Fire breaks out in house in Baranagar, 3 injured

A fire broke out in a building at Baranagar area in the northern fringes of the city injuring three persons today, police said. The fire broke out shortly after noon on the third floor of the four-storey house at Gopal Lal Thakur Road due to suspected gas leakage from a LPG cylinder, Fire Brigade said. Three fire tenders are on the spot to extinguish the flame, they said. The injured have been admitted to hospitals, the police added.

A powerful explosion and subsequent fire at a three-storey building killed four people in the English city of Leicester, police said today but ruled out a terror link to the blast. Police declared a "major incident" after the explosion occurred last evening on a stretch of road containing commercial and residential properties in Hinckley Road area of Leicester, over 143 km away from London with a large Gujarati-origin population. Four people were killed in the explosion and subsequent fire that destroyed the building which consisted of a shop premises on the ground level and a two-storey flat above it, police said. Kiwi pacer Rance helps extinguish fire at Greytown's White Swan pub

Elephant runs amok at Kerala temple, mahout pulled to safety

A tusker ran amok during the annual festivities at the Euttmanoor Mahadeva temple here early today, but none was injured. The mahout, who was atop the elephant, had a miraculous escape as he was pulled to safety by local people from atop a gopuram by dropping a rope, visuals aired by television channels showed. The incident occurred at 3 AM this morning. The elephant went on a rampage reportedly after being attacked by another tusker next to it. Five people were killed and two were critically injured after being run over by a train at Pilkhuwa railway station in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh.The deceased, while crossing a railway track, were run over by a locomotive train yesterday near Pilkhuwa crossing.Police said the victims, were either sitting on railway tracks or were trying to cross the railway tacks when the incident took place."We have information of five deaths and two others have been injured who have been rushed to hospital. Three killed after lorry rams into car in Telangana

Three people were killed and one suffered serious injuries after a lorry rammed into a car near Telangana's Kothagudem area.The incident took place around 12:00 a.m. near Kothaguda X Road.The deceased have been identified as Padma, Swapna and Manikanth.They were traveling from Pochampally village from Hyderabad."A heavy loaded lorry carrying sticks hit a Matiz car in which six members were travelling. Final bodies removed from rubble of Taiwan quake

The last two victims of an earthquake that hit the Taiwan tourist hotspot of Hualien three weeks ago have finally been removed from the rubble of a collapsed hotel. The Chinese couple from Beijing who were on a sightseeing trip had already been named among the 17 dead after a 6.4-magnitude quake toppled buildings in the coastal town. But their bodies remained in a second-floor hotel in the 12-storey Yun Tsui building, which was left leaning at around a 50-degree angle by the quake, complicating rescue efforts due to fears of an imminent collapse. Emergency workers had combed through rubble at the foot of the mainly residential block since the quake struck the eastern city on February 6, retrieving the last two bodies Sunday. Three other members of the couple's family were also killed in the quake. Of the 17 people who died, 14 perished in the Yun Tsui building.
