Donald Trump has vowed to shake some of democracy's pillars in US

American presidential elections are a moment when the nation holds up a mirror to look at itself. They are a reflection of values and dreams, of grievances and scores to be settled. The results say much about a country's character, future and core beliefs. On Tuesday, America looked into that mirror and more voters saw former president Donald Trump, delivering him a far-reaching victory in the most contested states. He won for many reasons. One of them was that a formidable number of Americans, from different angles, said the state of democracy was a prime concern. The candidate they chose had campaigned through a lens of darkness, calling the country garbage and his opponent stupid, a communist and the b-word. The mirror reflected not only a restive nation's discontent but childless cat ladies, false stories of pets devoured by Haitian immigrant neighbours, a sustained emphasis on calling things weird, and a sudden bout of Democratic joy" now crushed. The campaign will be remembe

India, US relations set to remain strong under Trump administration

The India-US relationship is set to expand under the Donald Trump administration, but there could be some unease on issues like imports, tariffs and immigration, strategic affairs experts said after the Republican leader won the fiercely contested presidential election. The difficult issues between the two sides are likely to be addressed amicably as both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump have a great friendship, they said. In his election campaign, Trump proposed higher tariffs on foreign goods, especially imports from China and vowed to rid the US of all undocumented immigrants by launching a major deportation programme. Shortly after it became clear that Trump would be the next US President, Capitol Hill veteran and Communication Strategist Anang Mittal said leading figures in the Republican Party and conservative intellectuals consider the future of the India-US relationship as "pivotal" in shaping the 21st century. A day ahead of the election, Dhruva Jaishankar, the ...

Trump Media gains, even as Truth Social parent reports $19 mn loss

The parent company of Donald Trump's social networking site Truth Social lost USD 19.2 million in the last quarter, according to an earnings report released on the same day he won back the presidency. Trump Media and Technology Group reported late Tuesday that much of that loss stemmed from more than USD 12 million in legal fees, along with a decline in revenue, according to the surprise Election Day earnings report. Its stock price surged Wednesday but that was more likely due to Trump's defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris to retake the presidency than on its profit prospects. Trump created the company after he was banned from Twitter and Facebook following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Revenue for the three-month period that ended on September 30 was just over USD 1 million, down nearly 6 per cent from a year earlier. Trump Media, based in Sarasota, Florida, has lost more than USD 363 million so far this year. Trump Media said some of its costs related to the launch of i

Trump govt will maintain positive momentum in India-US ties, says USISPF

Congratulating president-elect Donald Trump on his stunning electoral victory, a top India centric American business advocacy group on Wednesday exuded confidence that the new administration will maintain the positive momentum in the India-US relationship. During his first administration, President Trump made the Indo-Pacific the preeminent focus for Washington's foreign policy, with the goal of securing a free and open Indo-Pacific, the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) said in a statement. From that auspicious start, the relationship has continued to flourish with deepening partnership across critical and emerging technologies, clean energy, rebuilding supply chains, fortifying our defences and cementing people-to-people ties, the USISPF said. We are confident that the new Trump administration will maintain the positive momentum in this critical relationship to secure the greatest economic, financial, and national security gains for both countries, it said. I am proud of VP Kamala Harris, says Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna

After her worst defeat in electoral history, Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna on Wednesday said that he is proud of Vice President Kamala Harris and one day Americans will recognise her blazing a trail. Harris, as a Democratic presidential nominee, lost to her Republican rival and now president-elect Donald Trump during the November 5 general elections. Today, I want to say I am proud of Kamala Harris, Khanna, 48, said. Representing Silicon Valley in the US House of Representatives, Khanna was re-elected for a fifth consecutive term on Tuesday. He grew up in Pennsylvania. As a young kid growing up in Bucks County, I would never have imagined an African and Indian American woman would become the nominee and get 48 per cent in Pennsylvania. Progress is hard. But one day Americans will recognise her blazing a trail, Khanna said. Khanna maintained that the Democrats, who have lost the White House along with the Senate and the House of Representatives, would bounce back soon. In 1

America deserves badass commander-in-chief right now: Vivek Ramaswamy

Of the view that the comeback of president-elect Donald Trump is the American comeback, entrepreneur-turned-politician Vivek Ramaswamy on Wednesday said that the country deserves a "badass commander-in-chief" right now and that's exactly what it got. Trump, 78, not only won the November 5 presidential elections in both popular votes and electoral college votes but also got the Republican Party control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Here's the reason why Donald Trump won by the largest margin of any president in modern history. He's not an ideologue. He's not a policy wonk. He's an American badass. They tried to DQ him, jail him, kill him (twice). None of it worked. Our self-appointed betters' in the media misunderstood him, underestimated him, doubted him, Ramaswamy said on Wednesday. But not once during this campaign did Trump misunderstand, underestimate, or doubt himself. As everyone at Mar-a-Lago celebrated around him last night, I watched him unfazed, with full
