Bihar: Health min seeks detailed report after woman operated in torch light

Bihar health minister, Mangal Pandey, has "sought a detailed report" from civil surgeons on Monday in the wake of an incident, where a woman was operated on with the help of a torch light, and detested it by saying that "incidents like these shouldn't happen".In the recently released video from Sadar Hospital in Saharsa, a doctor is seen to be sewing a woman's right hand while another woman is holding a torch."Patient was injured and given stitches in dressing room, no operation was conducted. Have asked civil surgeon about the incident and have sought a detailed report. Incidents like these shouldn't happen, " commented Mangal Pandey on the same.Earlier on March 11, a road accident victim's severed leg was allegedly used as a pillow to prop him up in the emergency ward of a government-run hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi town.

US-Bangla plane crash: 23 bodies to be brought back to B'desh today

Maha farmers affected by Feb hailstorms given Rs 313 cr: Min

The Maharashtra government has provided financial assistance of Rs 313.58 crore to farmers who were affected by hailstorms and unseasonal rains that lashed several parts of the state in February, revenue minister Chandrakant Patil today said. In a written reply to a question in the Legislative Assembly, Patil said that hailstorms and rain damaged agriculture crops over an area of 2.54 lakh hectare and multi-crops on an area of 38,046 hectare. The damage was spread over 19 districts in Vidarbha, Marathwada and north Maharashtra and it included the death of six persons and several head of cattle, he said. Patil, in his written reply, stated that those who were affected were given Rs 313.58 crore as compensation as per the guidelines of the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF). Two buried alive as van collides with sand-laden lorry

Two persons were buried alive and one injured when the van in which they were travelling collided with a sand-laden lorry near here today, police said. The lorry turned sideways in the impact of the collision and the sand came crashing down on the other vehicle, they said. Passers-by saw the three occupants struggling in the sand and informed police who used an earth-mover to remove it. However, two persons suffocated to death while another was seriously injured, police said. The injured person has been admitted to a nearby hospital. The lorry driver ran away from the spot and a search is on for him, they added.

Major fire breaks out at godown in Mumbai

A major fire today broke out at a godown in Maharashtra Nagar in suburban Govandi, a fire brigade official said. "We got a call about the blaze at around 1.25 pm. Eight fire-fighting engines and four water tanks have been rushed to the spot. Efforts to douse the fire are on," the official attached to the Mumbai Fire Brigade said. According to him, so far there are no reports of anybody being injured in the blaze. P S Rahangdale, Chief Fire Officer of the Mumbai Fire Brigade said that the blaze was confined to various ground floor 100x100 ft structures.

Speeding truck mows down two cops, one killed

A police constable on patrolling duty was killed and another personnel critically injured when a speeding truck mowed them down in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district, a police official said today. The truck driver, who was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, has been arrested, he said. The two policemen, posted at the Kharsia police station in the district, were on routine patrolling when suddenly the speeding truck hit them yesterday on Raigarh-Urdana road, he said. "Constable Kaushal Rathiya (40) died on the spot while the other policeman sustained serious injuries in the accident," the official at the Kharsia police station said. The injured constable was admitted in a private hospital where his condition was said be to be critical, he said. 2 buses parked near petrol pump catch fire

Two private buses caught fire near a petrol pump in Dholpur district of Rajasthan today. However, a major tragedy was averted as fire fighters promptly extinguished the blaze before it could spread to the petrol pump. No one was injured in the fire. The fire took place in the town area where the buses which were parked very close to the petrol pump caught fire after a high-voltage electricity wire fell on them, Dholpur Sadar police station SHO Satish Kumar said.

Five killed in 24-hour Philippine hotel blaze

Five people have perished in a raging inferno that tore through a hotel and casino complex in Manila, authorities said Monday, after firefighters battled more than 24 hours to douse the flames. Rescuers said billowing smoke, sometimes so dense it obscured the 22-floor Waterfront Manila Pavilion, had hampered their efforts to contain the blaze which started Sunday morning. Another IndiGo A320neo withdrawn over Pratt & Whitney engine concerns

Budget carrier IndiGo, whose 11 A320neo aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines are grounded due to safety concerns, today had to pull out one more such aircraft from service. The A320 neo aircraft, bearing registration number VT-ITX, has not flown since 8:45am today after landing at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi international Airport (IGIA), according to FlightRadar24, a flight-tracking website. According to a source, the airline was forced to ground the aircraft after metal chip particles were detected in the jet's engine oil after it completed the Bengaluru-New Delhi flight this morning. This is the third incident of an IndiGo A320neo, fitted with P&W engines, facing a glitch since the grounding of 11 aircraft on March 12. Kenya floods claim 12 lives

At least 12 people have lost their lives in floods triggered by continuous rainfall in Kenya on Sunday.Anadolu Agency quoted the police as saying that the floods had swept away two children aged four and five from the Symulie and Kambo villages in Makueni County in eastern Kenya.Injured people were taken to the Makindu hospital.The floods costing millions in damage to property as many roads and bridges have been also been swept away during the current short rains from March to April.Several schools were also shut due to the floods in the country.The Meteorological Department of Kenya has warned of more heavy rains next week.

Australian wildfires raze dozens of homes

Wildfires have razed dozens of homes in southeast Australia, but there have been no reports of serious injury. Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said on Monday the worst hit town is Tathra on the south coast of New South Wales state where more than 70 homes and businesses have been severely damaged or destroyed. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley says up to 18 homes had been destroyed by several fires in neighbouring Victoria state. Most of the weekend blazes had been brought under control by today.

3 killed, 23 injured in Philippine hotel fire

At least three people died and 23 others were injured when a fire broke out at a hotel in Philippines' capital city Manila.According to The Manila Times, Manila Police District (MPD) spokesperson Superintendent Erwin Margarejo said two hotel employees were among those killed in the fire that hit the Waterfront Manila Pavilion Hotel and Casino in Manila on Sunday.Johnny Yu, director of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the injured were rushed to the Manila Doctors' Hospital.The Head of the Philippine National Red Cross, Sen. Richard Gordon, wrote on Twitter, "PRC currently responding to a fire that broke at Manila Pavilion Hotel. Our team dispatched 2 ambulance units and 1 fire truck. 3.0-magnitude earthquake rattles parts of central Oklahoma

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake has shaken parts of central Oklahoma. The US Geological Survey says the quake was recorded at 1:50 pm (local time) Sunday about 15 kilometres north-northwest of Langston, which is about 69 kilometres north-northwest of Oklahoma City. The temblor was recorded at a depth of about 5.5 kilometres. No injuries or damage were reported. Geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0. Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years, with many linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and natural gas production. Scientists have also linked earthquakes in Kansas, Texas and other states to wastewater injection. Oklahoma regulators have directed several oil and gas producers in the state to close injection wells or reduce volumes.

Rescue of labourers trapped under building debris underway

Rescue operations are underway after several labourers got trapped after the ceiling of an under construction building fell on them in Bulandshahr on Saturday.Six injured labourers have been rescued by far, the sources said.The incident took place in Sikandrabad area of Bulandshahr. Fire in scrap godown in Tughlakabad village

A fire broke out tonight in a godown in the Tughlakabad village area of south Delhi, where plastic and other scrap materials were stored by ragpickers. The fire department said it was informed about the incident at around 8.15 pm and about 10 fire-tenders were rushed to the area. By 10.15 pm, the blaze was brought under control and "cooling" operations were underway, an officer of the department said, adding that no one was injured or harmed in any manner in the fire. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, he said.

Death toll in Bihar road accident rises to 14, FIR lodged

Four more persons died today taking the Death toll in yesterday's road accident in Sitamarhi district to 14, a district official said. Ten persons were killed on the spot when the bus had skidded off an elevated highway in Runnisaidpur police station area of Sitamarhi last evening. "Four persons died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Muzaffarpur till this morning. Fifty others are still undergoing treatment with the condition of some of them are stated to be critical," Sub Divisional Officer (Sadar), Sitamarhi, Satyendra Kumar said. The SDO also said an FIR has been lodged at the police station against the owner of the bus and its driver, both based in Muzaffarpur. "The driver fled after the bus came crashing down," he said.
