A Hawk aircraft of Indian Air Force today crashed near the Odisha-Jharkhand border after taking off from Kalaikunda airbase in West Bengal, official sources said. The trainee pilot flying the aircraft ejected safely, they said. The aircraft was on a routine training sortie. A court of inquiry has been ordered into the accident, said the sources. Hawk is an advanced trainer jet.

A powerful tropical storm that lashed the island of Madagascar has left 20 people dead and affected 19,000 more, according to an official toll. The storm also closed several national highways that were flooded by the heavy rain, the country's disaster management office said late Monday. In a previous toll late Sunday it said 17 people had died and 15,000 had been affected. Storm Eliakim slammed into the northeastern Masoala peninsula on Friday before barrelling south down the coast. By Monday it had moved away from the Indian Ocean island and "presents no more danger". Madagascar, one of the world's poorest countries, is frequently hit by cyclones and tropical storms. Cricket icon and Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar has sought action against manufacturers of low-quality helmets, continuing his campaign for safe two-wheeler riding. In a letter to transport minister Nitin Gadkari, Tendulkar said given the high rate of accidents involving two-wheeler drivers, it is important that safety equipment for them is of highest quality. "I am writing to you to request your ministry to consider action against helmet manufacturers using low grade material and selling it with a fake ISI mark. As sportspersons, we understand the importance of using original high-quality safety equipment when we go to play on the field," Tendulkar stated in his letter. "The same original high-quality standards need to be maintained when it comes to helmets that will be used by two-wheeler riders in India," he added. The Robertsganj railway station in Uttar Pradesh has been renamed Sonbhadra, an official has said. The Union Home Ministry has given its approval for the renaming of the British-era railway station in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. Even though the railway station falls under the district, there is no place in the name of Sonbhadra. The Robertsganj station has been renamed Sonbhadra, the home ministry official said. This is the second time a railway station in Uttar Pradesh has been rechristened. The Mughalsarai railway station was renamed after RSS ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya in last August. Uber said today it is cooperating with police following a deadly accident involving one of the ride-share company's self-driving cars in Arizona. The Uber vehicle was in autonomous mode, with an operator behind the wheel, when it hit a woman walking in the street in the city of Tempe, according to the San Francisco-based company. Vehicle registration in Bihar grew 6.5 times in the past 11 years, which signifies the state's economic prosperity, Transport Minister Santosh Kumar Nirala today said in the Assembly. "There has been increase in the number of registration of vehicles in the past several years. This symbolises economic and social prosperity of the state. A total of 1,47,309 vehicles were registered in 2006-07 while the registration of vehicle has gone up to 9,50,120 by the end of February 2018. Uncontrolled development without proper disaster risk assessment has increased the risk of losses from disasters, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar said today. Inaugurating the first India-Japan workshop on disaster risk reduction here, Kumar underlining the impact of disaster on development and said climate change has further aggravated the risk. "Therefore, disaster risk management can no longer remain isolated from the overall strategy of sustainable development," he said. Kumar said the two ancient Asian civilisations of India and Japan, both of which have frequently witnessed the fury of natural catastrophes, are investing pro-actively on mainstreaming risk reduction into development. As many as 267 schools, including government and state-aided schools, do not have fire safety certificate in the national capital, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told the Delhi Assembly today. Sisodia, who holds the education portfolio, said that 162 city-run schools and 105 government-aided schools do not have fire safety certificates. The revelation poses a question about the safety of students studying in the government and government aided-schools in the city. In a written reply to a question asked by AAP MLA Pawan Sharma, Sisodia told the House that out of the 105 government-aided schools, 88 have applied for fire safety certificate. The deputy chief minister, however, said that all the 162 government schools have applied for the same. A fire broke out at Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh yesterday evening, reducing 18 houses to ashes, police today said. However, there were no casualties in the incident. The incident occurred at Model Village in Roing, the district headquarters. The houses were under District Urban Development Agency (DUDA). The wind-aided fire spread quickly to the closely built houses and reduced all 18 of them to ashes before the fire fighters brought the flame under control after hours of efforts. The fire is suspected to have started from an unattended fireplace, the police said. Roing Fire Station in-charge Kasem Tayeng informed that strong winds made it difficult for the fire fighters to contain the blaze.
