Pune gets Paani Puri Ganpati

As Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated across the nation with great fervour, a shop, 'Ganesh Bhel' in Maharashtra's Pune have a Ganpati idol made of paani puris. Keeping up with eco-friendly theme, this idol is made up of around 10,000 puris and bamboo sticks.The owner of the shop got the idea of making this Ganpati idol after he saw one made up of biscuits."Since our business is of chaat, I came up with this idea. In 2011, we had a Ganpati made of all the 'Bhel' material. We thought of making it with paani puris this time," said Ramesh Gudmewar, owner of Ganesh Bhel.Speaking about the idol, artist Prashant Salunkhe who made it, said, "I made it from 10,000 puris; it took me almost 100 hours of work to build this. To prevent it from turning bad, I have used a hardener on the puris. Halls, plexes must show at least one Bengali film: WB govt

Cinema halls and multiplexes in West Bengal will now have to mandatorily screen one Bengali film for a minimum of 120 days in a year, a state government notification said on Saturday. The notification, issued by order of Governor K N Tripathi, said, "In every cinema hall and in at least one screen of every multiplex situated in the state, 120 prime time show/screenings of Bengali films shall mandatorily be held throughout the year... with at least one show per day for minumum of 120 days in aggregate during the year." "... The Governor is hereby pleased to issue the following directive to all licensees of the State, except the licensees of the GTA areas, with immediate effect..." the notification signed by Principal Secretary, Information and Cultural Affairs Department, said. Neal Purvis, Robert Wade to write script for 25th Bond film

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have been roped in as the new scriptwriters for the 25th film on the fictional British spy James Bond.The two, who have worked with several James Bond movies, were approached for the role after the script, written by Danny Boyle was tossed, reported Variety.Meanwhile, the search for the new director for the movie is still on following the exit of Boyle, who was also supposed to direct the film.Production for the 25th Bond film is scheduled to begin in December. Mexico chooses 'Roma' for Oscars

It is now Mexico, which officially chose family drama 'Roma' to be submitted at the 91st Oscars under the 'Foreign language film' category.The film, which is directed by Alfonso Cuaron is set in the backdrop of Mexico City in the early '70s, reported Variety. It is the story of a middle-class family who is taken care of by a live-in nanny and housekeeper.The autobiographically inspired film that has been shot in black and white is being expected to be a strong contender for the best picture nomination. Hollywood sound designer Frank Serafine passes away

One of Hollywood's famous sound designers, Frank Serafine passed away at the age of 65.On Wednesday, Variety reported that he died on spot in Palmdale, California after being fatally struck by a motorist. He died due to a major head and body trauma.He was known for his sound design in the 'Star Trek' movie and 'TRON' movie series. He even worked for the sound design team in the Oscar-winning 'The Hunt for Red October' back in 1990.In addition to films, Serafine also worked on video game projects like 'Grand Theft Auto'.He is also well known for his collaboration with Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar and Beatles guitarist George Harrison.

Iran orders the closure of a pro-reform newspaper

Iranian media are reporting that the country's General Prosecutor has ordered the closure of a reformist newspaper on charges of insulting the Shiite religion. The Friday reports say that the "Sedayeh Eslahat" newspaper was ordered shut down for publishing an article on female-to-male gender reassignment surgery. The prosecutor, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, ordered the editor be punished, too, the reports said. On Thursday, a headline on the newspaper's front page read: "Ruqayyah became Mahdi after 22 years."
