Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has agreed to consider the demand of the Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI) to allow private security personnel to travel free in public buses in the city, the association said. A delegation of CAPSI met the chief minister last week along with AAP legislator Somnath Bharti. "The chief minister agreed to consider this demand. The association offered services of security guards to keep watch in buses and boost safety of women and children," Bharti said. Come April 2019 and all bottles containing alcoholic beverages will carry warning asking people not to drink and drive, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has said. The move comes following a Public Interest Litigation filed by social activist Prince Singhal. Citing Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages Standards) Regulations, 2018, the FSSAI in a recent order said the warning "Consumption of alcohol is injurious to health. Be safe - Don't drink and drive" can be printed on the labels of alcoholic beverages -- both Indian Made Foreign Liquors (IMFL) and the imported ones. This warning can also be printed in the local or regional language, if any state desires to do so, it said. "In such cases, there would be no requirement of also printing this warning in English," the FSSAI said. A six-year-old girl died and six others were injured when they were thrown to the ground after a bolt holding a passenger car of a giant wheel snapped leading to a collision with another car, police said today. The incident occurred at a local exhibition here last night. There were seven girls in the two cars, they said. Anantapuramu deputy superintendent of police Venkata Rao said while one died, the other six girls suffered minor injuries. They have been admitted to a private hospital, he said. Nearly 40 passengers travelling in a low-floor bus had a narrow escape today after the vehicle caught fire apparently due to excessive heat, an officer said. The rear-engine low-floor bus caught fire near Durgapura area of the city, fire officer Devang Kumar said. The passengers were safely evacuated just in time after driver reportedly noticed flames in the engine, he said. Two fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames, he added.
The Delhi High Court today sought the DMRC's response to a PIL seeking in-depth inquiry into the safety of rails procured through a Swiss company for metro tracks. The petition, which came up for hearing before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, alleged that the rails supplied by the Swiss company -- East Metal AG -- may have high content of Hydrogen making them more susceptible to breaks or fractures which could lead to a major disaster. Rails are continuous line of steel bars laid on the ground as one of a pair forming a railway track. The court issued notice to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Swiss company, which won the contract for supplying the rails, and sought their response to the plea by October 9, the next date of hearing. The petition by Dhirendra Krishna has urged that the rails should not be used till their procurement and safety is inquired into, as lives of millions of commuters would be at stake.
Two workers have died while one has been hospitalised with burn injuries in a fire which broke out in Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar's mill at Kinauni in Meerut on Saturday, the company said. In a regulatory filing today, Bajaj Hindusthan informed that the fire broke out in one of the storage tanks at its distillery division during loading of ethanol in containers. The incident took place in the afternoon on May 26 and the fire could be fully extinguished in the evening next day with help of state fire department along with the army. "The fire has caused serious burn injuries to three workmen at the distillery site. All the three injured workmen were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Two of the injured workmen succumbed to burn injuries and other one is being treated at the hospital," the company said, adding that the company would provide necessary support to families of these workmen. A car rammed into a stationary truck in Shahpura town of Jaipur, killing two people and injuring two others, police said. The accident occurred near Khatolai bridge on the Jaipur-Delhi National Highway. The deceased were identified as Shashank (29) and Moolchand Chauhan (25), SHO of Shahpura police station Virendra Singh Rathore said. He said that bodies were sent for postmortem.
Eight members of a family, including four women, were killed after being trapped inside their burning house in Pakistan's largest city today. Police officials said the eldest son of Gulzara Bibi, who had survived the blaze in Baldia Town area, told them his mother was mentally unstable and set a room on fire after locking the house from inside. "The mother, her three daughters and four sons were in one room where Gulzara Bibi allegedly first set fire," one official said. Neighbours of the family which resided in Malang Goth, a low income area in Baldia town, said Bibi was mentally unstable. A rescue official said Bibi and her three daughters were killed in the fire in the blazing house while three of the sons died while being taken to hospital for treatment. One son expired in hospital while two other people were injured in the fire, he added. Among the injured was the father who was sleeping in the porch and managed to escape the fire.
The central government has decided to appoint food safety supervisors in all its departmental canteens. The supervisors will be trained by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), mandated to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption, an official statement said. These supervisors will also be keeping an eye on 25 food handlers, it said. As per the FSSAI norms, all departmental canteens, tiffin rooms etc have to be licensed to ensure safe food in central government offices. These licensed canteens should have trained food safety supervisors, whose training should be completed by December 31, 2018, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry to all central government departments said. All the central government organisations have been asked to nominate officers for the first training workshop, scheduled to start from June 16. A 5.7-magnitude earthquake today jolted northeastern China's Jilin Province, causing panic among the residents, state-run media reported. The quake that struck the Songyuan City in Jilin Province at 1:50 AM (local time) was 5.7 magnitude and 13 kilometers deep, Xinhua news agency reported. No casualties and damage have been reported so far. However, residents in the city said they felt strong tremors and many people rushed out to the streets after the earthquake happened, it added. The area's power supply was unaffected, but some mobile phone communications were disrupted., the report said, adding that an emergency response mechanism has been launched.

Three people were killed when lightning struck them at a village near here, the police said today. The victims, Chandra Singh (30), Narendra Singh (19) and Bujram Singh (35), had taken refugee in a hut following rains and inclement weather when the thunderbolt hit them last evening, Karan Pathar police station in-charge Arvind Sahu said. The victims had taken their cattle for grazing the forest area when the incident occurred, he added.
A woman was killed and three other people injured today as a car driven by a 90-year-old driver ploughed into pedestrians in eastern Japan, officials said. The car mounted the kerb near a busy crossroads in Chigasaki city, southwest of the capital Tokyo, hitting four pedestrians, a local police spokesman said. "One female victim was later confirmed dead and three others -- two women and one man -- were injured," he added. The spokesman confirmed the female driver was 90 years old. Police were still investigating the cause of the accident. Local media said the driver was also slightly injured. The Royal Oman Police announced the death of two additional Omanis who lost control of their car in flood waters in Salalah, Oman's third-largest city, which was directly hit by Cyclone Mekunu over the weekend. Those deaths come after the National Committee for Civil Defense earlier announced that four people had been killed. The cyclone struck mainland Oman and Yemen early Saturday, dumping nearly three years' worth of rain on Salalah in 24 hours. It was the strongest cyclone ever recorded to hit southern Oman. The storm earlier hit Yemen's island of Socotra, causing deaths and widespread damages.
