Trump campaign releases letter on his treatment after assassination bid

Donald Trump's campaign released an update on the former president's health Saturday, one week after he survived an attempted assassination at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The memo, from Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, who served as Trump's White House physician, offers new details on the nature of the GOP nominee's injuries and the treatment he received in the immediate aftermath of the attack. According to Jackson, Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the right ear from a high-powered riffle that came less than a quarter of an inch from entering his head, and struck the top of his right ear. The bullet track, he said, produced a 2 cm wide wound that extended down to the cartilaginous surface of the ear. There was initially significant bleeding, followed by marked swelling of the entire upper ear. While the swelling has since resolved and the wound is beginning to granulate and heal properly, he said Trump is still experiencing intermittent bleeding, requiring the dressing that was on

Trump holds first rally after assassination bid with Vance by his side

Donald Trump is holding his first campaign rally since he survived an attempted assassination, returning to the battleground state of Michigan alongside his new running mate. It was exactly one week ago, even to the hour, even to the minute," Trump said, reflecting on the July 13 shooting in Pennsylvania that left him with a bloodied ear, killed one supporter in the crowd and left two others injured. I stand before you only by the grace of almighty God, he said, the white gauze on his ear now replaced by a skin-coloured bandage. I shouldn't be here right now," he went on. Something very special happened." Trump was joined by Ohio Sen. JD Vance at the pair's first event together since they became the GOP's nominees at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. I find it hard to believe that a week ago, an assassin tried to take Donald Trump's life, and now we have got a hell of a crowd in Michigan to welcome him back on the campaign trail, Vance said, speaking before Trump's

Gunman in Trump attack flew drone over rally site ahead of event: Official

The gunman in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump is believed to have flown a drone around the Pennsylvania rally site ahead of time in an apparent attempt to scope out the site before the event, a law enforcement official said Saturday. The drone has been recovered by the FBI, which is leading the investigation into last Saturday's shooting at the rally by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Crooks fired multiple rounds from the roof of a building adjacent to the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Trump was speaking, before being fatally shot by a Secret Service counter sniper. The existence of the device and its use at some point before the shooting could help explain why Crooks knew to fire from the point. The official who described the drone was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. Details of the drone were first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Trump said this week that one bulle

Blinken highlights support for Ukraine in case US backs away under Trump

Ukraine is on its way to being able to "stand on its own feet" militarily, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said, noting that more than 20 other countries have pledged to maintain their own military and financial aid to the country even if the US were to withdraw its support under a different president. Blinken for the first time directly addressed the possibility that former President Donald Trump could win the November election and back away from commitments to Ukraine. The US, under President Joe Biden, has been the most important supporter of Ukraine's more than two-year battle against invading Russian forces. Trump's public comments have varied between criticizing U.S. backing for Ukraine's defense and supporting it, while his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, has been a leader of Republican efforts to block what have been billions in US military and financial assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in 2022. Concerns among Ukraine and its supporters that the country could lo

US elections 2024: Biden is best person to take on Trump, says his campaign

Incumbent President Joe Biden is the best person to take on Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate in the November elections, his campaign said on Friday. The president's in this race. You've heard him say that time and time again, chair of the Biden-Harris Campaign, Jen O'Malley Dillon, told MSNBC in an interview, a day after Trump accepted his nomination to be the Republican presidential candidate for the November general elections. Many Democrats at the highest levels want Trump to bow out of the 2024 election to make way for a new nominee and try to prevent widespread party losses in November. Dillon insisted that Biden is committed to fighting against Trump. I think we saw on display last night exactly why. Because Donald Trump is not going to offer anything new to the American people. He's the same person he was in 2020. He's the same person he was at the debate stage. He's the same person he is about himself and not about the American people. Joe Biden is more

US elections: Trump vows to end illegal immigration; supports expatriation

Former US president and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday vowed illegal immigration and let people come inside the country legally, a move that would help communities like Indian-Americans, a significant majority of whom have entered the US through legal processes like H-1B visas. I will end the illegal immigration crisis by closing our border and finishing the wall, most of which I've already built, Trump told his cheering supporters at the Republican National Convention wherein he accepted to be the party's presidential candidate for the November 5th general elections. I think everybody as a Republican, as a patriot in this room, and most Democrats, we want people to come into our country, but they have to come into our country legally. Legally. Less than four years ago, I handed this administration the strongest border in American history, he said. Under the Trump administration, he said, if you came in illegally, you were apprehended immediately and you were

Mexican prez calls Trump 'a friend', says he'll warn against closing border

Mexico's president called Donald Trump a friend on Friday and said he would write to the former US president to warn him against pledging to close the border or blaming migrants for bringing drugs into the United States. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called Trump, president from 2017 to 2021 and again the Republican nominee for this fall's presidential election, a man of intelligence and vision, despite Trump's repeated calls to close the two countries' border. Mexicans were offended in 2015 when then-candidate Trump claimed that, in many cases, immigrants arriving in the US illegally included criminals, drug dealers, rapists". And Mexico was shocked in 2019 when Trump as president threatened to close the border for a long time unless Mexican authorities stopped migrants from crossing. Lpez Obrador said the two countries' economies were so intertwined that they couldn't bear a closure for even a month. Lopez Obrador said that in a letter he planned to send next week, I am .

What Usha Vance's rise means to other South Asian, Hindu Americans

Usha Chilukuri Vance, entered the spotlight this week as the wife of JD Vance, former President Trump's running mate in the 2024 presidential election. Her rise comes at a time when, across the aisle, there's another prominent figure of South Asian descent: Vice President Kamala Harris, the nation's first woman and person of colour in her role. During its primaries, the Republican Party also saw increased South Asian representation with presidential candidates including Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley and Tulsi Gabbard. Some Indian American political empowerment groups say they're glad there's more representation. Still, they don't think Usha Vance's rise to prominence will sway more liberal South Asian American voters. Others say what needs to be examined is how the GOP responds to hate speech made about her religious identity. On Wednesday, Usha Vance introduced her husband, Ohio's junior senator, at the Republican National Convention by talking about their relationship. "I grew up

Marine accused of Nazi salute during Capitol riot gets almost 5 yrs of jail

A Marine who stormed the US Capitol and apparently flashed a Nazi salute in front of the building was sentenced on Friday to nearly five years in prison. Tyler Bradley Dykes, of South Carolina, was an active-duty Marine when he grabbed a police riot shield from the hands of two police officers and used it to push his way through police lines during the attack by the mob of then-President Donald Trump's supporters on January 6, 2021. Dykes, who pleaded guilty in April to assault charges, previously was convicted of a crime stemming from the 2017 white nationalist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dykes was transferred to federal custody in 2023 after he served a six-month sentence in a state prison. US District Judge Beryl Howell sentenced Dykes, who's 26, to four years and nine months of imprisonment, the Justice Department said. Federal prosecutors had recommended a prison sentence of five years and three months for Dykes. He directly contributed to some of the

US elections: Trump indicates tough policy against China, Russia if he wins

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday signalled a strong policy against China if elected to power after the November general elections. Trump, 78, is seeking his second term. China was mentioned a maximum number of 14 times in his lengthy speech that lasted over an hour and a half. China was followed by Russia, nine times, and Iran was mentioned eight times in his speech concluding the four-day Republican National Convention here. In his speech, the former president indicated that his foreign policy would be tougher than the one was in his first term, (2017-2020). The entire world, I tell you this, we want our hostages back, and they better be back before I assume office or you will be paying a big price. With our victory in November, the years of war, weakness, and chaos will be over, he said. China is likewise circling Taiwan, and Russian warships and nuclear submarines are operating 60 miles off the coast in Cuba, he said. America, he said, is on the cusp of a n
