Introduce holograms, QR codes in degrees, certificates: UGC tells varsities
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed varsities and higher educational institutions to introduce identification mechanisms like hologram of the institute and QR code in students' certificates and degrees for proper verification and curbing duplication. UGC officials said that the move will also help in bringing uniformity across the higher education system in the country. "You are requested to introduce security features in marksheets and certificates issued by the university to students enrolled in different programmes of study. "While such features are useful for the purposes of verification and curbing duplication, they also help in introducing uniformity across the system of higher education in the country," UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said in a letter to the Vice Chancellors. Better understanding of masculinity could prevent violence: Study
Understanding the positive aspects of masculinity helps to improve boys' attitude towards violence against women they are in a relationship with, researchers suggest.As part of a recent study, a program aimed at reducing violence against women and girls by focusing on positive expressions of masculinity changed the attitudes of middle school boys who may have been prone to harassment and dating violence as they got older.The findings, published in Children and Youth Services Review, suggest the pilot program, "Reducing Sexism and Violence Program - Middle School Program (RSVP-MSP)," improved attitudes related to the use of coercion and violence in relationships. 86.29% students pass class 12 board examinations in Bengal
An estimated 86.29 per cent out of the nearly 8 lakh students passed the Higher Secondary examinations in West Bengal this year, the results of which were declared on Monday. Out of a total of 7,77,266 candidates, who appeared for the examinations this year, 86.29 per cent students passed, the president of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, Mohua Das, told a press meet here. The overall pass percentage last year was 83.75 per cent, she said. A total of 7,818 candidates secured 90 per cent or above marks and 2,63,149 students secured 60 per cent or above marks in the examinations this year, Das said. Das said a total of 137 candidates were among the top ten rankers from all the three streams - science, arts and commerce. This year, every rank has been shared by more than one candidate, she added. Musa killing: Several educational institutions remain closed
Classes at several educational institutions in Kashmir remained suspended on Monday to thwart student protests following the killing of Zakir Musa, the chief of an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in an encounter in Pulwama district last week, officials said. While many schools conducted normal operations till Class 10, all higher secondary schools and degree colleges in Srinagar, Budgam and Kupwara districts remained suspended as a precautionary measure, the officials said. Classes were also suspended in colleges and higher secondary schools of Baramulla town, Sopore and Pattan in Baramulla district, and some in Ganderbal district, they said. The teaching was suspended in degree colleges and four higher secondary schools -- two in Bandipora and one each in Sumbal and Hajin area -- of Bandipora district, they said. Agency to conduct entrance tests for DU admissions not yet finalised
Delhi University's admission committee is yet to decide on the agency that will conduct the entrance exams for admission to various courses in the varsity, leading to a delay in the start of the process. Last year, the varsity's admission process had started from May 15. This time, the standing committee on admissions recommended that the process be started from May 27, but the varsity's admission committee has not yet finalised the date. Rajeev Gupta, dean, Students' Welfare, said the dates for the entrance exams are yet to be finalised. "The portal is the same for merit-based courses and entrance exam based courses. The admission process will start once the dates are finalised. We are yet to finalise the agency that will be conducting the entrance exams," he said. Jharkhand teacher arrested for 2017 FB post about beef
A government college teacher has been arrested here for allegedly writing an "objectionable post" on Facebook two years ago in support of a beef party in Chennai, police said on Sunday. Jeetrai Hansda, a contractual faculty member in the Jamshedpur Co-operative College, was apprehended from a village in Sakchi area of Jamshedpur on Saturday night, an officer said, adding that the teacher had been evading arrest. "Hansda has been booked under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act, and the process to forward him to judicial custody is currently underway," Rajeev Singh, the officer-in-charge of Sakchi police station, told PTI. The teacher, a resident of Parsudih here, had allegedly written a post in support of a beef party organised by the IIT-Madras students, prompting the Akhil Bharatiya Vishwa Parishad (ABVP), the student's wing of the RSS, to file a complaint against him, the officer said. Poll effect: 15,000 govt schools get electricity connections in rural MP
The just-concluded general elections came as a boon for primary schools in Madhya Pradesh's rural areas. As per the state Chief Election Commissioner's (CEO) report, 15,000 government primary schools, which were made polling stations in far-flung areas, got permanent electricity connections during the Lok Sabha polls. Not just electricity, repair works were also undertaken and some schools provided water connections, officials said. Some primary schools in Jhabua, Ratlam, Betul, and Bhind and other areas of rural Madhya Pradesh were made polling centres for the first time, a senior election officer said. These schools either did not have electricity connections or had temporary arrangements for power supply, the official said. Power connections are necessary at polling booths as Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and other equipment need continuous power supply. : A 23-year-old man has been arrested here for allegedly cyber stalking and sexually harassing his former intermediate classmate on social media after she rejected his proposal, police said Sunday. The woman had recently blocked him on WhatsApp for sending 'unscrupulous messages' following which he allegedly created a fake facebook account, posted photos of her with sex soliciting comments as status and collected money from some through wallets, police said. The man and the woman were classmates in intermediate and he was in love with her but she had not responded to his proposal. She had also deleted his messages on a WhatsApp group of their classmates before blocking him finally. This is a case of sexual harassment in electronic form by stalking," a police release said adding the man, employed in a private firm, was arrested Saturday.

394 MPs have at least graduate-level education
As many as 394 newly-elected members of the Lok Sabha have at least graduate-level education, according to a think-tank. In the soon-to-be-constituted 17th Lok Sabha, 27 per cent of the MPs have studied till class 12, while in the 16th Lok Sabha 20 per cent MPs had studied till class 12. Among the newly-elected MPs, 43 per cent are graduates, 25 per cent post graduates, and 4 per cent are doctorates, according to data collated by the PRS Legislative Research. Since 1996, at least 75 per cent of representatives of each Lok Sabha have been graduates, it said. In first back-to-back majority in the general elections for a single party in over three decades, the Narendra Modi-led BJP won 303 seats out of 542 in Lok Sabha polls, handing out a crushing defeat to the Congress and many other political opponents.
