Two people were killed at an abandoned mine in a northeastern region of Morocco that has been hit by social unrest sparked by similar accidents, authorities said. The accident happened when a shaft collapsed on the pair in the Sidi Boubker commune of Jerada province yesterday as they tried to mine lead. "Two people, aged around 33 and 42, died on Sunday following the partial collapse of a lead gallery in Sidi Boubker," the local authorities said, quoted by Moroccan news outlets. The acute water shortage situation in Shimla improved as authorities increased supply for the second day today, even though officials said the rationing system put in place in the Himachal Pradesh capital would continue. Shimla residents have been facing severe water shortage for more than two weeks now. Authorities have put in place a rationing system under which the hill city has been divided into three zones and each zone receives water alternatively - after two days. Yesterday, the volume of water supply was increased by 7 million litres per day to 28 MLD. Today, supply was further increased to 37 MLD after the Shimla Municipal Corporation plugged leakages and snapped illegal connections, officials said. SMC sources said the schedule for supplying water to the three zones would be modified if more water was available. Shimla normally requires 40-45 MLD of water during summers. The car of Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor today crashed into a tree and fell on the roof of a building after the driver lost control over the vehicle, police said. The mayor was not in the vehicle, they said, adding that an employee of the SMC and the driver of the car were injured in the accident. The vehicle of Mayor Kusum Sardet, who returned from China yesterday, was on surveillance duty to check the water supply when the accident took place, they said. There were three people in the vehicle and one of them escaped unhurt. Two sanitation workers and a policeman, who went inside a manhole to rescue them, died due asphyxiation while they were cleaning the sewage on the premises of police lines here, a police official said. One more sanitation worker was critically injured in the incident, he said. The incident occurred this evening when two workers Ravi Kumar and Krishan Kumar, who were cleaning the manhole, fell unconscious, he said. The third worker, Balvir, went inside the manhole to save them but he too did not come out. When constable Lachhman noticed that the three sanitation workers had failed to come out, he also jumped inside the manhole to rescue them but lost his life, the official said. Later, the incident was reported to senior officials and all the four people were rescued with help of fire brigade staff, he said. They were rushed to the civil hospital, where three of them were declared brought dead by doctors, he added.

A judicial magistrate and a lawyer were killed when their car overturned in Danaura village near Naraingarh today, the police said. The third occupant of the car, Rajeev Singh, who is also a lawyer, sustained serious injuries and was referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh, they said. Sahil Yadav (32) was posted as Judicial Magistrate First Class in a court at Naraingarh, close to Ambala. After the accident, he was also rushed to PGIMER at Chandigarh, but succumbed to his injuries, the police said. Rajan Gupta (42), a former president of Naraingarh Bar Association, also died in the accident, they said. According to the police, the lawyers and the judicial magistrate were coming to Naraingarh from Chandigarh in the morning when the car overturned after hitting tree as the driver was trying to avert a collision with another vehicle, which was said to be overspeeding.

In a swift operation, the Indian Navy today rescued 38 Indians from Socotra island in Yemen where they were stranded for nearly 10 days after a severe cyclonic storm hit the area. The Navy yesterday had diverted its ship INS Sunayna from the Gulf of Aden to Socotra as part of the operation 'NISTAR' to rescue the Indians, Navy spokesperson Captain D K Sharma said. He said the stranded Indians were rescued off the coast of Socotra early this morning and are now onboard INS Sunayna, adding all of them were safe. The ship is bringing the Indians back home. "The operation, code-named 'NISTAR', was carried out on the morning of June 3 off the coast of Socotra. The evacuated Indians were embarked on board and immediately provided with medical care, food, water and telephone facilities to call and reassure their families at home," Sharma said.
