One person was killed and 14 others were injured when a mob clashed with the police over entry of newly-appointed Urdu teachers in a school in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district Thursday, police said. The students of Dori Bhita High School at Islampur and the locals here stopped the entry of the Muslim teachers saying all vacant teaching posts must be filled, they said. A police team accompanied the three newly-appointed Urdu teachers to the school on Thursday. However, the locals did not relent and pelted stones at the policemen, injuring six of them. To control the situation, the police first baton-charged and then burst tear gas shells to disperse the mob. When the measures failed, the police were forced to open fire, an official said. A person died of bullet injuries and several of the injured were admitted to Islampur hospital, the authorities at the medical facility said. The deceased is a local resident, police said.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has expressed dissatisfaction over the implementation of the Right to Education Act in Gujarat. The CAG report, tabled in the state Assembly Wednesday, stated that the key objective of providing free and compulsory education to children "could not be fully achieved" due to various "deficiencies". These deficiencies, the report said, include failure to provide basic facilities in schools and setting admission targets without taking into consideration the availability of seats as per the RTE quota. "The state government could not provide basic infrastructure facilities in majority of government schools even after seven years of implementation of the RTE Act," the CAG report mentioned. The CAG also expressed dissatisfaction about the state government's monitoring mechanism to ensure the proper implementation of the Act, also known as the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009. A footbridge, constructed by Army to improve connectivity for students in a remote village, was Thursday dedicated to the people in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said. The school located at village Jaba had requested Army authorities for construction of a footbridge over a stream to ameliorate problems faced by children, the spokesman said. He said the Army took up the cause and completed the construction of the footbridge over the stream in a week. The Principal and clerk of a private school in Patna's Phulwari Sharif were arrested for allegedly raping a class 5th student repeatedly in the school premises for over a period of nine months.The matter came to light when the girl came back from school and started vomiting. The grant for school uniforms in government schools of Haryana has been doubled, a decision that would benefit around 14.61 lakh students, an official spokesman said Wednesday. Earlier, a grant of Rs 400 was given to each student for school uniform from classes I to VIII, but now Rs 800 would be given to each student for school uniform from classes I to V and Rs 1,000 to students from classes VI to VIII, a Haryana government spokesman said here. Besides, a Conflict Management and Counselling Cell is being established by the Haryana School Education Department for redressal of disputes pertaining to students, teachers and parents, he said. According to the spokesman, the School Education Department has distributed 2,300 science kits in government secondary and senior secondary schools in the last two years. "Apart from this, 8,000 kits have been sent to middle schools. Similarly, mathematics kits are also being given to primary schools for promoting maths subject," he said.

A female teacher was Wednesday found hanging from the ceiling in her room at the Kasturba Gandhi Residential School in Hariharganj in Palamau district, the police said. The 30-year-old teacher, who was given the charge of warden a month ago, was found hanging from the ceiling by the students, who went to her room after not finding her in the school, the police said. Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Agrahari said no suicide note was found. The district administration asked the police to probe into the incident on priority, he said. In a separate incident in Jharkhands Giridih a youth, identified as Sumit Kandhwe, was found hanging from the ceiling Wednesday morning.
