Two persons were killed and 10 others injured following a collision between vehicles due to dense fog in the Arnia area here, police said today. The incident occurred last night on NH-91 when, as a result of thick fog, vehicles dashed against each other, SP (Rural) V K Tiwari said. Saluddin (42), a resident of Meerut, and Prem Chand Yadav (42), hailing from Baduan, were killed in the accident, he said. The injured persons were taken to Aligarh Medical College for treatment, he added.
A 26-year-old Australian was killed and many others were injured after a collision between several vehicles due to dense fog on the Yamuna Expressway this morning. The Australian, Mathew, was riding a motorcycle and was going to Agra along with his friends when a bus collided with a truck and then hit his two-wheeler, injuring him critically, SHO Farmood Ali Pundir said. Mathew died on the way to a hospital, he added. The incident occurred in the Dankaur area of Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Budh Nagar district, around 18 kms from here. A school student in a van, coming from behind that also collided with the bus, driver and conductor of a UP roadways bus and some passengers were also injured, the SHO said, adding that they were taken to a hospital for treatment. A passenger bus today rammed into a trailer parked along a highway amid dense fog in Pakistan's Multan district, killing at least 11 people and injuring 20 others. The incident took place when the bus, en route to Rajanpur from here, hit the trailer near Khanewal town in the country's Punjab province, according to a media report. While 11 people died on the spot, 20 others were injured, the Express Tribune quoted police as saying. The bus driver was also killed, they said. According to the report, dense and foggy weather conditions over the last few weeks in Punjab have disrupted air travel and transportation. Over 10 crore people in the country are getting water contaminated with excess fluoride, the Lok Sabha was informed today. To deal with the problem, the central government has released Rs 800 crore so that community water purification plants could be set up, Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Narendra Singh Tomar said during Question Hour. About 10.06 crore population living in 12,577 habitations in different states and union territories are getting drinking water with excess fluoride, he said. "To deal with arsenic and fluoride contamination, with the recommendation of NITI Aayog, the Government of India has released Rs 800 crore in March 2016 for commissioning water purification plants in 1,327 arsenic and 12,014 fluoride affected habitations so that safe water for drinking and cooking needs is addressed immediately," Tomar said. In addition, funds to the tune of Rs 100 crore each have also been provided for tackling arsenic and fluoride problems in West Bengal
A fire broke out in an eatery at the Bandra railway station here in the wee hours today, an official said. No injury or casualty was reported in the mishap. At the time of the incident, there were very few passengers at the station, which is a heritage landmark. The blaze erupted around 4.25 am at the food stall on platform no. 4, a fire brigade official said. Upon getting the information, the fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames, the official said. "The timely action (to put off the blaze) prevented further damage to the roof of the heritage building," he said. A spokesperson of the Western Railway said, "It was a minor blaze in a stall which was immediately put off. There was no impact on passengers or train operations." Bandra is one of the busiest railway stations in Mumbai.
