SC stays criminal cases against Priya Varrier

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed all the cases pending against Malayalam actor and internet sensation Priya Prakash Varrier.The apex court further said that no criminal proceedings will take place against her till further hearing.Varrier, on Monday, had filed a plea in the court over the case registered against her film 'Oru Adaar Love' in Telangana.The Raza Academy, on February 16, had penned a letter to Union Information and Broadcasting minister Smriti Irani seeking a ban on Varrier's song from her debut movie.The complainants alleged the film's song 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' offends the religious sentiments of Muslims.The first song of Malayalam movie 'Oru Adaar Love' became viral on the social media within few hours of its release because of Varrier's cute articulations and wink. Since then, the 18-year-old has become the talk of the town.

SC stays criminal proceedings against Priya Varrier, director

The Supreme Court today came to actress Priya Prakash Varrier's rescue by staying criminal proceedings initiated against her in various states on grounds that the video of a song from her film allegedly hurt religious sentiments of the Muslim community. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud also extended similar relief to director of the Malayalam movie "Oru Addar Love". Besides staying existing criminal proceedings, the bench restrained all state governments from registering any further FIR against the actress and the director with regard to the promotional video. It also issued notice to the Telangana government and others on a petition from 18-year-old Varrier, who shot into the limelight after her 'wink video' went viral on internet. Haasan visits Kalam's house before party launch

Setting off on his political journey from a 'simple man's abode,' veteran film star Kamal Haasan today paid a visit to the house of former President, the late APJ Abdul Kalam here, before he launches his party later today. Haasan visited House of Kalam in Rameswaram in this district and was received warmly by the ex-president's family members. However, the actor's visit could not go according to plans as the local administration denied him the permission to visit the APJ Kalam school, where the former president studied, saying the event was political in nature. Actor Katie Holmes has been roped in to feature as the lead in an untitled drama pilot at Fox. The 39-year-old actor will portray the role of FBI Special Agent Hazel Otis, who is in the middle of investigating a terrorism threat at home when an affair with a prominent general destroys her life and threatens her career. How Otis rebuilds her life after being branded as "the mistress" is the focal point of the plot, Variety reported. 2-day cultural festival in Varanasi on cleanliness

Varanasi will host a two day festival Swachhagrah Bapu ko Kaaryaanjali on the February 21 and February 22 to bring focus to cleanliness by using different forms of culture, the ministry of culture said today.
