Funerals held for pop group killed in Indonesian tsunami

Funerals were held Monday for several members of an Indonesian pop band killed when a tsunami slammed into a stage where they were performing an open-air concert. Relatives of Muhammad Awal Purbani -- bassist for the group Seventeen -- sobbed and hugged each other at a service in Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta, including a three-year-old daughter and his wife who was several months pregnant. The group's road manager Oki Wijaya, guitarist Herman Sikumbang and crew member Rukmana Rustam were also buried Monday in separate services in their hometowns. Local media have reported that Wisnu Andi Darmawan, the band's missing drummer, had been found dead Monday. Seventeen's frontman Riefian Fajarsyah -- whose wife is still missing two days after the disaster -- posted a picture of the band online and suggested that Darmawan had been killed. That would leave Fajarsyah as the only surviving member of the group, which has released a half dozen albums and commands a large fan base in ...

Boys should be taught how to respect women right from beginning, says Suujoy Mukerji

Director Suujoy Mukerji believes that boys should be taught how to respect women right from their childhood. Mukerji has debuted into the movie scene with a short film titled "Ab Mujhe Udnaa Hai: Let Me Soar High". It is based on a story by Sunil Kapoor, which is part of his recently released book "The Peacock Feather". Kapoor found the motivation to write the story in the aftermath of the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder. The film revolves around an 18-year-old girl who after being molested goes in a state of shock but eventually musters up the courage to realise her dreams. "Molestation should not be taken lightly. Eighty per cent of women are molested in the world and most of them are coming out and talking about it," Mukerji told PTI. "I want men to understand this from childhood. Boys, when they're growing up, they should be taught how to respect women. If a woman once says 'no', you can't turn around and force it on her," he added. The filmmaker said that the film helped him ...

Nice to have understanding of a female write female's voice: 'Bumblebee' actor Hailee Steinfeld

"Bumblebee" actor Hailee Steinfeld says she is lucky to be in Hollywood at a time when the representation of women, both in front of and behind the camera, is witnessing an upward swing. The actor, whose recent release is the first "Transformers" spin-off, says having Christina Hodson as the screenwriter was an assurance that her character of Charlie Wilson, a headstrong vulnerable teenager who befriends the affable autobot Bumblebee, was in good hands. "I do find that we are seeing a lot more of that. I feel really lucky to be in the age that I am in and feeling that I am a part of the change that's happening. More females are having that light shone on them in terms of filmmaking, writing, producing and acting. "Christina Hodson wrote an amazing script. She wrote of a young female character in a way that I don't think anyone else could have. Kelly Fremon Craig with whom I've worked in 'The Edge of Seventeen' contributed as well. It was nice to just have the understanding of a female

2018: When 'actors' outshone the stars

They came, audiences saw, they conquered -- that's quite how it was for actors such as Vicky Kaushal, Ayushmann Khurrana, Radhika Apte and Taapsee Pannu who delivered quality films in a year where big stars failed as box office draws. The year was especially bright for mid-size films and original online content with audiences rejecting formulaic, starry ventures like Salman Khan's "Race 3" and the much discussed "Thugs of Hindostan" that featured the never seen before combination of Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Instead, straight from the heart films like Badhaai Ho, Raazi and Manmarziyaan that packed in content and acting hit bull's eye with both critics and audiences. Most of the films starred young actors in their 30s. While the Rs 300 crore Thugs of Hindostan, an extravagant period drama, made just about Rs 150 crore, the modest Badhaai Ho, about a middle class, middle aged couple with grown up sons coping with an unexpected pregnancy, raked in Rs 135 crore. Among the other big
