ABVP, Left members clash hours after JNUSU poll results, FIRs registered

Members of the RSS-affiliated ABVP and the Left-backed AISA clashed early Monday, with both groups accusing each other of attacking their supporters, hours after the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) poll results were announced. Violence erupted on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus after a united front of Left student groups Sunday won all four central panel posts in the union defeating the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) by considerable margins. JNU: Clashes between ABVP, AISA members trigger fear among students

Clashes between members of the RSS-affiliated ABVP and the Left-backed AISA early Monday triggered fear among students in the campus, even as security was tightened to prevent any further untoward incident. A PhD scholar, who did not wished to be identified, expressed apprehensions that clashes could break out again late night and feared for her security. "Even girls were attacked by ABVP activists in hostels, the assailants had come armed with hockey sticks and metallic chains. The whole academic atmosphere of the campus has been vitiated," she alleged. Odia university to be set up at Bakula Bana in Puri district

Odisha government Monday decided to establish the proposed Odia University at 'Bakula Bana' in Puri district. The decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here. Patnaik directed the officials to ensure that not a single tree was felled for construction of the Odia university at Bakula Bana. Puri Collector has been asked to expedite necessary procedures for establishment of Odia University. A single-storey building with sandstones will be constructed for the purpose. An official release issued by the Chief Minister's Office said an officer on special duty (OSD) will soon be appointed and the temporary office of the varsity will function from Pantha Niwas at Satyabadi. Earlier, the state government has proposed a budget of Rs 10 crore to be spent for establishment of the varsity. At least 25-acres of land have also been earmarked for the purpose. Plea in HC to consider all 8th schedule languages to calculate 'best of four' marks for DU admission

The Delhi High Court has sought the Centre and DU's responses on some Kerala-based students' plea to consider all the languages, including Malayalam, given in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution to calculate ''best of four'' marks for admission to colleges in the university. Justice Siddharth Mridul issued notice to the Ministry of Human Resources Development and Delhi University (DU) and sought their stand on the petition which contended that the university's selection criteria was "arbitrary and irrational". Six Kerala-based students, represented by advocates Jose Abraham and M P Srivignesh, said that the calculation of ''best of four'' marks is restricted only to the subjects mentioned in the varsity prospectus -- Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali and Punjabi languages. Pull up school for rape of UKG student, says AIMIM chief

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi Monday demanded that police register a case against the management of a private school where a UKG student was allegedly raped last week by a supervisor in the institution. Owaisi met city Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar and requested him to transfer the case to Central Crime Station (CCS)a wing of the police here, and also sought seizure of all electronic evidence from the school. In a tweet, the AIMIM leader said, "I requested @CPHydCity to transfer the case to CCS and all electronic evidence from this school should be seized,a case should be booked against school..." The accused, Mohammed Jeelani, was arrested Saturday, police said. The management of the school has condemned the incident and assured parents and guardians of 'uncompromising' safety of its students in future. 3 DUSU poll candidates in HC against election results

Three candidates of the Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) moved the Delhi High Court Monday challenging the elections to the student body of the Delhi University on the grounds that voting machines were allegedly tampered with. The petition was mentioned before a bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla which allowed it to be listed for hearing today. The plea sought that electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls be secured to ensure they do not go missing. It also alleged that data from seven EVMs had gone missing. The plea alleged that EVMs were tampered with and questioned how "privately procured" EVMs could have been used in the polls held on September 12.
