With over 3,500 teachers remaining absent for evaluation across the country, show cause notices to school managements have been issued and fines imposed on schools, Central Board of Secondary Education secretary Anurag Tripathi said Thursday. : Fortythree students of a government school here had to be hospitalised with symptoms of food poisoning after taking noon meal Thursday, police said. However, the condition of all the children is stable. A total of 54 students studying from class I to class III at the Sanarpalayam government elementary school took rice and eggs, and left for their respective classes, the police said. Shortly afterwards, 43 of them began vomitting in the classrooms and were taken to hospital, they said. Consumption of rotten eggs and poor quality rice were the cause of the illness, the police said quoting doctors. Police have registered a case and begun investigations.

The Delhi government made it clear Thursday that "unjustified fee hike" by some private schools was not related to the implementation of the seventh Pay Commission recommendations for the teachers. Talking to reporters here, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said attempts are being made to create a "false impression" by vested interests that the AAP government is against the implementation of the Commission's recommendation, which is "completely baseless". For 26-year-old Neha Sharma, a differently-abled woman who was awarded a gold medal at the IGNOU convocation on Wednesday, reaching this juncture was never easy. A group of students has approached the Bombay High Court against ten per cent reservations in the general category for the economically weaker section (EWS) in medical courses in Maharashtra. After the Centre announced the 10 per cent quota, the Maharashtra government decided to implement it. The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill on providing 10 per cent reservation in jobs and education to the general category poor was passed by Parliament on January 9. In March, the state government came out with a resolution providing 10 per cent reservation in MBBS, MDS (Dental Science), MD and other health science courses. The quota will be provided from the academic year 2019-20, in both private and government-aided colleges. The petitioners contend that the decision is discriminatory as it takes the overall reservation to 76 per cent, leaving very few seats for remaining students in the open category. The varsity will start MA in Hindi and three certificate programmes after receiving approval from the University Grants Commission, Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) vice-chancellor Professor Nageshwar Rao said. The open university has submitted a proposal to the UGC and is awaiting their confirmation. Other universities have also submitted proposals to the UGC.
