Vizag Test: Bumrah's double strike leaves England at 155 for four at tea

Jasprit Bumrah's twin strikes in a searing spell gave India much needed momentum after Zak Crawley attacked the home team spinners to ensure England reached 155 for four at tea on day two of the second Test here on Saturday. Skipper Ben Stokes (5 batting) and Jonny Bairstow (24 batting) were in the middle at the break with England still trailing India by 241 runs. The visitors collected runs 123 runs in27 overs in the afternoon session. Kuldeep Yadav had Ben Duckett (21 off 17) caught at silly point shortly after the lunch break. Crawley however maintained the offensive with a belligerent knock including 11 fours and two sixes. Going with the 'Bazball' template, England were scoring at five an over before Bumrah wrested the initiative with crucial wickets of Joe Root (5 off 10) and in-form Ollie Pope (23 off 55) in an impactful four over spell. Bumrah got the reverse swing going and put Root in his two minds by mixing the in and away swinger, leading to his downfall. Root was ...

IND-ENG 2nd Test: Jaiswal makes memorable double ton; India all out for 396

Yashasvi Jaiswal carried the load of Indian batting on his young shoulders with a remarkable double hundred as the hosts ended with 396 in their first innings on day two of the second Test against England. Resuming at an overnight 336 for six, India added 60 runs to their total before getting all out in 112 overs with little over 30 minutes left for lunch. As was the case on day one, India had to rely on Jaiswal (209 off 290) to get the majority of the runs. In response, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett had taken England to 32 for no loss in six overs at lunch. Duckett targeted pacer Mukesh Kumar, who leaked 22 runs in his two overs. After sweeping Shoaib Bashir for a six and four, Jaiswal became third youngest Indian to make a double hundred after Vinod Kambli and the great Sunil Gavaskar. The celebrations were euphoric for a dedicated cricketer who slept in tents at Azad Maidan in Mumbai in his growing up days, having come to the metropolis from a nondescript village in Uttar ...

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Jaiswal was focused on playing every session

Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a career-best unbeaten 179 on the opening day of the second Test against England here on Friday and the left-hander said his focus was on batting sessions, while dispatching bad balls. The 22-year-old's magnificent knock, his second century in six Tests, took India to 336 for 6 from 93 overs when the stumps were drawn. "I wanted to play it session by session. When they were bowling well, I just wanted to get through that spell. However, I wanted to convert the loose balls, and play till the end," Jaiswal said after the day's play. "Rahul (Dravid) sir and Rohit (Sharma) bhai kept giving me the confidence and told me to convert this into a big innings, and stay till the end," said the youngster who decorated his innings with 17 fours and five sixes off 257 balls. He made 171 on his Test debut against the West Indies last year. Unlike the series opener in Hyderabad where Jaiswal made 80, here he ensured that he converted his strong start int

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: 'Always knew...' - Shoaib Bashir opens up on visa row

The "slight hassle" caused by a visa delay for the India tour is very much a thing of the past for 20-year-old England debutant Shoaib Bashir, who is chuffed about Rohit Sharma being his first Test wicket. Bashir, who is of Pakistan heritage, could not travel with the England squad to Hyderabad from Abu Dhabi for the series opener due to a visa delay. He joined the team in the middle of the Hyderabad Test before witnessing a special win. On Friday, the 6'4 tall off-spinner showed what he was capable of and why skipper Ben Stokes picked him in the squad after watching a video clip of his bowling on social media. Bashir, who played only six first class games before getting his big break, was England's best spinner on the opening day, returned figures of two for 100 in 28 overs. He also bowled the most number of overs on the day. "It's been a very special, special day. For all that I've been through in the last two to three years, it made it even more special. IND vs ENG: Stokes keeps his promise with Root, makes 'a bowler' out of him

Ben Stokes had promised Joe Root to make a bowler out of him and the maverick England skipper is glad that he has succeeded in his mission, evidence of which were the five wickets the top batter picked in a famous win. England's best batter Root was also their best bowler in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test against India and ended with five wickets in the game. He picked up the key wicket of K L Rahul in the second innings, following his four wickets in the first, to play a major part in England's sensational comeback win. Root got the ball to turn at good pace and his straighter one also troubled the Indian batters. With Jack Leach out of second Test, Root will be expected to shoulder more responsibility in an experienced spin department. He bowled a total of 48 overs in the series opener. "I did always say to Joe I thought he under-bowled himself as captain, and when he walked off with four-fer I did say to him, 'see, I told ya I'd make a bowler out of ya'. "Having someo

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: KS Bharat unveils India's plan to counter England

There is no panic in the injury-hit Indian camp, declared wicketkeeper K S Bharat on Thursday, asserting that the home side has made fresh plans to deal with England's attacking approach, including employing the sweep shot as and when required in the second Test here. Bharat, who will be playing in front of his home crowd, said the team has worked on its shortcomings in the series-opener in which England staged a sensational comeback to win the game by 28 runs. Led by Ollie Pope, England batters threw the Indian spinners off their plans with a barrage of sweeps and reverse sweeps. They are set to maintain that intensity in the Test beginning here on Friday. "They really played very well. Credit to them. Ollie Pope really played good shots," Bharat said in the pre-match press conference. India would be without star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and top batter K L Rahul due to injuries. "In our team meetings we spoke about the things we could have done better and yes, we certainly hav

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Here's how Indian batters preparing for Vizag Test

Indian batters are not known for their sweeping skills but they made a conscious effort to practise that shot in their opening net session ahead of the second Test against England beginning here on Friday. Barring skipper Rohit Sharma, not many Indian batters resorted to the sweep shot in the opening Test which the hosts lost to England by 28 runs, only their fourth defeat at home since 2013. Sweeps and reverse sweeps on the other hand have emerged as a strong weapon for England batters against the champion Indian spinners who were at the receiving end in the second innings of Hyderabad Test. Gill, Patidar go big on sweeps ================== All Indian squad members turned up for the opening session that took place in the afternoon. Struggling for runs, Shubman Gill was seen practising both the conventional and reverse sweep. For someone who has all the shots, he was criticised for his defensive play in the series opener. IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Kumble feels Gill has got cushion that Pujara didn't

Former India captain Anil Kumble feels that the embattled Shubman Gill has been given the kind of "cushion" that veteran Cheteshwar Pujara never got and the young batter needs to make it count in the second Test against England or risk being under tremendous pressure. The 24-year-old Gill has not scored a half century in his last 11 Test innings. He scored a 128 in India's first innings against visiting Australian in Ahmedabad in March last year, but after that his highest score has been 36. He made 23 and 0 in the two innings of the first Test against England here, which India lost by 28 runs on Sunday. "He (Gill) has been given the cushion perhaps even a Cheteshwar Pujara didn't get, although he (Pujara) has played over a 100 Tests," Kumble said on 'JioCinema'. "I keep coming back to him (Pujara) mainly because that was his place (No 3) not too long ago. Pujara played in that World Test Championship final and post that, it's been Shubman Gill, who's been moving from the opener's
