Grand Canyon helicopter crash victim dies, 3 still critical

A British tourist who was pulled from the wreckage of a fiery helicopter crash in the Grand Canyon died from his injuries, according to Nevada authorities. Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg confirmed in a statement that Neil Udall, 31, died at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. He had been with a group of fellow Britons visiting Las Vegas when a sightseeing helicopter they were flying in crashed in part of the Grand Canyon on Feb. 10. Three of Udall's friends died. Udall was one of four people, including the pilot, who were hospitalized after the crash on Thursday. The other survivors are the 42-year-old pilot Scott Booth; Ellie Milward, 29; and Jennifer Barham, 39. Hospital spokesman Scott Kerbs said all three remained in critical condition. The crash killed veterinary receptionist Becky Dobson, 27; her boyfriend Stuart Hill, a 30-year-old car salesman; and his brother, Jason Hill, a 32-year-old lawyer. Chennai: 2 held with 40,000 Malaysian currency

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Thursday apprehended two passengers with 40,000 Malaysian currency at the Chennai airport.The accused have been identified as Krishnan Padmanaban and Karunanithi Rajathi, who were supposed to travel to Kuala Lumpur via Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines Flight. They were carrying cash worth Rs 6.4 lakh."Our team noticed suspicious activities of two passengers while entering the terminal. During the screening of their hand baggage, images of currency bundles were found. The matter was then informed to the customs official," the CISF officials said."Both the passengers along with the recovered cash have been handed over to customs officials for further legal action," the CISF added.A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

Road crash that killed 8 Indians was entirely avoidable, UK court told

One of Britain's worst road accidents that claimed the lives of eight Indians last year was an "entirely avoidable" collision with the most "catastrophic" and tragic consequences, a UK court was told today. At the opening of a trial at Reading Crown Court, the prosecution laid out the case against two truck drivers charged with dangerous driving. They are accused of causing the death to Nottingham-based Keralite minibus driver Cyriac Joseph and seven of his Indian passengers. Minor fire at ancient temple in TN damages pooja articles

A minor fire in a 1000-year old temple near here damaged pooja articles, clothes and an almirah kept in the sanctum sanctorum today, police said. No one was injured in the fire at the Karuppur Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple. The blaze was doused by fire and rescue service personnel in an half-hour long operation, they said. The idol of the deity was intact, they said. The mishap comes close on the heels of a major blaze in the Goddess Meenakshi temple in Madurai that destroyed 40 shops and anther minor fire at Sri Athi Kumbeswarar temple here earlier this month. According to police, in the incident today, smoke was noticed around 1 PM by the locals. Pooja articles, around 50 saris and 30 dhotis and an electronic muscial instrument were destroyed in the fire.

Indian among 5 killed in road accidents in Nepal

An Indian was among five people killed in two road accidents in Nepal, a media report said today. The Indian was identified as Gauri Shanker Chaurasia, a resident of Siddharthanagar in Uttar Pradesh. The 50-year-old was killed when a bus hit his motorcycle at Dohani on the Taulihawa-Bhairahawa road section here yesterday, The Kathmandu Post reported. Chaurasia's body was taken to a hospital for postmortem, it said. In another accident, at least four persons were killed and three others sustained serious injuries when their jeep skidded off from a hilly road in Dailekh district in Nepal today , police said. The injured were admitted to a local hospital for treatment, police said. The jeep, heading from district headquarters Dailekh to Mahabu Rural Municipality, fell 200 metre down from the hilly road. The cause for the accident was not known yet, police added.

Five dead, 15 missing in Indonesia landslide

At least five people have been killed and 15 are still missing after a landslide cascaded down the terraced slopes of a rice field on the Indonesian island of Java today, officials said. The victims, farmers tending their crops in Brebes district, Central Java, were buried under an avalanche of mud and rock around 8:00 am. "The landslide buried the farmers working in their rice fields," disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement. The incident followed several days of heavy rain in the mountainous area, about seven hours east of the capital Jakarta. Another 14 farmers were found with light injuries and have been taken to a nearby medical centre for treatment. Rescuers including the army, police and local volunteers are digging through debris to search for survivors, the agency said. UP: 3 killed in motorcycle collision

Three people were killed and two others injured in a collision between two motorcycles near Singhachawar village here this morning, the police said today. Chitranjan Sahni (17), Jay Prakash (25) and Sanjiv Sahni (15) were killed on the spot as their motorcycles collided this morning, Superintendent of Police Vijaypal Singh said. Two others were injured in the accident of whom one with serious injuries was referred to Varanasi hospital, Singh added. Chinese officials have ruled out any human factor after preliminary investigation into the fire that broke out at Tibet's most sacred Buddhist temple Jokhang Monastery, which is included on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
