Three die in separate accidents in Greater Noida

Three people were killed in separate accidents here, the police said today. Kamal Kishore, resident of Dhada village here, was critically injured in a road accident last night and was taken to a district hospital, from where he was referred to a hospital in Delhi, they said, adding that he succumbed to injuries on the way. A labourer was killed when a wall of an under- construction building here collapsed on him yesterday, police said. Puran Singh died at the Kailash hospital here while undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in a road accident last night, the officials said, adding that the bodies were sent for postmortem.

Egypt's health ministry says 13 killed in road accident

Egypt's Health Ministry says a deadly road accident has left 13 people dead and eight others injured in south Cairo. The ministry says Saturday's accident happened when a small bus crashed into a truck on the main road connecting the southern city of Beni Suef to Cairo. All those killed were on the bus, which was carrying 17 people. Road accidents are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws. The World Health Organization says such accidents kill around 12,000 people in Egypt annually. The country's official statistics agency says 14,700 road accidents took place in 2016. Egypt generally has a poor transportation safety record. In August, two passenger trains collided outside Egypt's Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, killing 43 people and injured scores.

Fire breaks out at London Zoo

A fire broke out at London Zoo early today, engulfing a cafe and shop near an animal petting area, although it was not immediately clear if any of the creatures were hurt. "Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a cafe and shop at London Zoo," the London Fire Brigade said in an initial statement. "Approximately three quarters of an adventure cafe and shop and half of the roof is currently alight. "An animal petting area is nearby. It is not known if any animals are involved at this stage." The alarm was raised shortly after 6:00 am (0600 GMT), and it was not until around 9:30am that the fire was brought under control. "Crews will remain on the scene throughout the morning damping down the fire," the fire brigade said in a second statement. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Philippines storm death toll climbs to 133: govt

The death toll from a tropical storm in the southern Philippines climbed swiftly to 133 on today, as rescuers pulled dozens of bodies from a swollen river, police said. Tropical Storm Tembin has lashed the nation's second- largest island of Mindanao since yesterday, triggering flash floods and mudslides. The Philippines is pummelled by 20 major storms each year on average, many of them deadly. But Mindanao, home to 20 million people, is rarely hit by these cyclones. Rescuers retrieved 36 bodies from the Salog River in Mindanao on Saturday, as officials reported more fatalities in the impoverished Zamboanga peninsula. The bodies were swept downriver from a flooded town upstream called Salvador, Rando Salvacion, the Sapad town police chief, told AFP. 6 persons killed in road accident in UP

As many as six persons were today killed and one other got critically injured when a truck collided with a tempo near Neri village on National Highway 24, police said. Two women, three men and a child from the village were on their way in the tempo to meet a person admitted to the district hospital when the accident took place, Sitapur District Magistrate Sarika Mohan said. All the six of them were killed in the accident, Mohan said. The truck was on its way to Shahjahanpur when the driver lost control over it and hit the tempo head on after breaking a divider, she said. The bodies are being sent for post-mortem examination, the DM said.

Express train derails in Telangana; passengers safe

Two wheels of a coach of an express train came off the track near Nizamabad in Telangana today, but no one was injured, Railway officials said. The incident, involving the 12793 Tirupati-Nizamabad Rayalaseema Express, affected rail traffic. The derailment occurred at 0805 hours between Uppalavai-Sirnapalli stations on the Secunderabad-Mudkhed section of the South Central Railway, they said. None was hurt in the incident, they said. Passengers of the train were immediately transported to their destinations by the Railway authorities, they said. The incident, which happened on a single line track, led to the cancellation of Secunderabad-CST Mumbai Devagiri Express and partial cancellation of six other trains, the officials said. Track repair work was underway to restore normal running of trains "at the earliest", they added.

Gujarat constructed most houses for urban poor: Official data

Gujarat has constructed most number of houses for the urban poor under the Centre's flagship housing scheme 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)' in the country, official data shows. As many as 54,474 houses have been constructed in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, since 2014-15 under the scheme. This accounts for 18.70 per cent of the 2.91 lakh total houses constructed in 36 states and UTs in the country, according to the data of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Gujarat has received central assistance of Rs 1,355 crore for construction of these houses. Under the PMAY(U) scheme, the government targets to construct 1.2 crore affordable houses for urban poor across the country by 2022. The government provides central assistance under various components for construction of the houses. Gujarat was followed by Karnataka with construction of about 33,450 houses since 2014-15. AirAsia flight resumes journey to Kuala Lumpur

27 killed after bus falls into river in Rajasthan

At least 27 people were killed and and five others injured today when a private bus fell into Banas river from a nearly 100-foot high bridge in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur district, police said. The incident took place early morning in Soorwal police station area when the bus was on its way to Lalsot from Sawai Madhopur, they said. The driver of the bus lost control over the vehicle and it fell into the river after breaking the railing of the bridge, the police said. Passengers were from other states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Assam. Several of them were going to offer prayers at a temple in Malarna Chour in the district, Sawai Madhopur Superintendent of Police Mamman Singh told PTI. Most of the people died due to drowning including the bus driver, he said. Death toll may rise, police said. Several injured as trains collide near Vienna
