HC suspends acting V-C, registrar of Manipur University; appoints administrator

The Manipur High Court on Thursday suspended the acting vice-chancellor and registrar of Manipur University and appointed a new administrator in an effort to bring normalcy to the varsity, which has been on the boil since May 30. Former state chief secretary Jarnail Singh has been appointed as the administrator who will discharge the duties of vice-chancellor (VC) as per the provisions of the Manipur University Act 2005. K Yugindro Singh is the acting vice-chancellor and Shyamkesho the acting registrar suspended. A bench comprising justices N Kotishwar Singh and Kh Nobin Singh in its order said the appointment of Yugindro Singh shall remain suspended. Yugindro Singh was appointed as the acting VC by the then VC A P Pandey, who was suspended by President Ram Nath Kovind last month. Denying temple entry does not have religious sanction: Naidu

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Thursday deprecated some communities being not allowed into temples, saying there was no religious sanction for it. Hindu texts held sacred like the Vedas or Upanishads does not prescribe such restrictions, he said and batted for a change in indiviual mindset to reverse such practises and usher in larger societal change. Appoint NIVH's director in 3 wks or send principal secy to explain failure: HC to Centre

The UttarakhandHigh Court Thursday ordered the Centre to appoint a regular director for Dehradun-based National Institute for Visually Handicapped which was in the news recently for alleged sexual harassment of the institute's students by its staffers. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Manoj Tiwari asked the Central government to appoint a regular director for the institute within three weeks or else the principal secretary of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will have to appear before it to explain the failure. Delhi school issue: Oppn parties corner BJP in NDMC panel meet; AAP alleges 'RSS connection'

Opposition parties Thursday sought to corner the BJP-led NDMC over the segregation of students into Hindu and Muslim sections at a municipal school in North Delhi, with the AAP alleging an "RSS connection" to the shocking act that led to suspension of the school's in-charge. British Council to train teachers of NE: Anthony

The British Council Thursday signed an MoU with the North Eastern Council (NEC) for imparting training to 1600 teachers on English, Mathematics and Science over a period of ten months in eight north eastern states, officials said. The 2-phase pilot project, which will begin from November this year, will see academicians of the British Council imparting training to 100 teachers each from each states in the North East, they said. "An MoU was signed at the NEC secretariat here between the British Council and the NEC for imparting training to English, Mathematics and Science teachers in the region to improve quality of teaching," NEC Human Resources Development Director Siile Anthony told PTI. Bedi airs concern over students defaulting on edu loans

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi Thursday expressed concern over several students allegedly not repaying loans borrowed from the Adi Dravidar welfare department for education and other purpose. Addressing celebrations of International Day for Girl Child here, Bedi said thousands of students who had taken loans have not repaid them even after getting jobs. Wipro launches innovation and talent hub in Reading, UK

The multifunctional hub will be a centre of excellence for 'Ascent', Wipro's talent development programme launched in 2017, to train UK-based computer science graduates and degree apprentices in digital technologies. To date, the programme has trained and placed 95 digital technology graduates and 40 digital technology degree apprentices in client projects at Wipro, across the UK. The graduates are from multiple universities in the UK while Sheffield Hallam University is the learning provider for the apprentices who are studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in digital technology.

Free play school for tribal children inaugurated

A free-of-cost English medium play school exclusively poor tribal children was inaugurated on the outskirts of Jamshedpur on Thursday. Set up by a charitable body, the air-conditioned school building was built on 3000 sq ft of land at Baliguma on the Dalma foothills. Besides basic education to children, the school authorities would provide books, uniform and food, Anima Das Memorial Charitable Trust chairman P N Das said. Free transport would also be available to the students of the play school that would start academic activities after Diwali, Das said. It would have a 100-seat capacity, he said adding that over 70 girls and boys in the age group of 3 to 5 years have already been enrolled. "We decided to set up the school after consulting 20 village chiefs and after we were convinced that they would enroll their children in it," Das said. A tribal teacher would be appointed for the school which was inaugurated by former Tata Steel vice-president Om Narayan.

IAF veteran donates Rs 17 lk to school where his wife taught for 21 yrs

A retried Air Force officer has donated Rs 17 lakh to a school where his wife taught for more than two decades, the Defence Ministry said in a statement Wednesday. Wing Commander (retd) JP Baduni lost his wife Vidhu Baduni due to a cardiac arrest in February this year. Vidhu Baduni was a teacher in the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute at Subroto Park in Delhi for a period of 21 Years. "In her memory, her husband Wg Cdr (Retd) JP Baduni donated a sum of Rs 17 lakhto the school she had served," the statement said. Poonam S Rampal, principal of theAir Force Golden Jubilee Institute, said part of the donation, Rs 10 lakh, would be used for awarding scholarships and prizes to students of classes V to XI, achieving meritorious excellence in the field of academics every year. The other part would go towards the infrastructure development of the primary wing of the school. Pinjra Tod stages protest demanding colleges remove curfews for women students

Pinjra Tod, a students' collective, staged a protest Wednesday asking all the colleges of Delhi University to have no curfews for women students. Members of the group marched through all colleges of North Campus to give a strong message to the administration that "we are not going to stop until our demands are met", they said. "We entered Stephens, Hindu, Ramjas, DRC, Miranda and Khalsa. Dr Ambedkar University holds first students' council polls

The first students' council polls of the Dr BR Ambedkar University were held peacefully on Wednesday, officials said. The approximate voter turnout in the three campuses of the university was 40 per cent (Kashmere Gate), 40 per cent (Karampura) and 55 per cent (Lodhi Road), the varsity officials said. Agitating Presidency students urge Registrar to end deadlock

Agitating students of Presidency University on Wednesday urged Registrar Debojyoti Konar to end the impasse over their demand to be shifted to the under-renovation Hindu Hostel. The agitation, marked by an indefinite fast by a section of the students, entered the 10th day on Wednesday. The protesters asked Konar to respond in writing to their charter of demands, which include setting up of a committee comprising boarders for supervising the hostel renovation work, allowing boarders to stay in three rooms in the campus and dissolving the probe panel formed to find out those responsible for closure of the main gate in September. Manipur University students clash with police inside campus

Students of the crisis-hit Manipur University Wednesday clashed with security forces inside the campus during which police used tear gas shells, police sources said. The students were demonstrating in the campus demanding "unconditional release" of all the 15 teachers and students arrested in September following an FIR lodged on a complaint by acting Vice-Chancellor Prof K Yugindro. The clash broke out when the protesting students demanded to meet Yugindro and were prevented by policemen. Both the sides had a heated exchange of words following which the police personnel lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the agitators, sources said, adding several students were detained. The Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) denounced the police action on students. Earlier, MUTA members took mass casual leave Wednesday, university sources said. Some JNUTA members spreading misinformation against civil service rules: JNU

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration on Wednesday accused some JNUTA members of spreading misinformation against the Academic Council's approval of the ordinance related to application of CCS rules on service matters in the varsity. The JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA) had said placing teachers under the Conduct of Central Services Rules (CCS), would mean the "very role that academics are supposed to play in the classroom and in civil society has become criminalised". The teachers' body had alleged that the current administration has decided to impose the rules, which restrict them from expressing dissent. The approval of the ordinance by the Academic Council on October 5 is in conformity with the earlier resolution of the Executive Council of JNU and a UGC letter dated May 1 this year, the university said.
