Democrats set to approve party platform without Harris' candidacy update

Delegates at the Democratic National Convention are set to vote Monday night on their 2024 party platform, which lays out familiar priorities for the party but wrongly names President Joe Biden as the candidate running for reelection. The largely ceremonial vote at Chicago's convention will signal the party coalescing around a singular vision for the next four years though a somewhat outdated one, as Vice President Kamala Harris has only outlined a few of her own specific policy positions since she took over the Democratic presidential ticket last month. The Democratic National Committee on Sunday said the more than 90-page document makes a strong statement about the historic work that President Biden and Vice President Harris have accomplished hand-in-hand, and offers a vision for a progressive agenda that we can build on as a nation and as a Party as we head into the next four years. The party said its platform committee voted to approve the platform on July 16, days before Biden

Harris, Trump offer worlds-apart contrasts on top issues in US prez race

Vice President Kamala Harris has replaced President Joe Biden atop the presidential ticket, but his finish the job campaign mantra can still largely apply to her top policy goals. She's promising to continue a lot of what Biden was doing during the past four years if she's elected to four of her own. Former President Donald Trump, for his part, is itching to get back to the White House and accomplish what he didn't during his first term. Since Biden stepped down last month, the vice president has announced few major policy proposals beyond a new push to prevent price gouging by food producers and grocers and plans to cut taxes for families, attempt to bring down homebuying and rental prices and reduce medical debt. Harris also used a recent rally in Las Vegas, where the economy runs on the hospitality industry, to call for ending taxes on tips paid to restaurant, hotel and other service employees. That came more than a month after Trump used his own Las Vegas rally to promise the sam

Favourable views of Harris have risen this summer heading into DNC: Polls

Vice President Kamala Harris is entering the Democratic National Convention with increased excitement from Democrats and a steady rise in her favorability ratings among Americans as a whole. About half of US adults 48 per cent have a very or somewhat favorable view of Harris, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That is up from 39 per cent at the beginning of the summer, before President Joe Biden's poor performance in his debate against former President Donald Trump ultimately led him to drop out of the presidential race. That's not just an improvement for Harris but also from where President Joe Biden stood before he dropped out, when 38 per cent said they had a favorable opinion of him. It's also somewhat better than the 41 per cent of adults who say they have a favorable opinion of Trump. The rise in favorability for Harris comes as more Americans overall have formed an opinion about her while the Harris and Trump campaign

Harris has brought in hope and joy into election, says DNC Chair Harrison

The nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris as Democratic presidential candidate has brought tremendous energy and enthusiasm into the presidential elections, a top party leader said Sunday, adding that she has brought in a lot of joy and hope. Madam Vice President Kamala Harris as a nominee of the Democratic Party has brought such tremendous energy and enthusiasm into the presidential elections. She's bringing in so many young folks into this campaign and people from different backgrounds. They're really interested in her, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison told PTI in an interview. She has brought a lot of hope and joy into this election, which is so necessary, particularly when you're running against somebody like Donald Trump, who's about fear, who's about dividing the country, not bringing us together. And so, Kamala Harris is just a tremendous figure and she's running one of the most amazing campaigns I've ever seen, Harrison said. In his capacity as the cha

Several activists expected in Chicago DNC to call for Gaza ceasefire

Thousands of activists are expected to converge on Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention, hoping to call attention to abortion rights, economic injustice and the war in Gaza. While Vice President Kamala Harris has energised crowds of supporters as she prepares to accept the Democratic nomination, progressive activists maintain their mission remains the same. Activists say they learned lessons from last month's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and are predicting bigger crowds and more robust demonstrations in Chicago, a city with deep social activism roots. Who is protesting? Demonstrations are expected every day of the convention and, while their agendas vary, many activists agree an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war is the priority. Things kicked off Sunday on the convention's eve with an abortion rights march along iconic Michigan Avenue. Organiser Linda Loew said even though Democrats have pushed to safeguard reproductive rights at home,

Harris-Walz embark on bus tour in Pennsylvania before Chicago convention

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz embarked on a bus tour in southwestern Pennsylvania on Sunday, hoping to ride a wave of enthusiasm for her candidacy to their party's nominating convention in Chicago this week. Vice President Harris and Walz, the governor of Minnesota, were joined by their spouses, Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, as they arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport and greeted supporters. They will make stops in the Pittsburgh area to glad-hand with voters. Harris and Emhoff were scheduled to deliver remarks at an event in the borough of Rochester, in Beaver County, which Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, won in 2020. The stop came exactly four weeks after President Joe Biden Biden dropped his reelection bid and endorsed Harris to replace him on the ticket. Southwestern Pennsylvania is a critical part of a key battleground state that has long commanded the attention of presidential candidates. The state voted for Tru

Trump zigzags between economic remarks, insults at rally in Pennsylvania

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday repeatedly swerved from a message focused on the economy into non sequiturs and personal attacks, including thrice declaring that he was better looking than Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump wound back and forth between hitting his points on economic policy and delivering a smattering of insults and impressions of President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron as he held a rally in northeastern Pennsylvania. The former president has seemed to struggle to adjust to his new opponent after Democrats replaced their nominee. Over the past week, he has diverged during campaign appearances away from the policies he was billed to speak about and instead diverted to a rotation of familiar attack lines and insults. As he attacked Democrats for inflation at the top of his speech, Trump asked his crowd of supporters, You don't mind if I go off teleprompter for a second, do you? Joe Biden hates her. Joseph Costello, a spokesperson for the ..

Bibles, crypto, Truth Social, gold bars: Trump's reported sources of income

Former US President Donald Trump owns more than $1 million worth of cryptocurrency and up to $250,000 in gold bars along with the portfolio of golf courses and real estate properties that have made him a billionaire, according to newly released financial disclosures. The details come from documents filed by Trump as part of his Republican presidential bid that were released Thursday night. The more than 200 pages of paperwork give a limited picture of the real estate developer-turned reality TV star-turned-president's money and investments. In accordance with federal law, most assets' values are listed in a range, though Trump reports the precise figure for some of his income. The document does not detail the former president's business losses, making it impossible to determine how much of a profit any of his myriad holdings provides. But it provides a glimpse at Trump's vast wealth and some new details about the unusual ways he makes money. UNUSUAL INVESTMENTS AND SOURCES OF ...

Trump refuses to tone down his attacks on Harris, says entitled to do so

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said he is "entitled" to personally attack his Democratic rival Kamala Harris because he doesn't "have a lot of respect for her", as he dismissed calls from allies to refocus his campaign on policy issues in his bid to reclaim the White House. Trump, 78, said he is "angry" at Vice President Harris, 59, over the Biden administration's handling of issues ranging from inflation to immigration. "I don't have a lot of respect for her. I don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence. I think she'll be a terrible president. I think it's very important that we win. And whether the personal attacks are good or bad she certainly attacks me personally," the former president told reporters at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey on Thursday. Trump was responding to questions from his party members urging him not to make personal attacks on Harris, who is the first woman of colour running for the presidency. "As far as the personal attac

Harris aims to blunt Trump's economic attacks by proposing new tax breaks

Vice President Kamala Harris is promoting a broad set of economic proposals that would offer new tax breaks and lower the cost of living for Americans, aiming to address the financial concerns that are at the top of the mind for voters and that Republican Donald Trump is trying to lay at her doorstep. Harris will be in the battleground state of North Carolina on Friday to lay out her plans, including a proposal for a federal ban on price gouging on groceries. She also is proposing $25,000 in down payment help for certain first-time homebuyers and tax incentives for builders of starter homes, among other things. Harris is calling for tax breaks aimed at families, as well as middle- and lower-income people. She would expand the child tax credit to up to $3,600 - and $6,000 for children in their first year of life. Harris would expand the earned income tax credit to cover people in lower-income jobs without children, which the campaign estimates would cut their effective tax rate by ...
