Non-tariff barrier removal in G20 nations to boost India's alcohol export

Removal of non-tariff barriers in G20 nations such as minimum maturation condition for whisky will help in increasing exports of alcoholic beverages from India, apex body for liquor firms Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) said on Tuesday. CIABC Director-General Vinod Giri said that the G20 countries not only account for 80 per cent of global alcoholic beverages imports, they also allow higher product prices and better operating margins. However, India has a miniscule share of that pie, accounting for just 0.1 per cent of their imports. "It is therefore a massive opportunity not only from the volume point of view but also from the value and profits. G20 nations have great interest in it. While allowing them better access to our markets, we must ensure a return access by demanding the removal of non-tariff barriers such as minimum maturation conditions for whisky that these countries have put up to protect their own industry," Giri said. He added that many

Focus should be on position taken by nations: EAM on leaders skipping G20

With some leaders deciding to skip the G20 Summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said the focus should be on the position taken by countries on key burning issues than on the levels of representations at the conclave. "At the end of the day, countries are represented by whoever they have chosen to represent them. The levels of representation do not become the final determinant of the position of a country," Jaishankar said. He made the remarks at a discussion on Doordarshan. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced in Beijing on Monday that China's President Xi Jinping will not attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi this week and the Chinese delegation will be led by Li Qiang. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi his decision not to attend the summit in-person as he has to focus on the "special military operation" in Ukraine. Putin had skipped the Bali summit of G20 in November last year as well. In his comm

G7, G20 nations should collaborate on climate action: Think tank ADBI

A leading Asian think tank Thursday called for G-7 and G-20 member nations to collaborate on climate action by going beyond energy transitions and building climate-resilient infrastructure. In a blog post, the Asian Development Bank Institute said G7 can lead the global efforts to build climate-resilient infrastructure and systems, while G20 nations can focus on embedding sustainability into their urban development and agricultural practices. The ADBI noted G20 members such as China, India, Indonesia still continue to depend on coal-fired power plants for their electricity generation which "evoke concerns about humanity's future in the face of the climate crisis". "Such conflicting signals from major nations render the future of climate action uncertain," it said. The think tank also suggested that the G7 and G20 countries should collaborate at the financial level. "Although developed countries have pledged to provide 100 billion dollars annually in climate finance to developing .
