Telangana: 10 killed in road accident

At least 10 people including two children were killed after a lorry, a state-owned RTC bus and a car collided with each other in Telangana's Siddipet on Saturday evening.Fifteen others also got injured in the collision and were rushed to Jedcharla government hospital for further treatment.According to Additional DCP Narsimha Reddy at around 4 pm a lorry tried to overtake a bus and hits it from right side immediately bus lost control and turned turtle. The lorry after hitting the bus lost control and rammed into a car.A case has been registered in this regard and the investigation is underway.

10 dead, 20 hurt in multiple collision in Telangana

Ten people, including three women and as many children, were killed on the spot and 20 others injuredin a road accident in Siddipet district of Telangana this evening, police said. A government bus went out of control and collided with a lorry and a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) coming in the opposite direction, they said. Under the impact of the collision, seven occupants of the MUV and three passengers on the bus died and 20 others were injured, police said, adding that all of them have been hospitalised. Expressing grief, Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao directed the authorities concerned to ensure good medical care to the injured.

Powerful cyclone strikes Oman, Yemen; 5 dead, 30 missing

A cyclone more powerful than any previously recorded in southern Oman slammed into the Gulf country and neighbouring Yemen today, deluging a major city with nearly three years' worth of rainfall in single day. The storm killed at least five people while more than 30 remain missing, officials said. Cyclone Mekunu caused flash flooding that tore away whole roadways and submerged others in Salalah, Oman's third-largest city, stranding drivers. Strong winds knocked over street lights and tore away roofing. Rushing waters from the rain and storm surges flooded typically dry creek beds. The holiday destination's now-empty tourist beaches were littered with debris and foam from the churning Arabian Sea. Three people, including a 12-year-old girl, died in Oman, and another two bodies were recovered from the Yemeni island of Socotra. 21 killed, 1.5 lakh hit by rains in Sri Lanka

At least 21 people have died and two were missing due to rains and winds in Sri Lanka, as bad weather hit more than 150,000 across the country over a week, the government said today. Most of the deaths were caused by lightning, while nine people had drowned, Disaster Relief Minister Duminda Dissanayake said, putting out the casualty figures. "We have housed over 45,000 people now in temporary relief camps," he said, adding that 21 out of the 25 administrative districts in the country were hit by the bad weather. There was heavy rain fall from May 16 at the onset of the North-Eastern monsoon rains with many places going underwater, as landslide warnings were issued in the hill districts. Spill gates were opened in several reservoirs in the country. The minister said over 100 houses have been completely destroyed in the rains and winds, even as the Army was deployed for rescue and relief operations. 2 killed in Syrian car bombing

At least two people were killed and scores of others wounded on Saturday in a car bombing in north-western Syria.The bombing rocked the center of Syrian city Idlib, causing heavy damage to houses and cars, reported Anadolu Agency, citing, White Helmets director in Idlib Mustafa Haj Youssef, as saying.The White Helmets, which, is officially known as Syria Civil Defence, is a volunteer organisation that operates in parts of rebel-controlled Syria and in Turkey.The wounded have been rushed to the hospitals in the area.No one has claimed the responsibility of the attack by far.

3 killed, 10 injured as jeep collides with truck in Rajasthan

Three people were killed and 10 others injured, including three women and two children, in a head-on collision between a jeep and a truck, police said today. The accident occurred in the morning when the victims were returning to their different villages in Bhiwani district of Haryana in the jeep, they said. The deceased were identified as Chiranji lal (70), Poonam (32) and Mahipal (50), the police said.

Accident on Mumbai-Pune expressway causes massive traffic jam

Traffic on Mumbai-Pune Expressway came to a standstill after six vehicles rammed into each other on Saturday.The collision between vehicles took place near Khalapur toll-plaza after a speeding container truck applied brakes suddenly.One minor got injured and has been taken to the hospital.The vehicular movement has now resumed.

Packaged drinking water firm raided, shut down by Goa FDA

The Food and Drugs Administration in Goa today shut down a factory which was allegedly bottling drinking water in unhygienic conditions, an official said. A raid was conducted by a team of food safety officials of the FDA at Krishna Food and Beverages in Assagao village, about 20 kilometres from here, said Jyoti Sardesai, FDA director. "The unit was found manufacturing packaged drinking water without obtaining a licence under the Food Safety and Standards Act from the Food and Drugs Administration," she said. She added that the operations at the unit were being carried out in an unhygienic manner by non-technical staff. The packaged drinking water was being distributed to various hotels in Mapusa and Calangute areas, the official said. Sardesai said that the firm had been issued a notice under section 31 of the Food Safety and Standards Act and had been asked to stop its activities with immediate effect. 48 killed as Uganda bus rams into tractor and truck

At least 48 people including 16 children died in northern Uganda when a bus hit a tractor driving with no lights at night and then a truck, the Red Cross said today. "Evacuation teams are working tirelessly to rescue the injured", said Ugandan police spokeswoman Emilian Kayima, adding that all three drivers had died. "The death toll is now at 48 including 16 children," Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakasiita told AFP. The accident happened last night in Kiryandongo, about 220 kilometres (140 miles) north of the capital Kampala. The bus collided first with the tractor before hitting a truck transporting beer. Local media said the death toll exceeded 30. Uganda has one of the worst records for road safety, due to the poor condition of vehicles and roads as well as dangerous driving. More than 9,500 people died in a road accident in the country between 2015 and 2017, according to figures from the transport ministry, with the situation worsening each year.

16 killed due to rains, winds in Sri Lanka

Sixteen people have been killed and over one lakh affected due to heavy rains and strong winds in Sri Lanka in a week, even as the Army was deployed for rescue and relief operations. The inclement weather, persisting since May 20, has affected 20 out of the 25 districts of the country, including five districts which are on red alert for possible landslides. "The death toll had reached 16 as of this morning (Saturday) with one person reported missing," the Colombo Gazette reported. Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre said the bad weather has affected more than 130,000 people in 20 districts so far. Flooding and subsequent potential landslides threat has forced the evacuation of people in low-lying areas in parts of the country, it said. Five districts including Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya are on "red alert" for possible landslides, according to the disaster management centre. Meanwhile, the report said over 13,000 families have been evacuated to 231 welfare .

Indian national among 5 killed in Mekunu Cyclone

Five people including an Indian national were killed and at least 40 missing on the Yemeni island of Socotra on Friday as Cyclone Mekunu disrupted the area before passing through Arabian Peninsula's southern coast.As reported by the Daily Star the other four deceased were Yemeni nationals.Among those missing were three local sailors whose ship capsized off the coast of the island.Following the incident, Yemen declared a state of emergency for Socotra, which lies between southern Yemen and the Horn of Africa.The cyclone has led to flooding of Socotra's villages and capsized boats while disrupting all sorts of communication channels.Further, the authorities are expecting the cyclone to pass over the city of Salalah in Oman as they closed down city's airport.A child in Salalah was hospitalised for injuries caused by the severe winds.

Truck falls into gorge in J-K, 1 killed

One person was killed and another critically injured after a truck carrying vegetables skidded off the road and fell into a 200-feet deep gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today, police said. The truck was going to Srinagar from Jammu and on reaching Seri village in Ramban district, its driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell into a 200-feet gorge, a police official said. He said a team was deployed immediately to rescue the victims. The team retrieved the body of a person, believed to be the truck's driver, from the gorge, while another person was found critically injured, the official said. The injured has been hospitalised, he said.

Goods worth over Rs 20 lakh gutted in Punjab warehouse fire

Machinery and goods worth over Rs 20 lakh were gutted in a fire that broke out in the warehouse of a factory in Tibbi here, police said today. The cause of the fire was not yet known, they said. The old machinery, packing material and goods were stored in the warehouse after the factory was shifted to new premises. They said the fire broke out last night and it took around three hours to bring it under control. S P Sethi, chairman of Fine Switchgears, as some material continued to smoulder overnight despite the efforts of the fire brigade, the blaze erupted this morning again. The fire tenders had to be called to douse the flames, Sethi said. The exact amount of loss was yet to be ascertained but the preliminary assessment puts it at over Rs 20 lakh, Sethi said.

Over 12 quintals of mangoes destroyed

Over 12 quintals of mangoes were destroyed after food inspectors detected that chemicals like carbide were used to ripen them in a market here, an official release said. A team of food safety officials from Kamrup Metropolitan district seized 12.5 quintals of mangoes at Fancy Bazar, the largest commercial place of the North East yesterday, the release said. "The fruits were seized by the team. These have been ripened by using chemicals like carbide," it added. "Later, the sellers themselves destroyed the seized fruits with the help of Guwahati Municipal Corporation officials at the spot. The approximate cost of the fruits assessed as Rs 62,000," it said.
