Clear, consistent taxes key to making India next global gaming hub: Experts

A clear and consistent approach to personal taxation is necessary for realizing India's vision of making AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics) a high-growth sector, experts said. A high incidence of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) to the tune of 30 per cent on gaming income is creating an incentive for offshore platforms that are not under any regulatory obligations and where no taxes need to be paid, to thrive in India, they said. Such evasion of taxes will be a huge loss to the government and will eventually even kill the domestic industry. An AVGC Promotion Task Force report, constituted by the government has proposed a national AVGC-Extended Reality Mission with a budget outlay to be created for integrated promotion and growth of the sector. As per estimates, the Online Skill-Based Gaming (OSG), is about USD 2.5 billion industry with a CAGR of over 38 per cent and is projected to grow to USD 20 billion by 2030 in terms of revenue. AVGC task force suggests national mission to promote sunrise sector

In a bid to make audio visual, gaming and comic (AVGC) education as sought after as medical and engineering, a government-appointed task force has suggested starting globally recognised undergraduate and postgraduate courses and tapping talent at the school level leveraging the National Education Policy. The AVGC Task Force, chaired by Apurva Chandra, secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has also recommended to the government to launch a National AVGC-XR Mission with a budget outlay for integrated promotion of the sector and a 'Create in India' campaign on the lines of Make in India' with an exclusive focus on content creation. XR refers to Extended Reality, an umbrella term used to describe immersive technologies that can merge the physical and virtual worlds. Majority of people think online gaming involves betting, gambling: Survey

A majority of people view fantasy sports as online gaming that involves wagering, betting and gambling, a survey by online platform LocalCircles said on Monday. The survey on online gaming conducted by LocalCircles found that 91 per cent of the respondents want a ban on pesky SMSes that promote online and fantasy games. "While the Supreme Court has upheld its position and the position of the Punjab High Court in 2017 and ruled that fantasy sports are a game of skill, the public view continues to differ," the report said. In response to a question on "should online fantasy sports be considered as online gaming that involves wagering, betting and gambling", nearly 2 out of 3 respondents chose "yes", 14 per cent stated 'no' and the remaining 21 per cent gave no clear response. "In effect, for 65 per cent, out of 9,507 respondents, online fantasy sports is akin to gambling, wagering or a game of chance with risks in contrast to the position of the Supreme Court," the report ...

Computer gaming might create life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias in vulnerable youngsters whose tendency may have previously gone unreported, according to a new study.The researchers observed an uncommon yet distinct pattern in children who lose consciousness while playing video games.The findings of the study were published in the journal of the Heart Rhythm Society, the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the Pediatric & Congenital Electrophysiology Society."Video games may represent a serious risk to some children with arrhythmic conditions; they might be lethal in patients with predisposing, but often previously unrecognized arrhythmic conditions," explained lead investigator Claire M.
