Delhi teen's start-up promises 'guaranteed' school admission
With school admissions always being seen as a tough task for parents, a start-up founded by a 16-year-old girl is promising "guaranteed admission" for children in the Delhi-NCR region and has added more than 50 schools to its network. Staria, which started operations in January 2019, said it has already successfully referred more than 100 students for admission in various schools under its network and has set an ambitious target of catering to 1,000 students every month during the next year's admission season. It provides free services to the parents seeking admission for their children, but charges the school for facilitating the admission. UGC to study quality of PhD thesis for doctoral degrees awarded in last 10 yrs
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is planning to conduct a review of the quality of PhD thesis for which doctoral degrees have been awarded in last 10 years by varsities across the country. The move comes following concern raised by various quarters about degrading quality of research in the country and duplication of subjects on which PhDs are done. The commission has invited proposals to conduct the study over a period of six months. "The UGC is planning to conduct a study on 'Quality of PhD thesis in Indian universities'. The scope of the study will involve the PhD thesis awarded in different disciplines by various central universities, state universities, state private universities and deemed-to-be universities in last 10 years," a senior official of the higher education regulator said. Three top Spanish clubs partner with LaLiga Football Schools
LaLiga Football Schools will now see direct involvement from three LaLiga clubs Sevilla FC, Real Betis and Celta de Vigo, it was announced Tuesday. Attacks against Afghan schools soar, says UNICEF
The number of attacks on schools in Afghanistan nearly tripled last year, UNICEF said Tuesday, cutting children's access to education amid worsening security in the war-torn nation. Attacks on Afghan schools increased from 68 in 2017 to 192 in 2018, the first increase in such incidents since 2015. Afghanistan's ongoing war, now in its 18th year, resulted in more than 1,000 schools being closed by the end 2018, UNICEF said, depriving some 500,000 children of their right to learning. "Education is under fire in Afghanistan," UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said in a statement. "The senseless attacks on schools; the killing, injury and abduction of teachers; and the threats against education are destroying the hopes and dreams of an entire generation of children." The United Nations children's agency says attacks on schools in Afghanistan tripled in 2018, compared to the year before. UNICEF's press release on Tuesday says the number of attacks on schools went from 68 in 2017, to 192 in 2018. It was the first time school attacks had increased since 2015. The agency says one of the reasons for the spike was that schools were used as voter registration and polling centers in last year parliamentary elections. UNICEF also says Afghanistan's conflict and deteriorating security situation left more than 1,000 schools closed last year. Half a million children were denied their right to education. An estimated 3.7 million children between 7 and 17 years of age nearly half of all school-aged children are out of school in Afghanistan.
4 arrested in connection with MBA entrance exam paper leak of AMU
The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested four persons in connection with the leak of the MBA entrance examination paper of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).The arrest was made on May 26 and the accused have been identified as Mohammad Irshad, Tariq and Feroz Alam, who is a mastermind and Haider who is a question paper solver. 1,137 Telangana Intermediate students declared passed after re-verification
Telangana Board of Intermediate Education on Monday night announced the results of re-evaluation of answer scripts of over 3.82 lakh students who had failed to obtain the passing marks, including 23 students who had committed suicide last month.

The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TS BIE), which faced flak over alleged bungling in publication of results,Monday said 1137 candidates of the 3.8 lakh students, whose answer scripts were reverified after they failed in the exams in march, were declared passed. The announcement of exam results last month had led to protests by students, parents, students organisations and political parties over alleged goof-up in the process. Several students across Telangana, including the nephew of Telugu Desam Party Rajya Sabha MP C M Ramesh, reportedly committed suicide as they failed to clear the intermediate (class XII) examination. Government officials had said that bubbling errors in OMR sheets (by examiners), among other things, were noticed. The BIE said in a release Monday night that 9,43,005 candidates appeared for the Intermediate exams in March. Of these, 5,60,889 passed while 3,82,116 failed, it said. DU admissions likely to commence on May 30
The Delhi University is likely to begin the admission process from May 30, sources said Monday. This has by far been the most delayed admission session, officials said. In a meeting held on Monday, it was decided that the registration process will commence from May 30 and will go on for a fortnight. The cut-offs will be announced by the varsity almost a week after the registration process ends, sources said. They said the admission portal will show candidates details like how many seats are available in the college and the course they are applying for, how many students have applied for those seats and how fast are the seats being filled up. The Delhi University's admission committee is yet to decide on the agency that will conduct the entrance exams for admission to various courses in the varsity, leading to a delay in the start of the process. Ludhiana: Minor boy 'stamped' on arm for failing to pay school fee
In a shocking incident, a student of Class 7 was stamped on his arm as his parents failed to pay school fees for two months.After the student was sent home with a defaulter stamp on his arm, the parents arrived at the school and lodged a complaint, following which the district education department swung into action.While district administration has constituted a committee, the school principal claimed that the issue has been resolved.Shama Duggal, School Principal, SDN Public School said, "The issue has been resolved. Delhi HC seeks Centre's response on plea seeking RTE extension upto class 12
The Delhi High court on Monday asked the central government to file a status report on a plea seeking an extension of Right to Education Act up to class 12.A bench presided by Chief Justice Rajendra Menon was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by NGO Social Jurist through Advocate Ashok Agarwal seeking amendment in the RTE Act, 2009, so as to enable Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students to study up till class 12.Government of India had earlier filed an affidavit in the matter, submitting that it is under consideration and the new government will take a decision on it.Taking note of the affidavit, the court asked the government to take the case on priority, as it involves the career of EWS students studying in unaided private schools.The matter is slated to be heard on July 22.Right to Education Act mandates all private schools to reserve 25 per cent of seats for children from the reserved category and economically weaker sections and provide them with free education
DU to reopen admission portal for foreign nationals from Jun 16
The Delhi University will be reopening its admission portal for foreign nationals from June 16, the varsity said. The online process for admission to various courses in the university, which commenced on February 22, had ended earlier. "In view of the large number of requests received, the University of Delhi will reopen the online application portal for foreign nationals between June 16 and June 25 for the second phase of admissions for the undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil, PhD, certificate, and diploma programme courses (except MBA programmes)," the varsity said. Admissions in the second phase will be done after admissions in the first phase are over, and depending on the availability of seats, it added. The DU offers more than 500 programmes at various levels. Foreign nationals are not required to take the entrance test for admission to these programmes. Citing the recent Surat fire tragedy, the NCP Monday accused Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde of sitting on a draft bill that seeks to regulate private coaching classes and ensure fire audits, inviting a sharp rebuke from the BJP leader. Alleging a quid pro quo between Tawde and tutors' association, NCP leader Anil Deshmukh appealed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ensure that the bill gets passed in the state legislature. Kerala Governor P Sathasivam has appointed Dr Sabu Thomas, Professor, School of Chemical Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, as the Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University. This was stated in a press release from the Raj Bhavan. The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, made the appointment for a four year period. JNU online entrance exams begin
Over 1.16 lakh aspirants will be appearing for the online entrance exams of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, which commenced on Monday, officials said. This is for the first time that the varsity has switched to computer-based mode of entrance exams that are being conducted by the National Testing Agency across 122 cities in the country. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examinations (JNUEE) and the Combined Entrance Examination for Biotechnology (CEEB) 2019 commenced from Monday and will go on till May 30. The examinations will be conducted in 142 programmes of study in eight shifts over the next four days. Each day will have two shifts -- morning (9:30 am -12:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm - 5:30 pm). "Each centre has been provided with jammers. A total of 1,400 jammers have been deployed. To oversee the examinations in addition to the NTA Control Room, 122 city coordinators have been deployed by the NTA," the agency said. A total of 1,16,558 candidates -- 67,801 males, 48751 .
