Delhi AIIMS sings MoU with IIT Kharagpur for collaboration in edu, research

The AIIMS here has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, for institutional collaboration in education, research outreach programme and medical services. According to a government official, the primary objective is to promote interaction and collaboration among faculty members, scientists and students of the two premier institutes in their respective domains, to carry out joint academic and research programmes, joint supervision of masters and doctoral students, and collaborative research. The broad areas of cooperation identified under this MoU include initiating joint academic programs such as PhD, MD-PhD, MSc-PhD and other courses. Ohio State: 100 ex-students report sex misconduct by doctor

Ohio State University says more than 100 former students have provided firsthand accounts of sexual misconduct by a now-dead team physician in an ongoing investigation. Independent investigators are reviewing allegations against Richard Strauss involving male athletes from 14 sports and other students. Former athletes say they verbally raised concerns about Strauss as early as 1978, near the start of his two decades at the university. Ohio State has said university officials' response to concerns about Strauss is a key focus of the investigation. University President Michael Drake said Friday more than 200 former students and university employees have been interviewed. Those interviewed include Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, who denies some wrestlers' claims he knew about abuse while coaching at Ohio State. Strauss killed himself in 2005. His relatives have said they were shocked by the allegations.

HC imposes fine on college for fudging attendance; directs to pay Rs 1.5 lakh to rape victim

Taking a stern view of a private college and 58 of its students forging attendance, the Madras High Court today imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on the institution and asked it to pay the amount to parents of the Ayanavaram rape victim. Justice S Vaidyanathan also directed the students to pay an amount of Rs 50,000 "jointly to the parents". The students of GS College of Kangeyam had filed a plea seeking a direction to the university to allow them to redo the exams of the first, third and fourth semesters in the Bachelor of Physical Education. "There is no reason as to why the college is trying to fool everyone and play fraud. So, the college is directed to pay the cost of Rs 1,50,000 to the parents of the recent rape victim of Ayanavaram, Chennai, enabling to use the amount for the treatment and welfare of the victim girl. HC upholds DUSU prez Tuseed's disqualification barely month before tenure ends

Nearly a month before his tenure as president of the Delhi University Students Union came to an end, the Delhi High Court today upheld the disqualification of Rocky Tuseed's candidature by the varsity, saying that he could not have contested the election. Justice V K Rao said Tuseed had assaulted a student in his college for which he was barred from entering the campus despite his apology and had not disclosed this information in his nomination form, leading to a violation of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. The court noted that the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations "clearly stipulates if a candidate had faced disciplinary action, the same would be a non-eligibility for such a student to stand in the election". "The affidavit given by the petitioner (Tuseed) that he was not subject to any disciplinary action by the university authorities was not correct," it said. The observations came while dismissing Tuseed's plea challenging disqualification of his candidature by the varsity .

HC directs restoration of school building in front of BJP MP's house

The Allahabad High Court today took note of the demolition of a government primary school building in front of the bungalow of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in Gonda, and directed the authorities to restore the building and do the needful by August 21. The Lucknow bench of the high court said it was prima facie satisfied that the building was demolished for ulterior motives. The court directed that the building be restored at the same place after it was informed that funds were demanded from State Project Director of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan for reconstruction of the school building. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Rajesh Singh Chauhanpassed the order on a PIL moved by one Rana Pratap Singh. Book row: First 2 chapters of history books of Pb Board ready for 12th standard

The oversight committee, set up by the Punjab government to rectify the flaws in history books, has prepared two chapters of history for Class 12th and one chapter of secondary level, an official statement said. A meeting was held here today under the chairmanship of Punjab Education Minister Om Parkash Soni in which the committee showed him the chapters prepared by them. The chapters would be translated in Punjabi and Hindi in a few days and uploaded on the Education Board's website on August 1. The minister said the preparation of the history book was a big task which required a lot of time but the state government and the Punjab School Education Board had urged the committee to expedite the process so that the students' studies were not affected. CBSE comes up with digitalised exam paper

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the first time has introduced encrypted question paper for class Xth compartment exams.This comes after the board had to face embarrassment following question paper leaks in March this year.CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said, "The CBSE class X compartment exam for Hindi A and Hindi B was conducted in 100% encrypted mode at 211 exam centres all over the country and at 7 exams centres abroad."He further said, "The paper was conducted on time without any other difficulty. Student Police Cadet programme to be launched tomorrow

A special initiative called Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme, which aims to build a bridge between the police and the school students by inculcating values and ethics in them through classes in school and outside, will be launched tomorrow. The Home Ministry sponsored programme focuses on students of class VIII and IX and special care has been taken to ensure that it does not lead to increase in the workload of the students, an official statement said. The programme neither have any prescribed textbook nor any exam envisaged and only one class in a month is proposed, it said. The initiative seeks to cover broadly two kinds of topics: crime prevention and control, and values and ethics. SC stays Madras HC order awarding 196 marks to NEET students opting Tamil language

The Supreme Court today stayed an order of the Madras High Court awarding 196 grace marks to those NEET students who had opted to write the test in Tamil language on account of error in translation. The top court said it appears that after the judgment of the Madurai bench of the high court, the students who had opted for the Tamil language are in an advantageous position over others. A bench of justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao stayed the order and issued notice on a plea of the CBSE challenging the high court direction. The Delhi High Court on Friday set aside Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) decision to penalise Kanhaiya Kumar for breach of discipline.The court called the JNU's order against Kanhaiya "illegal, irrational and irregular," and asked the University to take a decision on the matter after a proper hearing.On July 5, a high-level inquiry committee of JNU had imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kanhaiya for allegedly raising anti-national slogans inside the college premises in February 2016.The slogans were allegedly raised at the event relating to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging.Kanhaiya, a member of the Communist Party of India's student's wing, was then president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union.The five-member panel had also imposed a financial penalty on 13 other JNU students for violation of disciplinary norms.

Number of girls in IITs distressingly low, this needs to increase: President

President Ram Nath Kovind today said girls often outscore boys in board examinations, colleges and universities, but their number is "distressingly low" in the IITs and this has to increase. In 2017, of the 1,60,000 candidates who appeared for the IIT joint entrance examination, only 30,000 were girls. Of the 10,878 students who had been admitted to under graduate classes of the IITs in the same year, only 995 were girls, he said while delivering the 64th convocation address of IIT Kharagpur.
