Karnataka: Government school students forced to study in damaged classrooms

Despite the worn out and damaged conditions of the classrooms in Nimberga Government School here, students haven't stopped attending their regular classes.The students said regardless of the difficulties, they come to school because they love to study."When it rains, water enters our classroom. We love to study so we attend classes regularly. We can't afford to study in better schools," one of the students told ANI.Usha Pawar, one of the teachers in the school, said bad weather conditions during monsoon make it more difficult for the students to attend their classes."When it rains children can't sit in the classroom as water seeps in. Students are keen on attending their classes despite the damaged condition of the school. Teacher suspended for showing movie to students in classroom in UP

A teacher of a government primary school has been suspended for showing a movie to students in the classroom at Lado Majra village in Shamli district, an official said today. A purported video of the incident went viral on social media after which administration took action. District Basic Shiksha Adhikari Gita Verma said in the video, it was seen that the teacher, Arvind Kumar, was showing the children a movie on his mobile phone in the classroom. The teacher has been suspended and an inquiry ordered against him, Verma said.

New TN law aims to protect school children from sexual abuse

Safety and security of students, protecting them from sexual abuse, guarding the rights of children who perform poorly in academics are among the key features of a new Bill passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Aimed at regulating private schools, the bill has been welcomed by parents and educationists alike. Wilful non-compliance of such mandatory features could attract imprisonment of up to a year or a fine that could go up to Rs five lakh or both. The Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Bill, 2018 was adopted by the assembly on July 5. It is aimed at ensuring aspects including assurance of quality education, collection of fair fee and proper conduct of examinations. "No private school shall prevent any pupil on its rolls from appearing for any board examinations on account of poor academic performance," says Section 22 (3) of the Act. EWS admission: Delhi govt increases reimbursement to private schools

All private schools in the national capital will get over Rs 600 more per child from the Delhi Government as monthly reimbursement for admissions under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category from the upcoming academic session. The decision to increase the amount comes after Deputy Education minister Manish Sisodia received complaints from various private schools on "minimal amount" reimbursed by the government to them for allowing students under the EWS category. It has now been decided that the amount will be raised to Rs 2,242 for students from class nursery to 5 and Rs 2,225 for students from class 6 and 8. Currently, the government reimburses Rs 1,598 to private schools in lieu of admission of students who belong to this section, a Directorate of Education (DoE) official said. The schools will also get an annual reimbursement of Rs 1100 for students of up to class 5 for their uniforms and Rs 1400 for students up to class 8 for the purpose. Every school is required to ...

HRD panel drafting New Education Policy gets third extension

The K Kasturirangan Committee tasked with drafting a new education policy has got third extension from the HRD Ministry to give final shape to the draft. The panel headed by the former ISRO chief, which was supposed to submit the report by June 30, now has time till August 31. "The panel had sought another extension to give final shape to the policy and the minister has approved it," a senior HRD Ministry official said. This is the third extension granted to the panel. Initially it was supposed to submit its report by December, 2017. The existing National Education Policy was framed in 1986 and revised in 1992. A new National Education Policy was part of the BJP manifesto. Apart from Kasturirangan, the committee has eight members, including mathematician Manjul Bhargava. Mexican president-elect wants every kid to go to college

Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is promising to send to college every young person who wants to attend. Lopez Obrador told reporters Saturday that all young Mexicans will have the opportunity to study. He said that may require building new high schools and universities. UP govt transfers Lucknow SSP

The Uttar Pradesh government tonight transferred Lucknow SSP Dipak Kumar, a home department spokesman said, three days after violence broke out on the university campus here. Bareilly SSP Kalanidhi Naithni will replace Kumar, a home department spokesman said. Dipak Kumar has been sent to Ghaziabad as commandant of 41 battalion PAC, the spokesman said. The Allahabad High Court had taken suo moto cognisance of the violence on the campus on July 4 and questioned Lucknow SSP about the steps taken to arrest those involved in it after which Lucknow University teachers had demanded the transfer Kumar. Lucknow University teachers had said Kumar was not doing enough to maintain law and order on the campus. The court had pulled up the Uttar PradeshPolice for not responding promptly to the complaint of university authorities about vandalism on the campus. HC warns against medical admissions using fraudulently obtained nativity certificates

The Madras High Court has warned that medical degrees of candidates, who secure admissions in Tamil Nadu on the basis of fraudulently obtained nativity certificates, would automatically stand as invalid. Any allotment granted to such students shall stand automatically cancelled without an order being passed by the authorities and if a candidate goes on to complete the course, the degree would stand invalid, Justice S Vaidyanathan said in his order yesterday. The judge was dismissing a plea moved by a woman from Gujarat, seeking admission to a medical course in Tamil Nadu, after it was stated by the government that she had applied for the same course in her home state also. The judge said students like the petitioner might fraudulently obtain an interim order and complete the course, assuming that the court would not take any action against them later since they had completed the course. Dead lizard found in mid-day meal at Delhi govt school, 2 girls taken ill

Two girls were taken ill after having mid-day meal at a Delhi government school in East of Kailash in which a dead lizard was allegedly found, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to order the termination of the food supplier's contract. Sisodia, who visited the Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, said the students were admitted to a hospital and were stated to be stable. A case has been registered at Kalyan Puri police station after a complaint was received from the school principal, a police official said. Sisodia, also the education minister of Delhi, said it was a "major negligence" and such incidents cannot be tolerated. He said the contract of the food supplier has been cancelled. The contractor was responsible for supplying mid-day meal to 61 government schools in Delhi. Another supplier has been asked to provide mid-day meal to all government schools till a new arrangement is made, he added.

NEET, JEE to be conducted online, twice a year

The engineering and medical entrance exams JEE and NEET would now be conduced online and twice a year by the newly formed National Testing Agency (NTA), HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said today. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET) will be held by newly formed examination conducting agency, NTA, Javdekar told reporters. The NTA would conduct its first exam NET, that was till now conducted by the CBSE, in December, he added. JEE (Mains) would be conducted twice a year, in January and April. NEET (UG) would be conducted in February and May, the minister said. The NTA would also conduct National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) and Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test(GPAT), Javadekar said. CMAT and GPAT would be conducted in January next year. The students can appear both the times in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and JEE (Mains) and the best of the two scores would be taken .

Seraikela-Kharswan district of Jharkhand has been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF), a top official today said. Seraikela-Kharswan was the 10th district of Jharkhand to achieve the feat after all the nine blocks of the districts were declared ODF. At a function organized on Friday in the district Headquarter in Seraikela, Deputy Commissioner Chavi Ranjan declared the industrial district of Seraikela-Kharswan as ODF. Bihar teen rape: Principal, teacher sent to jail for fortnight

A principal of a private school and a teacher, who were arrested for allegedly raping and blackmailing a Class 9 student here, were today produced before a POCSO court which sent them to jail for a fortnight. Four students of the school, who were also allegedly involved in the incident, were sent to the remand home as they are juveniles. The teenager in her complaint to the police had alleged that she was raped and blackmailed by her school principal, two teachers and 16 students for seven months. The six were produced before the court of Additional District and Sessions judge Uday Kumar Upadhyay, who is also in-charge of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court. The court also directed that the case of the four students be heard separately and sent to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB)which would verify their age. At least six people have been arrested and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to further investigate the alleged gang rape of a minor in a private school by students and the faculty, including the Principal, in Bihar's Chhapra district.Additional Director General, Bihar, Sanjeev Kumar Singhal on Saturday said, "Six accused have been arrested and an SIT formed to nab other accused. An investigation is underway".On Friday, the Bihar Police arrested six people including the principal of the school, a teacher and two students over the allegations of the school girl.In her complaint to the police, the girl alleged that the principal, two teachers and 15 students of a school blackmailed and gang-raped her ever since her father went to jail in December 2017.A case has been registered in Chhapra's Parsagarh that falls under Ekma police station, based on the girl's statement.

JNU to hold convocation next month after 46 years

Almost 46 years after it held its first convocation, the Jawaharlal Nehru University will be hosting its second convocation next month for awarding degrees to PhD scholars, the varsity said. In a notification posted on its website, the university said that the second convocation will be held on August 8 at its Convention Centre. "All research scholars, who have completed the requirements for the Ph.D. degree, between January 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 are eligible for the conferment of Ph.D. degree at the convocation," it said. The first convocation of the university was held in 1972, when G Parthasarathi was the vice chancellor.
