Collision of vehicles kills 2, injures 10
Two persons were killed and 10 others injured following a collision between vehicles due to dense fog in the Arnia area here, police said today. The incident occurred last night on NH-91 when, as a result of thick fog, vehicles dashed against each other, SP (Rural) V K Tiwari said. Saluddin (42), a resident of Meerut, and Prem Chand Yadav (42), hailing from Baduan, were killed in the accident, he said. The injured persons were taken to Aligarh Medical College for treatment, he added.
Australian killed in road accident on Yamuna Expressway
A 26-year-old Australian was killed and many others were injured after a collision between several vehicles due to dense fog on the Yamuna Expressway this morning. The Australian, Mathew, was riding a motorcycle and was going to Agra along with his friends when a bus collided with a truck and then hit his two-wheeler, injuring him critically, SHO Farmood Ali Pundir said. Mathew died on the way to a hospital, he added. The incident occurred in the Dankaur area of Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Budh Nagar district, around 18 kms from here. A school student in a van, coming from behind that also collided with the bus, driver and conductor of a UP roadways bus and some passengers were also injured, the SHO said, adding that they were taken to a hospital for treatment. Traffic on the Yamuna Expressway was affected for few hours, he said.
16 killed in South Korea building fire
At least 16 people died and over 10 were injured in a fire that engulfed a commercial building in South Korea's Jecheon city on Thursday, firefighters said.
16 feared dead after South Korean fire
A fire broke out today at an eight- story building in the central South Korean city of Jecheon, leaving one person confirmed dead and 15 others unresponsive and presumed dead, South Korean officials said. A fire department official from North Chungcheong province said the status of the 15 had not yet been confirmed by doctors. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office rules. The official said at least 16 others are being treated for injuries, and rescue workers are searching the building for people after extinguishing the fire. Local media showed firefighters fighting the blaze with trucks and helicopters, and a man jumping from a window as firefighters held a mattress below. It was unclear what caused the fire but it likely began at the building's parking lot, according to an official from Jecheon's fire department, who also requested anonymity. Woman dies of shock after Iran earthquake
Iranian state media says a woman died from shock and dozens of other people suffered minor injuries after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted a town near Tehran. The woman died in the town of Malard, the epicentre of the earthquake, about 40 km southwest of the capital. Her death was reported early today. More than a dozen aftershocks rippled through the area after the quake, and many Iranians braved the cold to spend the night outside. Iran is prone to earthquakes as it sits on major fault lines. In November, a 7.2 magnitude killed more than 600 people in western Iran. In 2003, a 6.6 magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.

Passenger bus rams into trailer in Pakistan, 11 killed
A passenger bus today rammed into a trailer parked along a highway amid dense fog in Pakistan's Multan district, killing at least 11 people and injuring 20 others. The incident took place when the bus, en route to Rajanpur from here, hit the trailer near Khanewal town in the country's Punjab province, according to a media report. While 11 people died on the spot, 20 others were injured, the Express Tribune quoted police as saying. The bus driver was also killed, they said. The injured, some of whom were said to be in critical condition, were shifted to a hospital in Multan, about 580 km from Islamabad. According to the report, dense and foggy weather conditions over the last few weeks in Punjab have disrupted air travel and transportation. Thick toxic smog has already disrupted normal life in parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with flights cancelled and road accidents surging, it added.

No criminal charges against Venus Williams in fatal car crash case
The police on Thursday said that criminal charges will not be filed against American tennis player Venus Williams in connection with the June fatal car crash, in which a person was killed."Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida State Statutes, no charges will be filed in this case," E!Online quoted the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department as saying.On June 9, Williams was involved in a car collision with Jerome Barson and his wife near Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.The 78-year-old man died 13 days after the accident while undergoing treatment.After his death, the Barson family filed a wrongful death suit against Williams.Police had initially said Williams was being held responsible for "violating the right of way of [the other driver]."However, the final report found that neither Williams nor the Barsons had violated the rule and no charges would be filed in the car collision.
SUV crashes into crowd in Melbourne, 15 injured
At least 15 people were injured after a car crashed into a group of people in Melbourne on Thursday.The police have cordoned off the area.According to The Age, a white SUV mowed down a number of people at a busy intersection of Flinders and Elizabeth streets in Melbourne's CBD. The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital.The Melbourne Police have arrested the driver and are further investigating terrorism angle into the incident as an officer at the scene described it as a terrorist incident. However, it has not been confirmed so far if the driver had terror motive.The car was not travelling at high speed when crashed, said the police.
10 cr people getting water with excess fluoride
Over 10 crore people in the country are getting water contaminated with excess fluoride, the Lok Sabha was informed today. To deal with the problem, the central government has released Rs 800 crore so that community water purification plants could be set up, Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Narendra Singh Tomar said during Question Hour. About 10.06 crore population living in 12,577 habitations in different states and union territories are getting drinking water with excess fluoride, he said. "To deal with arsenic and fluoride contamination, with the recommendation of NITI Aayog, the Government of India has released Rs 800 crore in March 2016 for commissioning water purification plants in 1,327 arsenic and 12,014 fluoride affected habitations so that safe water for drinking and cooking needs is addressed immediately," Tomar said. In addition, funds to the tune of Rs 100 crore each have also been provided for tackling arsenic and fluoride problems in West Bengal
Fire in food stall at Bandra railway station; none hurt
A fire broke out in an eatery at the Bandra railway station here in the wee hours today, an official said. No injury or casualty was reported in the mishap. At the time of the incident, there were very few passengers at the station, which is a heritage landmark. The blaze erupted around 4.25 am at the food stall on platform no. 4, a fire brigade official said. Upon getting the information, the fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames, the official said. "The timely action (to put off the blaze) prevented further damage to the roof of the heritage building," he said. A spokesperson of the Western Railway said, "It was a minor blaze in a stall which was immediately put off. There was no impact on passengers or train operations." Bandra is one of the busiest railway stations in Mumbai.
