School principal hacked to death in front of his students

A school principal was hacked to death Sunday by a six member gang in front of 20 students, for whom he was holding a special class, police said. Ranganath (60), principal of the Havanur Public School in suburban Agrahara Dasarahalli, was holding classes for 10th standard students when the gang barged into the classroom and hacked him to death, they said. They later fled in the car in which they came to the school, police said. One of the gang members was nabbed later from Mahalaxmi Layout area here, based on a tip off. The man suffered a leg injury when police fired at him after he attacked them. He was later taken to a hospital and treated. Police suspect a land dispute relating to the school building to be the reason behind the killing.

Univ bodies condemn handcuffing of jailed Manipur professor

Three university bodies in Manipur on Sunday condemned the alleged handcuffing of a jailed university professor while being taken to a hospital, a press release said. The Joint Action Committee of the MUSU, MUSA and MUTA at an emergency meeting considered the action as an "insulting treatment of members of the university community," the press release issued by Manipur University Students Union, Manipur University Teachers Association and Manipur University Staffs Association said. They also demanded immediate release of the 15 jailed students and teachers of the varsity. Police confirmed that the professor had been handcuffed and rules were observed in this case. "Irrespective of charges, an accused is handcuffed while being taken to a hospital," a police official said on condition of anonymity. A MUSU office bearer said that Prof. Dorendrajit was handcuffed while being taken to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIIMS) on October 11 and the academician's wife had .

3 held for objecting to appointment of Dalit cook in TN school

Three people were arrested for allegedly objecting to the appointment of a dalit woman as cook in a government school in Salem district, months after another woman faced a similar opposition in nearby Tirupur, police said Sunday. Jothi, appointed cook of Kuppankottai government primary school last week, faced protest from parents of a section of students, who informed the school management that their wards would not consume the meals prepared by her, they said. They also sought a replacement and reportedly threatened to withdraw their wards from the school. Subsequently, the headmaster of the school alerted the block development officer, who convinced them and the cook continued to work there. However, cases were filed against six people, including the headmaster under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and three of them arrested Sunday. 'AMU's Kashmiri students threaten to leave for home'

Kashmiri students studying at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have threatened to leave for their homes on October 17, if the sedition charges against three of them are not dropped. In a letter to AMU vice-chancellor, AMU students union former vice-president Sajjad Rathar said, "If this vilification does not stop, more than 1,200 Kashmiri students will leave for their homes in the Kashmir Valley on October 17 as a last option." Terming the slapping of sedition charges as "vendetta", Rathar said, "The option of holding Namaaz-e-Janaza (prayer meeting) in absentia was dropped after the AMU authorities did not give the permission." No shortage of funds for tribal welfare: Maharashtra Governor

Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao Saturday emphasised on speeding up work on projects meant for the welfare of tribals in the state. He said there was no dearth of funds for the various programmes launched by the state government for tribals. Maha stops distribution of controversial book among students

The Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (MSCERT) Saturday ordered that a book titled "Shree Samarth Ramdas Swami", which allegedly portrays Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in a poor light, will not be distributed among students. The book, written by Dr Subha Sathe, has been prescribed under the supplementary reading scheme of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme aimed at universalisation of elementary education. A circular issued by Vikas Garad, deputy director (coordination) MSCERT, stated that "objection has been raised that there is a derogatory remark about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the book and a committee of history experts has been set up to probe into the objections." The circular further stated that the book should not be made available for reading to students "until further directions" and all the copies of the book will be kept in the custody of the respective schools' principals.
