The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday alleged that admission of students through the management quota in three Bengaluru-based private colleges was being done in an "opaque" manner using money, including funds in cash. The federal probe agency's statement comes after they conducted searches at 17 locations on June 25-26 in a "seat blocking scam" case. The raids were carried out at the premises of BMS College of Engineering, Akash Institute of Engineering and Technology, and New Horizon College of Engineering, along with those associated with these institutions, the agency said in a statement. A few entities engaged in educational consultancy services and some private agents were also raided. President Donald Trump began sketching a roadmap for dismantling the Education Department, with other agencies taking over responsibility for federal student loans and programmes serving students with disabilities. The executive order Trump signed on Thursday to do away with the department did not offer a timeline or instructions, but his administration appears poised to carve away all but the department's most vital operations. The Republican president said during a White House event that student loans will be handled by the Small Business Administration, and it will be serviced much better than it has in the past. He also said programmes involving students with disabilities would be shifted to the Department of Health and Human Services. The decisions drew blowback from advocacy groups that fear disruptions will be inevitable. The Small Business Association announced Friday it will cut its staff by 43 per cent, raising questions about its ability to take on the Education ...
Moving to fulfil a campaign promise, President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday calling for the dismantling of the Education Department, an agency Republicans have talked about closing for decades. The order says Education Secretary Linda McMahon will, to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law, take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities. Eliminating the department altogether would be a cumbersome task, which likely would require an act of Congress. In the weeks since he took office, the Trump administration already has cut the department's staff in half and overhauled much of the department's work. Trump adviser Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has cut dozens of contracts it dismissed as woke and wasteful. It gutted the Institute of Education Sciences, which gathers data on the nation's academic progress. The agency's main role is
Brazilian students returned to class this week with a new task: staying away from their smartphones as a new law restricting their use in schools takes effect. President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva signed a bill in January limiting smartphone access at schools, in line with a trend seen in the U.S. and Europe. It applies to public and private schools, and applies to classrooms and the halls. Phones are still allowed for educational purposes, with the teacher's permission, and when needed for the student's accessibility and health. Schools have the autonomy to set their own guidelines, such as whether students can keep phones in backpacks or store them in lockers or designated baskets. Before the federal law, most of Brazil's 26 states - including Rio de Janeiro, Maranhao and Goias - had already passed measures applying some restrictions to phone use in schools. As of 2023, nearly two-thirds of Brazilian schools had some limitations, with 28 per cent banning them entirely, according to
