HP University disaffiliates Divya College in Sirmaur district

Himachal Pradesh University has disaffiliated Divya College of Professional Studies in Sarahan in Sirmour district and decided to constitute a committee to inquire into alleged irregularities in the college. Divya College of Professional Studies has been disaffiliated from the ensuing academic Session 2018-19, HP University Registrar K K Sharma said here today. The Registrar further said that the students admitted in BA, BBA, BCA courses would be shifted immediately to nearby affiliated colleges as per convenience of the students.

CU chooses slum for community development support

The Calcutta University has chosen a slum in the city for community development support, Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said today. As part of the plan of the institution to undertake community service in its neighbourhood area, a slum has been chosen, the VC told a press meet here. "We have selected a slum which will be getting some support from us - support for the education, health awareness, medical, garments for the dwellers," she said. Banerjee said the university will also arrange excursion activities of the young slum dwellers. To a question about some recent allegations of ragging in the university hostels, the VC said, instances of ragging were matters of concern in recent times. "We have decided to appoint full time superintendents for hostels who will be staying 24 hours at the hostels and we will be paying them a consolidated amount," she said. Varsity teachers call protest movement against draft bill

The associations of university teachers today said they will launch a protest movement against some clauses of the draft bill for colleges and universities prepared by the West Bengal government. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) and the All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA) announced separate agitation programmes against the draft bill for its alleged anti-teacher clauses. A JUTA spokesman said they will hold a two-hour sit-in at the university on April 26. ABUTA leader Goutam Maiity said, some of the clauses of the draft bill were tantamount to snatching of democratic rights. Citing a clause like taking the consent of the authorities before commenting on the work of the state government, he claimed such steps will kill the liberal and academic atmosphere of the institutions. WCD ministry lunches letter writing contest to make schools safe, fun for children

The Women and Child Development ministry has launched a letter writing contest aimed at making schools safe and fun for the children. Entries for the contest '#BackToSchool' can be from any segment: sports, teaching, gender sensitisation, eating habits of children among others, said a statement from the ministry. The last date of sending entries is April 22. A woman lecturer of a private college in Tamil Nadu was today taken into custody in connection with her alleged advise to students "to adjust with some officials" in return for higher marks and money, in what is seen as a suggestion for sexual favour. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, the Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University to which the college is affiliated, set up a 'high powered enquiry' committee to look into 'certain immoral' happenings surrounding the lecturer. Fake mark sheet racket found operating at homoeopathy colleges

Principals of three homoeopathy colleges and a Dean are among 50 people allegedly involved in a fake mark sheet scam, according to a high-level inquiry committee of the Saurashtra University here. Nehal Shukla, who headed the committee, said an FIR would be filed in the matter soon. The SU set up an inquiry panel after it was alleged that several students secured admission directly in the second year of the four-and-a-half-year course in three colleges since 2012 on the basis of fake mark-sheets of the first year. Shukla, a senate member, told reporters that the inquiry panel found that 50 persons, including 43 students, a dean and three principals, were involved. "The panel found that 43 students got admission directly in the second year by submitting fake first-year mark sheets," Shukla said. These students never attended the first year, he said. Delhi govt invites proposals from corporates, NGOs to train school dropouts

The Delhi government has invited proposals from NGOs and corporates to run special training centres for out-of-school children and dropouts to prepare them for age-appropriate mainstream education. The funding for these children (in the age group of 6 to 14 years) will be provided under the Universal Elementary Education Mission (UEEM)'s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. "Interested NGOs and corporates can submit their applications to the Education department by April 28, following which visits will be made to the existing facilities to gauge their proficiency," a senior Directorate of Education (DoE) official said. "All the proposals received will be screened by the screening committee on the basis of credibility, capability and documents. The recommended proposals will be placed before the competent authority and the grant-in aid committee for further approval," the official added.

HC dismisses plea to change date of class 12th economics exam

The Delhi High Court today dismissed a plea seeking rescheduling of the re-examination of the class 12th economics paper, which the CBSE has decided to conduct on April 25 following an alleged leak. The court also asked the CBSE to place before it the records relating to the board's decision not to conduct re-examination of class 10th mathematics examination, which also was allegedly leaked, after a plea seeking a re-test came up. The bench asked the CBSE advocate to find out the reasons for the decision for not reconducting the examination and listed the plea filed by a student for April 20. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar rejected the plea filed by an NGO, Suniye, seeking to either change the date of re-examination of class 12th exam or make it optional on the ground that the decided date was close to some entrance examinations, including National Defence Academy (NDA) and engineering. Classes begin in Pakistan's first school for transgenders

Pakistan's first of its kind school for transgenders opened here today to provide education and vocational skills to people from the community. The Gender Guardian school has been opened by NGO Exploring Future Foundation (EFF) in the Defence Housing Authority area of the city. The NGO said Lahore -- Pakistan's second-most populous city -- has a population of about 30,000 transgender persons. Classes today commenced in the school, which offers a full 12 years of academic education from the primary level to matriculation and then leading up to college, its officials said. The school also has training-based courses in eight fields, including cooking, fashion designing and cosmetics, on offer. "This school has been set up to educate the neglected and oppressed section of the society. Govt seeks review of SC order on faculty reservation: Javadekar

The government has moved the Supreme Court to seek review of its judgement upholding an Allahabad High Court order to prepare a department-wise roster of teachers' vacancies for SC and ST candidates. "We have filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court in this connection on behalf of the UGC and the ministry. I hope it is heard soon so that there is justice," HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters at BJP headquarters here. "We feel that the roster of SC/ST teachers be prepared considering entire institution as an unit, in line with an old mechanism, and not a department. Since there was an order in this connection a circular was issued," he added. Student dies during slap fight game in Pakistan

In a shocking incident, a sixth grade student lost his life while playing innocuous 'face-slapping' at his school in Pakistan's Punjab province, media reports said. During break time, Bilal and Aamir chose to play Thapar Kabaddi (face-slapping) at Government High School Mian Channu when Bilal was severely struck near his neck, the Express Tribune reported. During the game, students and teachers also gathered in the ground to watch the fight, it said. The incident happened earlier this month but its video surfaced yesterday. As the game begun, both of them started to slap each other as hard as they could. The event took an ugly turn, when Bilal unable to bear Aamir's slaps lost his conscious and fell on the ground. Nobody came to his aid and shifted him to the nearby hospital while the rescue team also arrived late after a delay of half an hour, the report said. More males pursue PhDs than females: HRD Ministry data

Over 21,000 more males than females pursue PhDs in the country, contrary to the popular perception, according to HRD Ministry data. According to the data accessed by PTI for the last three years, the student enrolment in the PhD programmes has also increased. While 1,00,792 students enrolled for the PhD programmes in universities across the country in 2014-15, the number of students registering in 2015-16 and 2016-17 was 1,09,552 and 1,23,712 respectively. In the year 2014-15, over 21,000 more males had enrolled in the PhD programmes than females. Similarly in the subsequent years, the number was higher by 21,688 and 21,882. The data also reveals, that maximum PhDs are enrolled in state public universities, followed by institutions of national importance. While 41, 566 students enrolled in the state public universities for 2016-17 academic session, 26,012 of them had enrolled in institutions of national importance.
