Odisha: 2 dead, 30 injured after bus falls off bridge

Two people were killed and nearly 30 others were injured after a bus fell off a bridge here on Thursday.The incident surfaced earlier this morning, when the bus, travelling from Bhubaneswar to Bhawanipatna on National Highway 26, near Kalahandi area, fell nearly 30-feet below from a bridge while attempting to overtake another bus.As per the police, around 40 to 50 passengers were onboard at the time of the accident. Out of these, one child and the conductor died, while the injured were rushed to medical centers in Cuttack, Berhampur and Burla."A bus named Manikeswari was coming from Bhubaneswar to Bhawanipatna. While attempting to overtake another bus, it fell off a bridge. There were around 40 to 50 passengers, including children and ladies. All are injured. A child and conductor of the bus died, while six persons are seriously injured. We are sending them to Cuttack, Berhampur and Burla for treatment. Russian military helicopter crashes in Baltic Sea, two dead

A Russian military helicopter has crashed during a training night flight over the Baltic Sea, killing two pilots, the Russian army said today. The accident happened close to the Russian region of Kaliningrad, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania, at 23:30 Moscow time last night, the Russian Baltic Fleet said in a statement quoted by the Interfax news agency. "The crew of the Ka-29 helicopter, consisting of two pilots, were killed," the statement said. A search operation has been launched to recover the bodies. The crash comes after a Mi-8 helicopter crashed in a city in far eastern Russia on Wednesday, killing six people. It was operated by the local Vostok airline.

UN launches road safety trust fund

Citing tragic road accidents in India and Canada, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed termed traffic deaths an urgent global concern as the world body launched a trust fund aimed at spurring action to help save lives in road accidents. During the General Assembly debate on road safety here yesterday, Mohammed said traffic accidents are the number one cause of death of young people and are responsible for keeping millions of people in poverty each year. "Road traffic deaths and injuries have become a serious and urgent global concern. Around 1.3 million drivers, passengers and pedestrians die each year, and up to 50 million are injured on the world's roads," she said. "Just in the past week, we have been reminded of the deeply distressing personal realities behind such statistics. Hailakandi administration enforces helmet laws

Wearing of helmets has been made compulsory for two-wheeler riders in Hailakandi district of Assam with immediate effect, in view of increasing road accidents in the district. An order issued by the district administration yesterday made it mandatory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets saying most of the casualties resulting from head injury were due to non-wearing of protective headgears. Punitive action as per law would be initiated against those defying the order, it said. The order also said that the protective headgears worn by the riders should conform to standards. Owners or managers of fuel filling stations were also asked not to sell fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets.

A family of four died after a fire broke out at their house in Delhi's Kohat Enclave on Friday.A married couple and their eight-year-old son and three-year-old daughter lost their lives in the incident.Three others were injured and taken to Ambedkar Hospital.An initial investigation suggested a short circuit to be the cause of the fire.

Massive gas plant resumes operations after severe PNG quake

ExxonMobil's massive gas project has resumed operations in Papua New Guinea after a major earthquake damaged the plant, the US energy giant said today, in a boost for the Pacific nation as it rebuilds after the devastation. More than 125 people were killed and many more injured after the 7.5-magnitude tremor hit the country's mountainous interior on February 26, cutting off villages and knocking out power. The quake also damaged facilities at the USD19 billion PNG LNG project operated by ExxonMobil, the impoverished country's biggest-ever development, in the remote Southern Highlands region. 4 killed as fire breaks out in a building in northwest Delhi

Four members of a family died due to suffocation after a fire broke out in the stilt parking of a four-storeyed building in northwest Delhi's Kohat Enclave, an official from the Delhi Fire Service said. Three others were injured, he added. A call was received at 2.48 am about a fire in the parking area and 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was doused by around 4 am, the official said. The four members of the family, including two children, were sleeping on the first floor and after they saw smoke emanating from downstairs they tried to escape but were suffocated to death, he said.

Indian-American entrepreneur among dead in Arizona plane crash

A young Indian-American entrepreneur was among six people killed in a plane crash in a suburb of Phoenix in Arizona, authorities said today. They identified him as Anand Patel, 26, the founder of What's Happy Clothing. The plane Piper PA-24 Comanche which was headed to Las Vegas crashed Monday night onto a Scottsdale golf course, some 15 minutes after takeoff from the city airport. On hitting the ground, the plane burst into flames, killing all the six passengers on board. The age of all of them ranged from 22 to 28 years. Police recovers vehicle parts, personal belongings of Indian family from river; occupants still missing

An inter-agency search and rescue team in California today recovered parts of a vehicle from a river in which a missing Indian family was travelling last week. Personal belongings of the four members of the Thottapilly family from Santa Clarita in California, who were believed to be travelling through Humboldt and Mendocino County on US-101 while on a vacation, were also found by the team over a two-day period on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sandeep Thottapilly, 41, vice president of the Union Bank on Santa Clarita, and his wife Soumya Thottapilly, 38, were on a road trip along with their two kids -- Siddhanth, 12 and Saachi, nine -- in the maroon Honda Pilot (No Plate California 7MMX138) from Portland, Oregon to San Jose in Southern California, during which they went missing on April 5.
