Universities need to attract the best faculty and talent from India and abroad to make the country an education and research hub of the world, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said on Wednesday. Kant further said that there is a need to give more autonomy to universities, and also need to create ecosystem for high quality research. While addressing an event organised by industry body FICCI, the Niti Aayog CEO said that the government has taken many reform measures in the last two years. "We have opened up online education sector and we are making efforts to strengthen existing accreditation system," he said. Kant said branding is not about advertising, it is not also about marketing. "Branding is about creating great product. It is not possible to create great brand without creating great product," he noted. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Wednesday pitched for introducing a technology-based solution to ensure fare concessions for students and senior citizens on the Delhi Metro network. At the flagging-off ceremony of the Shiv Vihar-Trilokpuri section of Delhi Metro's Pink Line here, Puri said that he has been assured by officials concerned that such a technology-based solution was "possible". The Housing and Urban Affairs Minister said that the fare of Delhi Metro is "affordable for professionals", but not so for two categories -- students and senior citizens who depend on their pensions. "We will have to introduce a technology-based solution for students and senior citizens...like we give 10-per cent discount to commuters travelling on holidays and using mobility cards... Odisha government has decided to install CCTV cameras in hostels run by the ST and SC Development Department for the safety of the tribal students. This was revealed by ST/SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ramesh Majhi here. "Steps are being taken to install CCTVs at the ST/SC hostels across the state. The State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation has been given the responsibility to invite tender for installation of CCTVs at the hostels," Majhi told reporters here. The minister informed that of the 7,000 hostels run by the department, 1000 hostels would be under the cover of CCTVs in the first phase. He said the government is focusing on the the girls education and CCTV installation will further ensure safety of female inmates in hostels. A school teacher, who is also a church leader, was kidnapped by armed miscreants from his home in South Garo Hills district in the early hours Wednesday, police said. The upper primary school teacher, identified as Sundaybirth Ch Marak (43), was sleeping at his Kakhija village home, when a group of six men came to his house and two persons knocked on his door, SP of South Garo Hills district, Abraham T Sangma, said. When Marak went to open the door, he was immediately taken away by two armed assailants at around 12:30 am, he said. Around 9,000 residents of Assam, reportedly excluded from the complete draft of the NRC, have applied to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) for issuing duplicate admit cards of higher secondary examinations held before 1973 to them, a senior board official said Wednesday. WBBSE president Kalyanmoy Ganguly said the board had issued and despatched admit cards to 6,000 applicants, who actually hailed from Tripura and later migrated to Assam. They had passed the higher secondary examination under the West Bengal board before 1973. "We are in the process of screening the remaining applications on a war footing," Ganguly told PTI. The applicants were residing in Tripura before 1973. Since there was no secondary school education board in the north-eastern state at that time, the schools there were affiliated to the WBBSE, Ganguly said. Three persons, including two girl students, were killed and eight others injured when a school bus collided with a city passenger bus on Wednesday in Atal Nagar, the upcoming capital city of Chhattisgarh near here, police said. The incident took place at Kayabandha square when the bus of Kendriya Vidayalaya, which is located in Rakhi village of Naya Raipur, was on its way to drop the students, a local police official told PTI. After the school got over, its bus was ferrying students to Mana camp area. At the same time, state-run city bus was heading to Raipur capital from Mantralaya, he said. Cornell University said Tuesday it had suspended two exchange programs with the Beijing's Renmin university over allegations it had cracked down on students for defending workers' rights. The decision to suspend the programs, established in 2014, "stemmed from concerns that students at the Chinese institution were being penalized for speaking out about labour rights," Cornell's School of Industrial and Labour Relations said. It was a rare rebuke of a China over its rights record as increasing number of US universities seek to build ties with Chinese counterparts in search of prestige and money. The Madras High Court Tuesday acquitted 21 students of Dr Ambedkar Law College who were sentenced to three years imprisonment in connection with a clash in its campus in 2008. Justice R Suresh Kumar passed the order allowing the appeals against the order of the Additional Sessions Judge convicting all the students and sentencing them to undergo three years simple imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 each. Noting that most of the students were now enrolled as lawyers and their practice suspended in view of the conviction, the judge said he was compounding the offence under IPC section 325 to give a quietus to the litigation to reach a pragmatic solution. He also said the prosecution had not conducted any identification parade and the only crucial witness, according to the trial court, was the college principal who had also categorically stated that he was not able to identify the accused people except one.
