38 killed in bus accident in Ethiopia

38 people died and 10 other got injured after a bus fell off a cliff in Ethiopia on Tuesday.The accident occurred in Legambo district of Amhara in Ethiopia when the bus carrying 48 people was en route to a city named Dessie, Xinhua quoted Legambo district government communication affairs office as saying.Those injured are receiving treatment in the nearby health centres.

Heavy snowfall: Stranded locals, tourists rescued in Arunachal

As much as 680 people, including tourists, who were stuck in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district due to heavy snowfall were rescued by the army on Monday.There was more than two feet of snowfall due to which 320 vehicles were stuck in sub zero temperatures between Ahirgarh and Sela Pass of the district.Three teams from the Baisakhi Brigade of Blazing Sword Division toiled for than seven hours till midnight at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet in order to rescue every single person stuck in the snowfall, according to army's official statement.On March 18, 2017, a sudden heavy snowfall at this location had led to launch of a massive rescue effort by the army where a total of 127 civilians were rescued.

13 killed after bus falls into gorge in Uttarakhand

Thirteen people were killed and over a dozen were injured after a bus fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand's Almora district today, officials said. District Magistrate Eva Ashish Srivastava said the incident took place at Potam, 120 km away from the district headquarters. Thirteen people, including the driver, were killed when the bus fell into the gorge, Srivastava said. Over 12 people sustained injuries in the accident. Four of them were seriously injured and were referred to Ramnagar for treatment, the DM said. Prime facie it seemed that the bus was speeding and the accident occurred when it tried to avoid hitting another vehicle, Srivastava said.

Trekking group organiser claims it followed procedures

The city-based group believed to have arranged the ill-fated trekking expedition to Kurangani Hills where 11 members were killed in a forest fire, today claimed the team had received an "entry pass" to proceed with their mission. It also blamed local farmers for the fire that engulfed the area, killing some of the trekkers on a "women's trek to commemorate women's day." Majority of the members were women, though there were male volunteers who accompanied them. "We came to know that on Saturday, March 10, the group started off from Kurangani at the base and paid fees at the forest entry check-post who issued an entry pass," an 'update' put up on the website of 'chennai trekking club' (CTC) said. Comm mining: Par panel asks CIL to reassess its strength, weaknesses

In the wake of government opening up the coal mining to the private sector companies for commercial use, a parliamentary panel today said that state-owned CIL should review its areas of strength and weaknesses in order to remain competitive in the sector. "Very recently a decision on opening up of commercial coal mining for private sector has been taken moving from an era of monopoly of Coal India Ltd to competition. "In this background, the Committee desire the Coal India Ltd to reassess their areas of strength and weaknesses to stay competitive in the coal sector, particularly, when use of other eco-friendly energy options are being encouraged," Standing Committee on Coal and Steel said in its latest report tabled in the Parliament today. A high-level delegation from Bangladesh today arrived here to discuss with Nepalese officials the issues related to a crash involving a US-Bangla Airlines aircraft that killed 49 people. Chemicals factory fire: Four including owner, manager arrested

The district rural police today arrested four people in connection with the fire at a chemicals factory in the Boisar-Tarapur industrial estate here last week, that claimed four lives. Those arrested include the factory's owner, Saral Shah, its manager Hemraj Varasane, a chemist employed with the factory, Namdeo Mhatre, and a worker-supervisor, Raju Raote. Offences have been registered against them under IPC sections 304(A) (causing death by negligence), 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) and other relevant provisions, the police said in a release issued here today. The police said the accused had not taken proper steps for the safety of workers and did not train them properly, as a result of which while mixing the chemicals, there was an explosion in the reactor, which led to the fire. Thirteen dead in inferno after Turkey bus crash

Thirteen people including children were killed and 20 others injured today when a Turkish passenger bus burst into flames after colliding with a truck in northern Anatolia, state media reported. The bus, which was travelling from Istanbul to the northern city of Tokat, hit the truck on a motorway in Corum province early in the morning, according to the government-run Andalou news agency.
