CJI asks litigants not to "romance" with litigations

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra Sunday urged the people not to remain obsessed with litigations and make effort to see if they can be solved otherwise. "You are welcome to litigate. But do not romance with litigation," Misra, who is due to retire next month, said. He, however, added that courts welcome people to litigate if they have genuine grievances. "I do not suggest for a moment that you should not fight for a cause. But when the cause is small and can be solved otherwise, then solve it. Because that also serves the purpose of access to justice," Misra said. Misra was speaking after laying the foundation stone of the permanent building of Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA) and inaugurating the legal assistance establishment Nyaya Sanjog in all the 30 districts of the state. Three boys drown in construction pit in Maha's Yavatmal

Three boys Sunday died after they drowned in a construction pit in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district. Police said that the three boys, between 10-12 years of age, had drowned in a pit dug up in connection with the construction of a state-run hostel in Pandharkawada area here. He identified them as Adesh Balaseheb Rathod, Sanchetan Shyamkiran Rathod and Siddhesh Vikas Mogarkar, all students of a local school. A case has been registered and further investigations were underway, the official said.

'Joyful Saturday' prog to be introduced in govt schools of Raj

The Rajasthan government has introduced the 'Joyful Saturday' initiative under which various recreational and learning activities would be held for government school students on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Students will not have to carry their bags for 'Joyful Saturday', which would be held after recess on the second and fourth Saturdays. Activities to improve communication skills, creativity, critical and logical thinking would be held for the students from classes 1 to 12. All colleges will have anti-ragging committees: TN guv

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit Saturday chaired the ninth state-level monitoring committee meet to eradicate ragging in educational institutions and advised further strengthening of the mechanism. Minister for Higher Education K P Anbalagan, chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, DGP T K Rajendran, Higher Education Department's principal secretary Mangat Ram Sharma along with senior committee members participated in the meeting, an official release said here. "It was emphasised in the meeting that all colleges will have an anti-ragging committee and was ensured that the present monitoring mechanism will be further strengthened", it said. 15 students from J&K visit Taj Mahal, Agra Fort on tour organised by Army

A group of 15 students from a Jammu and Kashmir college was mesmerised by the beauty of Taj Majal and Agra Fort during their visit to Agra on Saturday as part of a capacity-building tour organised by the Army. BCKV VC falls ill after students gherao him for 24-hours

The Vice-Chancellor of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) in West Bengal's Nadia district fell ill on Saturday after he was gheraoed by the students for 24-hours in his office, officials said. The agitating students who had gheraoed VC Dharani Dhar Patra since Friday and were not allowing him to leave office allowed him to go home after he fell ill, they said. 25 school children in Assam fall ill after measles vaccination: Officials

At least 25 school students complained of nausea, stomach ache and fever after being administered measles vaccine Saturday in Assam's Hailakandi district, officials said. The students of Sahabad ME Madrasa under Katlicherra revenue circle were administered measles rubella (MR) just after the mid-day meal following which several of them complained of nausea, fever, stomach ache and vomiting, Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan said. The students were taken to the nearby Katlicherra Block Public Health Centre for treatment. However, their condition is stated to be stable and there was no reason to panic, officials said. Joint Director, Health Services, Avijit Basu said that six students have been hospitalised while the rest have been kept under observation and would be discharged soon. Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan has ordered a probe into the incident to be conducted by the joint director of health services and district immunisation officer. West Bengal govt against gherao of principals, VCs: Partha

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on Saturday said the state government is "dead against" the practice of gherao in higher educational institutions. In the last few months, the vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University and the registrar of Presidency University have been gheraoed for days by student unions over admission issues. "We are dead against the practice of gherao of principals, VCs at the slightest pretext," he told reporters, after a meeting with members of the TMC students' wing -- Trinamool Chhatra Parishad here. Chatterjee said former students should refrain from being part of student units of their alma mater. UP govt forms committee to probe irregularities in recruitment exam for teachers

The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a high-level committee to probe into irregularities in the recruitment examination held for 68,500 assistant teachers and suspended a top official of exam regulatory authority, officials said Saturday. In the exam, whose results were declared in August, more than one lakh aspirants had appeared, but only 41,556 could clear it. A government spokesperson said, "In this examination, a list of 23 examinees was obtained, who had not cleared the examination, but were declared as qualified." Bus conductor arrested for misbehaving with college girls

: A conductor with the Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation was arrested and remanded to judicial custody for allegedly misbehaving with college girls on a moving bus, police said. Ayyappan (31) was accused of singing obscene songs and passing lewd remarks on the girl students commuting to college, the police said. The students, unable to bear with the harassment had complained to their college authorities, they said. On Friday evening, Ayyappan allegedly indulged in misdemeanour and the girls got together, caught hold of Ayyappan and handed him over to the police. On learning this, some employees of the transport corporation and trade unionists visited the police station where the conductor was taken to and asked the students to withdraw the complaint. But the students insisted that the conductor be arrested. Following this, a case was registered by the police and Ayyappan was held after enquiry.
