Can't preach, my aim is to engage the audience, says Nandita Das

Actor-director Nandita Das today said the aim of mainstream films is to entertain people, but, for her, engaging the audience is more important. The 48-year-old filmmaker, however, said she is not party to the idea of using the medium of cinema to "preach" and bore the masses. "The main aim of the mainstream Bollywood films is entertainment and it is good, but for me it is about engaging the audience and not just entertaining. It is not necessary that I will get entertained with what other people might find entertaining. I like a story that is engaging irrespective of the genre. "People get involved with the story... We laugh, cry as we have taken to it to the make-believe world. Cinema is a part of arts. There is magic in it and it happens sometimes and it doesn't happen sometimes. I would never listen to anything that is preachy and boring," she said on the sidelines of FICCI Frames here. Nandita, who has earlier worked with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in "Firaaq", has teamed up with him ..

We might be reaching a saturation point: Milan Luthria on biopic trend in Bollywood

His directorial venture "The Dirty Picture", loosely based on the life of South actor Silk Smitha, has become one of the most memorable Bollywood films, but Milan Luthria believes the enthusiasm the audience shows towards the biopic genre will soon fizzle out. The filmmaker ,who was a part of panel discussion 'In Someone else's shoes: Fireside chat with makers of stellar biopics' along with Hansal Mehta, Nandita Das and "Dangal" fame writer Piyush Gupta, at FICCI Frames event here, said it is the "laziness" that prompts a lot of directors/writers to work on a biopic. "Earlier, we did not have buyers for biopics, like for 'The Dirty Picture'. Today, the acceptance level is high. But I am afraid we might be reaching a saturation point. "People chase it (a genre) without even knowing why are they doing it. I feel there might be laziness in writing. It is difficult to chart out a road map.... Start out the story with a new character. Reference point always makes things easier for ...

France wants a stop to sexist stereotypes in advertising

Leading French advertisers and the country's broadcast watchdog are launching a nationwide campaign against sexist stereotypes in ads from toy trucks marketed for boys to naked women selling vacuum cleaners. They signed a charter Tuesday pledging to police advertising to abolish "sexist or sexualized stereotypes" of men, women, girls and boys. Broadcasters and advertisers will submit a report on their efforts to fight sexism and will face sanctions for any ads deemed "excessive." Some people attending Paris Fashion Week worried the move could infringe on artistic freedom in France's influential fashion industry. The charter comes amid a string of moves by President Emmanuel Macron's government in favor of women's rights. Signatories called the move part of the larger fight against violence and harassment of women.
