sasan Power Ltd, a Reliance Power subsidiary, seeking permission to extract excess coal from two mines in Madhya Pradesh, saying that the Centre was already examining the issue. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and C Hari Shankar also noted that an inter ministerial committee had severely criticised the mining being conducted by Sasan Power Ltd (SPL) holding that there was high moisture content in the coal due to water not being properly pumped out. It also said that SPL was asked to improve the quality of mining. The committee, led by the chairman, Central Electricity Authority, was formed to examine the issue of requirement of coal for Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (Sasan UMPP)and give its recommendation. Blast at French grain silo injures at least 4; cause unclear

An explosion today at a grain silo in the eastern French city of Strasbourg injured at least four people and prompted a large firefighting operation. Three victims were taken by helicopter to regional hospitals and one victim with lesser injuries was treated in a nearby hospital, according to a statement by the regional administration, or prefecture. Six other people affected by the explosion were treated at the scene by a medical-psychological unit, the statement said, without elaborating on whether they were physically hurt or in shock.
