Central Rly ropes in Amitabh Bachchan for safety campaign

Film megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been roped in by Central Railway to appeal to passengers to follow railway safety rules, a senior official said today. "He shot sequences for a short film asking passengers to follow safety rules, to not cross tracks and to use foot overbridges," said D K Sharma, general manager, CR. "In the short film, the film legend tells passengers not to cross tracks as someone is waiting for them at home," said Sharma. He informed that a few short films, featuring actor Naseeruddin Shah and directors Sisir Mishra and Nishikant Kamat, have already been screened on social media platforms. Sharma also said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today chaired a meeting in which the Railways as well as other agencies discussed their monsoon preparedness. 3 children killed as tree uprooted by storm falls on hut

Three children were killed and another was injured after a tree uprooted by a storm fell over their hut in the Mori area of Uttarkashi district today, a government official said. The tree fell on the hut inBhankwad village around 6 pm today killing the three children who were inside it -- aged five, three and one year -- on the spot, and leaving another badly injured, SDM Purola Puran Singh Rana said. The seven-year-old child who received serious injuries in the incident has been rushed to a hospital, the official said. A team of state disaster response force, police and forest department has been rushed to the spot, the SDM said on his way to the village.

Fire at Saket, several vehicles in police auto pond damaged

Several vehicles were gutted in a fire that broke out at an auto pond of the police in the Saket area this evening, an official said. A call regarding the fire was received at Saket police station at 5.16 PM, said DCP (south) Romil Baaniya. "On reaching the spot it was found that the fire broke out at an auto pond in Sector 5 of Pushp Vihar," the officer said. The auto pond houses case property of the police's south district, Baaniya said. "It was found that many vehicles have caught fire," he said. Eight fire tenders, and personnel from Delhi Police Civil Defence and disaster management controlled the fire. No casualties have been reported however a lot of vehicles were damaged in the fire, said the officer. Necessary legal action will be initiated in this regard, he added.

Ahmedabad-Kochi flight lands at Vadodara airport on medical

A Kochi-bound flight from Ahmedanad with 150 passengers was diverted to the Vadodara airport today due to a medical emergency on board. The flight made an emergency landing and the sick passenger, who had suffered a cardiac arrest, was immediately rushed to the state government-run Sir Sayajirao general hospital. However, the passenger was declared brought dead, an airport official said. "The 38-year-old passenger had complained of uneasiness in chest following which the plane was diverted to Vadodra airport where it made an emergency landing," the official said. Airport authorities had made all the arrangements including a '108 ambulance' for rushing the passenger to the hospital and provide him medical assistance at the earliest on landing of the aircraft, the official added. Panic due to fire at Malviya Nagar, no casualty reported

A major fire broke out in a rubber godown in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area today causing panic among locals. No casualty was reported in the incident, an official said. A dense plume of smoke billowed from a burning truck and the godown in Khirki Extension area causing panic among locals. Then police evacuated the area to ensure safety of the people living near the godown. The call of the fire was received around 5 PM and 35 fire tenders were rushed to the factory to bring the blaze under control, said a Delhi Fire Services officer. The fire started from a truck parked near Sant Nirankari School in Malviya Nagar. The truck was loaded with rubber sheet from a godown, police said. PM tells officials to ensure assistance to rain-affected areas in K'taka

Amid heavy downpour in parts of Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke to officials and directed them to ensure all possible assistance in the affected areas. Heavy downpour lashed the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi for the third day today, inundating low-lying areas and flooding roads, disrupting traffic and throwing life out of gear. "I pray for the safety and wellbeing of all those affected by heavy rains in various parts of Karnataka. Have spoken to officials and asked them to ensure all possible assistance in the affected areas," Modi said in a tweet. Swedish golfer breaks first trophy won in US at airport

Did she have a problem with her grip? Swedish golfer Jenny Haglund, who turned pro in 2016, broke her first trophy won in the US in an airport accident, she told Swedish Radio on Tuesday. "I had the glass trophy in my hand luggage but I knocked it over accidentally at the security control at the airport," the 24-year-old said. "It wasn't a big fall, but it still broke. They said it was considered a weapon and confiscated it," she said. Swedish Radio published a photo of the splintered trophy, which Haglund won in mid-May in North Carolina at the Symetra Classic. Organisers have promised to send her a new trophy.

Rain fury in coastal districts throws life out of gear

Heavy downpour lashed the twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi for the third day today, inundating low-lying areas and flooding roads, disrupting traffic and throwing life out of gear. The Home Ministry said it has reviewed the situation in Managalore and is rushing additional teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) to to assist the local administration in handling rescue and relief operations. A holiday had been declared for educational institutions in DK and Udupi today and tomorrow by Deputy Commissioners of both districts. Mumbai commercial complex fire: Death toll rises to five

The body of a man, missing since Sunday's fire in a commercial complex in suburban Goregaon, was found today, police said. With this, the death toll in the fire that swept through the seventh and eighth floors of the Technic Plus One building in Goregaon on Sunday evening rose to five, an official added. He said the body of the victim, identified as Abdul Rakib (23), was found inside an electric panel on the seventh floor of the building. It seems that Rakib, in order to save himself, had gone into the panel and closed it from inside, the official added. At the time of the fire, Pratham Enterprises was removing a private telecom firm's assets on the seventh and eighth floors as part of a High Court order. 7 killed, 5 injured in lightning strike, thunderstorm in Jharkhand

Thunderstorm and lightning claimed seven lives and injured five people in Lohardaga, Pakur and Chatra districts of Jharkhand since Sunday, police said today. A 65-year-old woman and her grand daughter were killed this evening in Lohardaga district when lightning struck them at Tati village, they said. The woman and her grand daughter were in their vegetable field when thunderbolt struck them, killing the woman on the spot and her grand daughter succumbed to her injuries while being rushed to a nearby health centre. Hurricane Maria, which pummeled Puerto Rico in September 2017, is likely responsible for the deaths of more than 4,600 people, some 70 times higher than official estimates, US researchers said today. The government-provided death toll stands at just 64, but experts say an accurate count was complicated by the power outages and widespread devastation wreaked by the storm, which caused $90 billion in damages and is ranked as the third costliest cyclone in the United States since 1900. Delhi Police chief launches 'Street Safe' campaign of Ola

Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik today launched a 'Street Safe' campaign of cab aggregator Ola, and said such initiatives should be emulated by other companies. It is a unique initiative with regard to women safety and other cab aggregators should also adopt it, he said. Fire at CST rail yard under control

A fire that broke out in a train coach at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway yard, Mumbai has been doused off.No injuries or casualties have been reported in the incident.Meanwhile, a high-level enquiry committee of railway officials has been formed to investigate the incident."Fire has been doused off. Only one coach was damaged at the washing site of the CST yard. Officials are present at the site and an inquiry has been initiated. Spare train coach parked at CSMT yard catches fire, none hurt

A spare coach of an express train parked at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway yard here caught fire this afternoon, an official said. Nobody was injured in the fire that broke out at 2.50 pm, the official said. Following the blaze, the power supply of overhead wires was disconnected as a precautionary measure and the fire brigade was called in, Sunil Udasi, chief spokesperson of the Central Railway, said. "Before the fire brigade team arrived, coaches positioned next to the affected one, were shunted out and the adjoining rakes on the nearby line were also moved out," he said. The alert staff of the division used water from the coaching depot and fire extinguishers installed in other coaches, to douse the flames, he added. Couple, their two daughters killed in accident

Four members of a family were killed while three injured when their car hit a tree on Sirhind-Patiala road near Rurki village today, the police said. The victims were returning to Ludhiana after attending a 'Jagran' near Kaithal in Haryana, when the driver lost control over the vehicle near Rurki village and it hit a roadside tree, they said. Sunil, his wife Sonia and their two daughters -- six year-old Diya and seven-month-old Mansi were killed, while three others were injured in the accident, the police said. The injured were taken to Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib, from where they were referred to a government hospital in Chandigarh.
